This discussion board post will focus on communication with people of other cultures that is both effective and appropriate. I will explain my level of intercultural competence with my reasoning for my level of competence. Then I will describe how often I communicate with people of other cultures.
Meeting goals set when interacting with someone of a different culture is intercultural communication effectiveness (Jandt, 2016). I am a nurse that works in a hospital. It is not uncommon to encounter people of different cultures than my own on a daily basis. Having worked with people from different cultures for the past 17 years, I believe that I am competent in interacting with people of other cultures. Contrastingly, they believe illness and dying as a test of God. When it comes to making healthcare decisions, the whole family is involved, including extended family members, such as, parents and grandparents (Hussein-Rassool, 2015). This is different than my culture in that I make my own healthcare decisions. I may consult my husband, and we may come up with a decision together, but I ultimately make the final decision. Some things I do when interacting with people of the Muslim faith is to make sure and talk to all the family members in the room. When I ask questions, I allow ample time for the family to discuss amongst themselves, before expecting an answer. I also understand that often times female patients require a female physician. I always make those arrangements for patients when there are male physicians that are rounding. And, I allow prayer time to be done on their prayer schedule time. Issues of culture are often controversial. LaBorde (2010) has noted that culture is always a factor in conflict. Ironically, conflict can provide nurses with an excellent opportunity for developing compassion that will lead nurses unto a place of meeting in which there is a deep respect for differences and equally intentional openness to the possibility of connection. Healthcare practitioners are confronted in a daily basis with the practical manifestation of these issues. In particular, nurses are more confronted by cultural issues than the other healthcare providers because nurses spend majority of their time with patients. However, some nurses are reluctant to confront and discuss the cultural issues because of lack of knowledge in dealing with patients of diverse cultures (Tjale & Villiers, 2004).

Providing culturally competent care is a vital responsibility of a nurse’s role in healthcare. “Culturally competent care means conveying acceptance of the patient’s health beliefs while sharing information, encouraging self-efficiency, and strengthening the patients coping resources” (Giddens, 2013). Competence is achieved through and ongoing process of understanding another culture and learning to accept and respect the differences.

Certain medical decisions can be difficult to finalize since religion must be taken into consideration. Healthcare providers will come into contact with people of different faiths, nationalities and cultures. All patients should be treated with the same amount of respect and acceptance in order for their medical needs to be fairly met.
As a nurse strive to provide culturally sensitive care, they must recognize how their client's and their perceptions are similiar as well as different. I wasn 't quite sure what I was getting into when I first enrolled in Intercultural Communications. I had assumptions as to the goals of the course such as I would be learning about the way cultures interact with each other, learn about communication in general, or I would be learning about the ways we use communication through our culture. I think that I achieve the latter goal, but I also gained knowledge about more then just my culture. Barna, there are five stumbling blocks mentioned that are seen in a cross-culture communication. Humans have been communicating since four million years. On the other hand, the birth of culture is estimated to have taken place about 35,000 years ago. Today, both culture and communication have evolved considerably and have become interdependent of one another, to the point that communication is considered to be a product of culture. Thus, our own culture has a deep impact on our thoughts and behaviors. Since each culture has its distinct aspects, intercultural communication can be the cause of conflict and disorder. There are three main issues which are at the root of the problem of intercultural miscommunication : language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism. I will analyze these three notions in situations in which intercultural communication is frequent such as : the workplace, the classroom and vacation trips.
To elaborate, by mentioning intercultural understanding, I meant that each cultural group has different ways to communicate. For example, Western culture encourages people to be up-front and straight-forward with their communication; contrastly, people who are influenced by Eastern culture might be less outspoken about their ideas and pay a lot of attention to nonverbal language of the people around them. Culture is something that if one have never encountered or exposed to it, he or she would never know. I hope that after this project, besides of the knowledge we gained from the research itselves, all four of us would improve even more on our intercultural and interpersonal communication skills. Because at the end of the day, the knowledge that one have learnt might be forgotten, but all of the skills that one have gained will stay for a very long time.
