This timeless quote was written by a man who truly stood by his integrity. Abraham Lincoln knew that integrity was important in all aspects of life and that a person must be willing to live up to their actions. Integrity means something different to everybody. For many, it is the self-motivated desire to remain steadfast to one’s own principles such as honestly, responsibility, and conduct. For others, integrity might be maintaining fairness and honor through difficult trials. Although integrity itself is an intangible characteristic deep within the conscious, the degree of one’s integrity is readily seen in their actions. Integrity is an important attribute for many careers in the American society. Leaders of all levels find themselves in roles of responsibility, and the decisions and actions they make influence the well-being of others. These leaders may take the form of doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, business owners, parents, and so on. Without integrity, these positons are susceptible to beginning corrupted by selfishness and dishonesty. Whether it be a day to day decision or a lead role on a team, it is important for the working engineer to constantly practice a role of integrity. This begs the question – what does integrity look like in the life of a civil engineer? This question turns out to be extremely broad if intended to pinpoint ever possible scenario; however, it turns out that the core principles of integrity can be broadly described in such a way as to form a guide for nearly all situations.
