The healthcare industry is made up many different branches of professionals that specialize in certain types of medicine. Many times, patients have a need to see multiple health care professionals at once. In order to provide optimal care, it is very important that all of the health care providers seeing the same patient, communicate and work together. When the providers come together and work as a team, it is known as interprofessional care. In interprofessional care, the providers not only work amongst themselves, but they also work together with the patients, their families, and the communities. This is extremely beneficial for students so that they can grasp the knowledge of interprofessionalism and learn about the importance of incorporating this into their own clinical experiences. An example of an activity that students can do during class may be a case study. Working in groups, they can discuss the case study and distinguish ways that the collaboration of work was beneficial to the patient’s needs. Also, they can discuss ways that the use of interprofessional care was lacking, and provide examples on changes that could have been made in order to provide better quality care for the patient. After research in different areas of practice such as occupational or speech therapy, the students can look at the case in the eyes of a professional in a different scope of practice. This may allow them see how the patient could benefit from other forms of therapy. Clinical experience is also a great way for students to gain interprofessional care experience. An occupational therapist is one who helps people of all ages be able to perform all of the daily activities that they need and want to do. Some examples of cases that an occupational therapist would typically take on are helping elderly people adapt to the cognitive changes that their bodies experience, helping both children and adults with disabilities be able to participate in daily activities such as work and school, or helping patients who have suffered from an injury regain their skills as best as possible. Effectively coordinated and collaborative inter-professional teams are essential to the care and treatment of patients (Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Doyle, 2008; Ruhstaller, Roe, Thürlimann & Nicoll, 2006; Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300). Communication is a process of conferring information between individuals through use of speech, writing or various other means, and is critical to the success of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) (Higgs, McAllister & Sefton, 2012, p. 5; Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Sargeant, Loney & Murphy, 2008). An MDT must use multiple strategies to enhance communication and ensure their success (Doyle, 2008). An effective MDT generates opportunities that benefit healthcare, which is the reason for the recent dominance of inter-professional care in health practice (Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300; Rowlands & Callen, 2013). Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.
Townsend & Polatajko (2007) state that “Occupational therapy is the art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living, through occupation; of enabling people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being; and of enabling a just and inclusive society so that all people may participate to their potential in the daily occupations of life”.
Good teamwork is important in a patient centred care. It is a team of health professionals who actively participate, cooperate, interact, communicate expertise, respect, trust and its main focus is to improve patient’s health (Miller, 2008, p.14). Also, the team includes the family of the client and the patient itself (Miller, 2008, p. 15). Therefore, all members have a role to play. For instance, in the nursing practice it involves health promotion and maintenance regarding patient’s health in order to decrease the impacts of negative outcomes (NMBA, 2010). Nevertheless, this can be maintained under the national competency standard (NMBA, 2010). Part of the national competency standard promotes professional responsibility, multidisciplinary approach, critical thinking and client care delivery (NMBA, 2010).
Occupational therapy was based off of psychology; we evolved from treating mentally ill patients with isolation as an efficient treatment plan. We must never forget we are known to be “the art and science of helping people do the day-to-day activities that are important and meaningful to their health and well being through engagement in valued occupations” (Crepeau, Cohn, & Schell, 2008). To other professional disciplines this article explains the difference between each of us, yet can also express our relation to one another. The basic goal of all therapeutic disciplines is to better our clients life, through physical, speech or occupational therapy. Every discipline targets different goals, may it be body mechanics, reducing a stutter or buttoning a shirt, at the end of the day our clients well being may it be through science, art or both is all that matters. The principle focus of this essay is to discuss the importance of inter-professional collaboration in delivering effective health care and what challenges and constraints exist. The United States medical system adopted occupational therapy in the 19th century. In 1910, occupational therapy became a realized profession. Then, the main focus was working with individuals to get them to a fully functional state. Around 1930, standards of practice were developed for occupational therapists (OT’s). The career continues to evolve and change as new illnesses and disabilities arise. Even with all the changes, the main focus remains intact: helping people.

The World Health Organization (2010) defines interprofessional collaboration in health care as occurring “when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings” (p. 7) and IPE as occurring “when two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes” (p. 7). I wish to enroll in the Occupational Therapy Program at Loma Linda University in order to pursue my interests in rehabilitation for individuals of all ages with varying health concerns. As a rehabilitation psychology and psychology double major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, my undergraduate curriculum has provided me with a strong background in research and critical thinking skills. After deciding to pursue a career in occupational therapy, I enrolled in the “Orientation to Occupational Therapy” course which answered many of my questions and curiosities surrounding occupational therapy as a profession. I found myself excited for class every week and applied the information that I learned while volunteering with occupational therapists at Children’s Therapy Network and Capitol Lakes. The theories and practices in this subject along with the relevance to my interests in a clinical setting impressed me.

They also work as a team with other health care professionals to help with their patients needs. Physical therapist can really make a difference in their patient’s lives by not only providing therapeutic services but also encouraging and motivating them so they can get better. The main goals of physical therapist are to help their patients retain or gain back lost physical mobility, eliminate or reduce pain, increase productivity and help promote a healthy life style so patients can have a better quality of life and become more independent.
