Intellectual Development Disorder once referred to as mental retardation is a disability that classifies an individual with low mental ability and low intelligence level that negatively affects their ability to function normally (WebMD, 2016). While, there are children that were born with intellectual development disorder others develop the disease due to severe brain damages. A child with intellectual disability has challenges doing things for themselves because their learning ability is slower than that of a normal child. Activates such as reading, speaking, walking and dressing are arduous tasks for them. Other symptoms includes difficulty with problem solving or logical thinking, inability to connect actions with consequences and difficulty …show more content…
During my observation it was evident that Sam has intellectual disorder both mentally and physically because he displayed symptoms that are common with the disease. He had academic difficulty, I recognized his inability to read when Lucy was teaching him how to read. His immature behavior which was also noticeable at Lucy’s class party. Sam had an intelligence quotient have a 7 year old child, he sometimes referred to himself in the third person. Further observation lead me to his behavioral issues and slow language development. To justify my viewing of Sam’s behavior and speech problem I will make things more lucid by providing examples from the movie. In the scene where Lucy and Sam where having breakfast at Bob’s restaurant, Sam wanted pancakes that were similar to IHOP he began to have an explosive tantrum when the waitress/ restaurant did not have the pancake he wanted. In the Parent / Teacher meeting scene between Sam, Lucy’s teacher and principal, the teacher noticed that Lucy’s was holding herself back academically because of her father’s disability. In this scene the teacher told Sam that his records showed that his intelligence capacity was that of a 7 year old. His academic difficulty was also evident in the scene when he had offered to pay for his lawyer’s lunch, he was not able to check his money as fast as a normal
But life is not a fairytale. Standing there lonely, having no job is our Sammy. This is when Sam realizes his path, the true way to become mature. The moment when “Lengel sighs and begins to look very patient:” Sammy, you don’t want to do this to your mom and dad” (Updike) hold him back a little bit, we can feel the regret in his heart. But he cannot go back anymore, decision has been made. He gives up his last chance; from now on, he’s on his own. Sammy finally understands that it is responsible behavior but not playing “adult-like” game that will make him a true
He would lose interest and was also fatigue. In Sam’s manic state, he found it hard to concentrate; something was always distracting him. He was also very goal oriented. Sam believed he was on a mission to get America back on track. He also wanted to get people to vote for Bill Bradley at the time.
Intellectual disability or “mental retardation” is defined by the IDEA as, ‘significantly sub average general intellectual functioning, existing concurrently [at the same time] with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance’ (Special Education Guide, 2013-2017). Autism is defined by the IDEA as, ‘a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance’ (Special Education Guide, 2013-2017). Radio showed many signs of impairment in social interactions. He was scared to talk to new people and he froze up in new environments that he was not familiar with. He also had a hard time developing relationships with his peers and he lacked social
This lead to one of the biggest questions from the movie, how did he become that way? Hirschi’s Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people anticipating the consequences of their behavior”(Macionis 248). It was shown in the movie that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is a big reason as to why he acts so deviant in the future. On of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment is family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as one of Benny’s friends “crazy cousin”. It was clear that he did not enjoy having Sam around. This can reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he wasn’t even living with his parents. This would lead Sam to acting deviant without worrying about what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was kicked out of school based on his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once that relationship broke off. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. He was self conscious about that fact that he couldn 't write, so he never made attempts to move up in the world. He
Based on the seminal works, a person is stated to always be developing and dynamic, is motivated within their occupations, and is constantly interacting with their environment (Law, Cooper, Strong, Stewart, Rigby, & Letts, 1996). The way a person defines themselves will influence the person’s actions within their environment and how it is carried out through their occupational performance. While some qualities within a person are more responsive than others, almost all of the individual’s characteristics that are associated with this aspect are open to change (Law et al., 1996). This relates to the movie because in the beginning of the film, Sam was not capable of taking on many tasks. He started out with a job at Starbucks, where he just cleaned tables, organized the counters, and greeted individuals (DeLuca et al. & Nelson,
Mental retardation was renamed Intellectual Disability in the DSM-5. This was to guide away from relying on IQ test scores for the diagnosis of mental retardation and to try and rely more on day to day tasks that one should be doing for their age and cultural lifestyle. There are four levels of mental retardation, mild, moderate, severe, and profound. (Nolen-Hoeksema, 2011). The least severe of them is the mild mental retardation. Children...

