For example, there is times, when the lessons are made based on the students interest, but the students doesn't seem to do the work. It’s because it’s a bad day, they have little to no motivation, they just don’t want to do it or they are going through hard time or family issues. When this time come, the only option is getting the works done by rewarding them. Otherwise, they really don’t care. He points out that this kind of motivation is all about stimulating people’s behavior, that can be made by rewarding it financially or punishing them for not achieving their goal. “Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)
When a person plans or wants to do something, he or she has a motivation for that specific thing. In other words, when a person does something, that person has a reason why he or she should do that thing. Not always there is a reason to do something, but sometimes may be many reasons that are backing a person to take those actions to do it. This happens not only to humans, or living organisms, but also in nonliving organisms. An example is when a rock which had bounced after it hit the floor while falling down. Scientists may tell some of the reasons why the rock does that kind of action, but they cannot tell all of the reasons that back the rock’s actions. A similar thing, as the scientists, was Alfie Kohn trying to do in his essay, “Why Self-Discipline is Overrated”. He was telling some of the motivation that people have that back part of their actions. Two of those motivations which Kohn talks about are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and how they are sometimes combined together.
The goal of this study was to analyze the effects of both positive and negative feedback on male and female students’ intrinsic motivation. Research was conduced with a random sample consisting of 30 male and 30 female undergraduate students. All students were studying physical education in the Montreal, Canada area. Students involved in the study reported to a laboratory. They were asked to balance on a stabilometer 20 times for 20 seconds each. Some students received positive comments from the instructor and some students received negative comments. The subjects then complete a questionnaire at the end of the trials. The students were questioned with The Mayo (1976) Task Reaction Questionnaire (TRQ). This research study found that male and female students who received positive feedback reported higher levels of intrinsic motivation.

It is first important to understand how motivation works in the classroom. There are infinite procedures teachers use to achieve desired effects from their students, but there are general patterns these motivational tools follow. In order for teachers to communicate with their students, they must identify with their needs on an individual basis (Gawel, 1997). This proposal is much akin to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which states five basic needs that must be met in order to achieve full motivation.
