When I was on a softball team a few years ago, me and my teammates would communicate through the essentials of communication which are process, meaning, and symbolic communication both on and off the baseball field. In example, when we are on the field we communicate in procedural ways in order to reach a goal. We were engaging in action when we were practicing and using our knowledge when implementing a strategic plan on how we would play the different opponents we faced especially in crucial games. We were all different races so we all had different cultural backgrounds. There were people on my team who were of American, African American, Asian, Lebanese, Puerto Rican, and Dominican decent. However, interpersonal communication competence was also a critical aspect of our games because our motivation and our approach on social situations not only has an effect on our performance, but it can generally have an impact on the team. To better clarify this term, “Your ability to communicate effectively is your interpersonal competence” (Devito, 10). For instance, there was a moment when we were tied with the opposing team in an important game. It was the last inning and I was the next batter at the plate. As I looked over to my right my hitting coach made a symbolic hand gesture towards me, which led me to make an adjustment with my hitting stance. I was able to get a double out of it, which means I was in scoring position after reaching second base. I then looked over to my teammates and cheerfully screamed towards them while clapping my hands together, “Let’s Go!!” This reaction was an attempt to motivate my teammates and enhance their energy levels. In the end the next batter up at the plate hit a line drive into the outfield and I was able to score a run. The game ended with my team winning and advancing in the …show more content…
After examining these two important events of communication that took place, there are the positive and negative outcomes of how we interpret communication and how we actively listen to each other in social situations. This resulted in the receiver(myself), to decode the message as being negative based on her unnecessary and unethical behavior. In addition, “Decoding refers to the act of understanding messages” (Devito, 12). There are certain noises that can have an impact on the receiver which are caused by the sender. For example, “psychological noise is the mental interference in speaker or listener and includes preconceived ideas, wandering thoughts, biases, and prejudices, closed-mindedness, and extreme emotionalism” (Devito, 14). Instead of listening to my teammate when she was trying to give me advice I was so focused on the anger I had after the comment that was made towards me, that I didn’t allow myself to control my actions. Peterson (200) warns us that there are communicative traps that we need to be aware of. Peterson could have elaborated more fully on how and what to do when this occurs. While I am aware that the book has caused me to be more of a listener, however, the reverse effect is a loss in being a speaker. Peterson contends that healthy filters can be used to create healthy relationships that are empathetic and sympathetic in nature. It seems that Peterson wants to move communication into this phenomenon that is universally sound and politically correct. However, it seems that if we take on this task we are forcing ourselves against nature.
Miscommunication is a struggle that lives within the world everyday. Being able to understand what another person is trying to convey is an essential part of the way humans interact with one another. When a message is not translated correctly from person to person conflict arises and heated battles rage within a relationship; whether it is a mother and daughter, or two quarreling lovers, or strangers upon the street. All humans are created differently, with diverse upbringings, perspectives, and mindsets. Particular forms of communications may mean different things to various people. When talking about the concept of miscommunications, one must also address the concept of communication itself.
Poor communication strategies can cause tentative conversations and further any conflict that has already risen. The game had been a strenuous battle from the very second that the whistle blew. In every play each one of us had put forth all of the effort and energy that we contained. Now, with only seconds left remaining in the forth quarter we trailed 14 to 17. Yet, hope still remained.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.

First baseball involves loughts of team work. Communication is one major part of team work. Also hand signals, and paying attention to your coach. In fact you have to work with people you don’t like or you’ll never have good communication with your teammates.Also if you don’t get along it will be hard to accomplish anything at all. Being able to communicate with coaches, health professionals and other people in your team is crucial to becoming a top athlete. For me, it is most important that I communicate openly with my with my coaches and other team members of my running group to ensure that. Being a younger athlete it is vital for me to communicate clearly with my coach in regards how I am adapting to my training load; as studies have shown that poor communication was the leading factor which contributed to burnout in young athletes (Athlete Assessment, 2015).

Although the general language used to communicate is fairly standardized for a given community there are definite variations within certain groups, including, regional, ethnic, gender, occupational, socioeconomic, and age groups. As in football, the quarterback will get a play brought in from the sideline, then he’ll relay it to the other players within a span of 25 seconds, while also trying to line up and get the snap off. If there is any flaw in the communication and the play gets relayed wrongly, then the whole play could crumble within the team by each players having a different understanding of what play they’re running. The better a team is at communicating, it correlates into higher team success as they naturally flow better and operate at a much more efficient rate. Communication is an important tool in portraying oneself to others and having strong communication skills allows an individual to seem more competent (Kepcher 2010). The observed communication event is between a mother and a son who are having a conversation over a meal at the dinner table. The mother is telling her son about the bad day she had, whilst taking her anger out on her son who seemed disinterested and annoyed at the conversation. The communication theories that are the most evident in this scenario are the use of paralanguage, kinesics and listening and feedback.
One way to be a competent communicator is to be aware of things that can affect the way you communicate. For example, your environment. Personal experiences and your personal cultural background can affect the way you think about others, which can resultantly affect the way you communicate. While you might think something you do is right and ethical, while another person might find it wrong and unethical, or vice versa. This can make communication more of a challenge or impossible. One way to eliminate this problem is to try to be more understanding to someone’s background, to put yourself into their shoes and to understand that everyone has different backgrounds and different ways of perceiving what is right and wrong. It is important to remember that people from different backgrounds often can share enough common ground to make an effective relationship which can lead to effective communication.

Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