Helping other help themselves is another skill Sam developed witch speaks to his EQ. When he notices that his Lawyer and her husband are constantly arguing. He says “you need to leave your husband” (2002. United States: New Line Home Entertainment.). This is something that she may have not noticed about her emotions, in which he was not making her happy. He displayed a trait that is helpful to others and surprising to see out of someone many consider to not be very smart. Throughout this film Sam displays many tendencies of poor communication skills, as he was not given the skill set mentally to be able to excel. However, when people take the time to see his positive traits they absolutely make up for what he lacks. He makes up for everything with displaying traits that most of us are unable to. He makes up for it with love. Sam while many would believe he has a very low EQ while he just does better in some fields than the others. All in all, Sam’s mental illness may not be such an
In summary, Daniel is a 4-year and 2-month-old boy undergoing developmental assessment. The results of testing today showed that Daniel has many strengths but is struggling in some area relating to social communication. Information from all the sources will be reviewed. I will meet again with Daniel’s parents and we will review the findings of our testing and discuss Daniel’s overall clinical picture as well as make recommendations for future plans. I will plan to send a note at that time.
Having minimal knowledge of children, access to resources, and knowledge of own self-care, Sam had difficulty keeping up with simple things, like adequately feeding a newborn child. He had to reach out to his neighbor for assistance, who taught him to time the feedings along with specific television shows he watches. Additionally, every Wednesday is movie night, Thursdays are IHOP (with French pancakes, fruit on the side), and Sam I Am is the daily selection for a bedtime story. Unfortunately, though very functional, Sam struggles with even just the slightest deviation from his regular routine. For example, one evening Lucy brought home the book Stellaluna and Sam struggled to read aloud to his daughter.

The term Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) refers a group of disorders that pertain to one’s communication, social, and developmental skills. Symptoms can be detected as early as infancy, as some cases are identified before the age of three. Children or toddlers with PDD may show difficulty relating to others and often have trouble using and understanding language. In addition, they may have unusual behavior patterns and demonstrate resistance during a change in their routine. PDD is a general category that includes Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and PDD-NOS. These disorders exhibit a range of patterns and characteristics, proving that no child is the same. While one child may be high-functioning, another may completely lack language skills.
It was observed a 5th grade elementary student, that for privacy we will name him J during this case study. He arrived to the school in the second semester of Fourth grade and he has being diagnose under the umbrella of the Autism spectrum from the previous school documentation. J was served by the Especial Education content Mastery (“as known Especial Ed. Classroom”) in period of times during the day, but he was place in a regular education classroom. He immediately presented behavioral issues due to the transition of a new environment and his learning disabilities. After a couple incidences, the administrator called the ARD committee to meet and review his IEP and place new behavioral strategies to follow. J made it through the year with continue incidences where he spend most of the time in the Content Mastery classroom. At the beginning of the 5th grade year they continue with the strategies that were in place from previous year; those were making a changed, not a constant issue, but once in a while his outburst were severe to the point that he got so angry that he broke a glass door, others where he just run away from the classroom crying and went into a bathrooms or outside to the playground stating that he had problems with his sugar levels; “sometimes it has difficult to identify if the cause of his outburst was cause by the diabetes or the autism” as the teacher aide stated.
“I am Sam” (2002) is an inspiring melodrama of Sam Dawson (Sean Penn), a young man with developmental disabilities and a single father to Lucy (Dakota Fanning). While the film did not specify the specific condition, it is believed that Sam had a mental capacity of a 7 year old. Sam and Lucy lived a comfortable independent life at a small apartment and were surrounded by supportive friends who also had developmental disabilities. Sam was able to raise and provide a loving and safe environment for Lucy until one day Sam found himself in a courtroom fighting to regain custody of Lucy who was taken away because he was believed to be incapable of raising a 7 year old girl who has a higher mental capacity than him. This movie is truly inspirational,
