The factors impact on inter-professional communication skills for new graduate nurses in Australia:
The first year of professional practice can be very stressful transition period for some newly graduate nurses. Many new nurses are expected to perform with the same level of proficiency as other experienced nurses (Phillips, Esterman, & Kenny, 2015). Effective inter-professional communication is recognised as one of the most significant skill requisite for a professional performance in nursing. Firstly, lack of confidence which can be described as the effect of challenging situation that affect communication with patients, families and multiple health professional team members among new graduate nurses (Pfaff, Baxter, Jack, & Ploeg, 2013). The second is, language and culture barrier in inter-professional communication for new graduate nurses using English as a second language. Moreover, many overseas nurses can be seen in hospital setting as Australia has been actively involved the staffing of nurses for who English is a second language to deal with an increasingly acute shortage of nurses (Stankiewicz & O'Connor, 2014). Thirdly, lack of knowledge and experience among new graduates is also challenging while communicate with other healthcare professionals. For instance, newly graduates have lacking experience and knowledge in addressing necessary information to other healthcare team members regarding patient’s health condition. In addition, sometimes they confuse what information to offer, how to consult with medical officer and how to contribute in interdisciplinary rounds (Kelly & Ahern, 2008). The last but not least is, inadequate support from colleagues or ward environment is also impact on new nurse’s inter-professional communication.
