The Sports Writer: An Argumentative Analysis

We all may have been asked the question: How is sports approached? If one were to ask that question to everyone, there will be some different answers. The role of sport in communities and the role of the sports writer can have different visions for everyone. For instance, some may think it is meant to be a social gathering to meet up with people who have a common interest. A role for the sports writer can be different among people as well. Some may think it is an event he or she must attend and write about to earn that big paycheck; or it may be a passion for that writer to attend the event and analyze the venue, players, rituals, etc. However, one thing is for sure, and that is every vision is different. Two sportswriters, Red Smith and George Packer, offer their visions of the role of sport in communities and the role of the sports writer, each, of course, being different from the other. Smith (1982) approaches sport as entertainment only (p. 3). Packer (2004) approaches it as a serious manner to build nations and as an arena for political messages (p. 2-3). Most of all, it must be worthy of respect and attention. Studies show that many domains of human excellence and achievement have their own inner logic and beauty and deserve respect, but they also entertain. This can bring joy and appreciation to all people (Dobel, 2013, p. 3). We (the people of Earth) can cover a huge range of experiences with respect and attention of entertainment such as reading literature, attending concerts, conversing with a friend, or playing or watching a game. Respecting the activity gives attention to the particular cause. The attention one gives to the event creates personal interest, joy, and entertainment that one can enjoy.
