Jhumpa Lahiri has the ability to interconnect the lives and perceptions you see within her characters whether they’re from India or America. Take with her story “Interpreter of Maladies” she was able to show multifaceted characters in the form of Mr. Kapasi and Mrs. Das and their alike strains in their lives. What is so unique about her storytelling is her usage of a third person narration, through the eyes of Mr. Kapasi. Within Lahiri’s story, we are presented with a family the Das having an exploration vacation in India while being driven around by their interpreter tour guide driver Mr. Kapasi. She’s able to demonstrate the theme about romanticizing and lack of communication throughout the story showing her character nature faults.
Initially, the quality that can be seen is the broken-down communication between Mr. & Mrs. Das. While sitting in the cab, there is no real interaction towards each other or even acknowledging their own children at times. His hunger for attention starts to overwhelm his mind and he drifts into a constantly imagining the conversations the could have, to the letter that will be exchanged. The reason that his character romancing of Mrs. Das plays off ever so well is that Lahiri knows that people in society no matter how surrounded they are could still be isolated and that hunger for connection is what makes people feel important. The main character is Mrs. Das whom is flirtatious, careless, and needy. She and her husband take their family to see the country India for the first time. The tour guide Mr.Kapsi whom is curious, understanding, and quite aware. He sees something unusual at the beginning of the trip, but does not say anything. As the children continue their site seeing, the husband takes picture with his camera as if he lost in his own world. Meanwhile the wife gets to know the driver instead of site seeing. Mr.Kapsi is aware that the family is not like most Indians which lead him to be attracted to Mrs.Das. It states, “The family looked Indian but dressed as foreigners did, the children in stiff, brightly colored clothing and caps with translucent visors (29). This quote shows the difference in cultural clash as well the difficulty of communication. Mr.Kapsi tells Mrs. Das that he is an interpreter for a doctor which makes her believe she can discuss her personal business without him telling anyone. It states, “He decided to begin with the most obvious question, to get to the heart of the matter, and so he asked, “Is it really pain you feel, Mrs. Das, or is it guilt?”(39) Made the wife realized what she was truly feeling about her mistakes. Mrs. Sen was forced to face the reality that she was no longer in India and her life was completely different from how it used to be whenever she was on the driver seat. It was something she did not need to do in India, she used to have a chauffeur to fetch her around in India. So, Mrs. Sen tried her best to avoid driving by coming up with lots of excuses. When Mr. Sen asked her the reason why she refused to drive, she used Eliot as an excuse to not to drive. Even when she was practicing driving with Eliot, Mrs. Sen shared with Eliot that Mr. Sen told her everything will improved once she gets her license. She, then, proceeded to fantasize about driving all the way back to Calcutta. In Mrs. Sen’s world, better means putting everything back in place, going back to where she truly belongs, India. On top of that, when Mr. Sen forced Mrs. Sen to drive, she chose to turn on the radio as an distraction to delude herself from facing the overwhelming reality. Das shows a stereotypical American flaw where she did not care about her children and went and openly started discussing her personal life and also in the process she found guilty for disrespecting the country and the cultural believes, where she believes it or not she still got the Indian heritage in her. Lahiri’s proves us that Mrs. Das is a messy; lazy and over all a bad parent. She simply has no concern for the environment, as she was completely fine after dropping rice snacks all over the floor riling the local wildlife. Mrs. Das simply represents what’s called “Ugly American” who always stands out in the crowd for her own needs and is very narrow minded and only cares about her self. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her first novel and her fiction appears in The New Yorker often. One of those works from 1998 is a short story, “A Temporary Matter”, about a husband and a wife, Shukumar and Shoba, whose electricity will be temporarily cut off for one hour for five days. This seems simple enough, but as you read the story you find that maybe it’s their marriage that might be the “temporary matter” itself.

In this story, we focus on an East Asian man of Bengali descent who wants to have a better future for himself so he leaves India and travels to London, England to pursue a higher education. His pursuit for higher education takes place on three different continents. In India, he feels safe in his home country and welcomed, but when he travels abroad he starts to have fear and anxiety. Through his narrations, we learn how he adapts to the European and American and through these experiences he learns to assimilate and to adapt to the new culture he travels to.
In “My Two Lives” Jhumpa Lahiri talks about her hardship growing up in America coming from two different cultures. At home she spoke Bengali with her parents, ate with her hands. According to Jhumpa’s parents she was not American and would never be. This led her to become ashamed of her background. She felt like she did not have to hide her culture anymore. When Jhumpa got married in Calcutta she invited her American friends that never visited India. Jhumpa thought her friends would judge from being part of the Indian culture and isolate her.However her friends were intrigued by her culture and fascinated. She felt like her culture should not be hidden from her friends anymore, and that coming from an Indian-American culture is unique. Jhumpa believes that her upbringing is the reason why she is still involved with her Bengali culture. Jhumpa says“While I am American by virtue of the fact that I was raised in this country, I am Indian thanks to the efforts of two individuals.” Jhumpa means that she is Indian, because she lived most of her life and was raised here. In the story Lahiri explains that her parents shaped her into the person she is. Growing up coming from two different cultures can be difficult, but it can also be beneficial.
