The FCC (Federal Communication Commission) defines open internet as “… the internet as we know it. It's open because it uses free, publicly available standards that anyone can access and build to, and it treats all traffic that flows across the network in roughly the same way. The principle of the Open Internet is sometimes referred to as ‘net neutrality’.” In this sense, the FCC acknowledges that the internet is supposed to be free and public, and no private company has the power to monopolize it. However, in the past months the FCC also was trying to pass a proposal that would end net neutrality and allow internet providers to control the internet data flow and divide it into slower and faster lanes. The internet brought new ways to communicate, innovate and interact, and that have been done in a free and open platform. Any startup with the new big idea can freely promote their technology to the world and consequently grow online, with no restrictions; and that is how everything should be. Certainly, the main problem with the biggest computer network in the world is security, especially now that there is a growth in cloud computing. Hence, companies should focus on maintaining the internet secure and fast. People want to share and learn, and would be frustrating if every time that you want to access any content, you are slowed down because the website that you are accessing does not pays a faster lane for their content. Slow content delivery not only will make people uninterested in internet services such as online magazines, blogs and streaming websites, but also will mean an obligatory change in culture, people will have to adapt to a new life without a normal passed internet, resulting in drastic changes in social habits. Nevertheless, institutions like the FCC and cable companies should support the development of a better internet, turning it into a safer place. Internet providers should provide faster internet to content creators because it would promote innovation and creativity, developers would have the best of the best’s platforms to develop their apps and websites; thus users would have access to the best content at a fast pace. For example, Google has created Google Fiber, a very fast internet service that would put current data services into shame; “Google Fiber starts with a connection that is up to 100 times faster than today's average broadband speeds. Instant downloads. Crystal clear high definition TV. And endless possibilities.” Internet providers should be inspired by initiatives like Google Fiber and work on faster connections
