As a future university student dedicated to learning and discussing as much as I can, the Honors College has been my goal since I decided to attend Alabama. Because of my intense interest in academic discussion, literature, and rhetoric, I intend to become an English teacher with my degree. I feel strongly compelled because of my intended career path to receive the most complete and thorough education to which I have access. One of the main benefits of know I wanted to be a teacher for so many years is the opportunity I have had as a student to observe others. Teaching is the one profession that young people see most regularly, and this process of being educated in the same field I wish to work has given me time to contemplate what makes a
good teacher. From my experience as a student, which has obviously been most of my life thus far, I've been able to come to the conclusion that the most effective teachers have received good educations and worked hard to earn the knowledge they can now pass on. For me to emulate those I have come to believe are the most dedicated and successful career-wise, I hope to be challenged academically and to surround myself with people who also strive to be the best at what they do. I also believe that the smaller classes of the Honor's College on a large campus will present me with educational and experience-oriented benefits of what must usually be a binary decision. More people means more ideas to which I will be exposed, so the high student population of the university appeals to me in that sense, but the opportunity to work in smaller groups and thus make solid connections with peers and superiors alleviates any hesitation that a large campus might create. The university's Honors College Program seems to foster an environment that values all of these same attributes I find important, and I am confident in the quality of the education I can earn here.
In “The Case Against College” Linda Lee tells us exactly who belongs in college, they are “the high-achieving student who is interested in learning for learning’s sake…. And those who seem certain to go on to advanced degree’s in law, medicine, architecture, and the like,” (670). I endeavor to obtain excellence in my academics; I wish to exemplify scholarship by constantly asking the whys and hows of things. I will not let a bad grade define who I am as a student or who I will become. I also want to take the most challenging classes available, not because it will look good on my college application, but because I genuinely love the concept of learning and discovering new things. Education doesn’t end after high school, so I plan to attend university, eager to attain the knowledge to better understand my world: and expand it.

The story that Richard Rodriguez weaves in his essay “The Achievement of Desire” is one that almost every dedicated academic student can relate to. In this essay Rodriguez brings forth the ideas of idolizing teachers, being embarrassed by parents, and how academic students are not always thinking on a higher level, but instead collecting ideas of other people and building off of them. He relates all of these ideas to his experience with education from primary school until well beyond graduate school.
Don't get me wrong; my parents never mandated that I take all the honors classes I could gain admission to. No one told me to take three honors classes. No one, that is, except the little voice in my head that convinced me scholarly success was based upon the number of "H's" on my high-school transcript. The counselors cautioned me not to do it, students who had fallen into the trap before warned me against it and my parents just left it up to me. Through it all, I just smiled and reassured them, "Don't worry; I can handle it." The trouble was, I didn't have the slightest idea what lay ahead.
I have known from an early age that I’ve wanted to become a doctor. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after working with young children I have found that I love working with them, and have a connection with children. Currently, I am interested in becoming either a neonatologist or a general pediatrician so I can continue to work with young children.
Learning must begin with the teacher accepting the role of a learner by being willing to study and by being willing to apply oneself to becoming a professional educator, well prepared, and relentlessly endeavoring to advance one’s practice (Frere, 2005). As teachers apply themselves to becoming learners, then they can more aptly educate others. Teachers should not overlook professional preparation; however, they must also consider part of their efforts in scholarship to be constructing relationships with their students.
My contribution to the UIC Honor College community will include but not limited to community services, innovative research, acquire hands-on experience, and apply what I studied in class to real-life scenarios to make an impact on people’s lives. I have been in my School Honors Program since the sixth grade and understand that being in the honors college means more than just being academically advanced. I will bring qualities such as leadership, character, and service to the honors college community. These qualities are not foreign to me as I have demonstrated them throughout my school years. I have volunteered to tutor classmates who have struggled with their homework. I provided guidance and encouragement to classmates who struggle to maintain
Most people see teachers and professors in the same light. They perform similar tasks. They teach. However, they are separated by a fine line of distinction. High school teachers help a student build a foundation of knowledge, and train the student to focus on learning. College professors help to shape and define a student’s foundation of knowledge, and challenge the student to cultivate the mind. High school teachers and college professors have similar goals and guidelines, but they take a differing approach to achieving the end result. The way the class is conducted, academic expectations, and view of student responsibility are a few of the contrasts between high school teachers and college professors.

My ideal career would allow me to do something that interests me. I enjoy working with words and with numbers. I've also had success in the areas of technology and customer service.
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person has to make in their life. It is so important because that is what we will have to do to support ourselves throughout life. Imagine being stuck in a dead end job and having to go to work every morning and dreading it. That is no spending oneÕs time and life is too short to work 35 years and be unhappy with it. If a person likes the job they do then it is not work, because finding satisfaction out of a job can bring great happiness. That information has enabled me to make the decision of choosing my area of study and career in the field of Information Technology.
Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers. There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit-lifting emotions are the result of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on the profession first by stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession has the ability to present the “unique opportunity” for individuals to cast a positive influence upon others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole their individual needs, both educational and personal have been catered to, prompts a burst of passion in every teacher.
Not everyone can say have chosen their future career, but I can say that I have. My future career that I have chosen goes into the field of criminal justice and forensics work as a physiologist, which is also known as a clinical psychologist or criminal psychologist. A criminal psychologist works along the sides of the police force and detectives during a crime. I will tell you why I chose this career, why I was interested in the career, the requirements, the qualifications, how I plan to meet the qualifications of my career, the skills and attributes, and what the typical task are.
