The purpose of an instructional specialist is “to align instruction with curriculum to meet the needs of all students.” XXXXXXX In order to support teachers, an instructional specialist must have a wealth of knowledge, be an effective teacher, and recognize the great challenges of the role. Above all, the instructional specialist must believe that all students can learn; the achievement gap between groups of students is unacceptable. First, an instructional specialist must have a great desire to learn. They must have a deep understanding of research that has been done on instructional strategies and how to best align instruction with various content areas. The instructional specialist needs to be aware of research-based instructional strategies that effectively meet needs of students. It is about management, motivation, and instruction. Teachers need to know how to design their classroom so that the children are going to get the most efficient learning environment for them. For example, students who are visual learners or have attention problems, should sit near the front. Teachers must be experts in motivation. Instructional Coaching (IC), described in Instructional Coaching: A Partnership Approach to Improving Instruction (Knight, 2007), provides intensive, differentiated support to teachers so that they are able to implement proven practices. The Conceptual Framework is centered on the educational professional and several themes that support the professional practice. This assignment will use the previous week’s focus group participant responses that summarized the expectations of characteristics and types of support offered by an effective coach or mentor within the teacher’s school. Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy is important and must be embedded in planning, because in order to be a great teacher you need to know what you are teaching and the best way to teach it to your students. If an instructor does not possess a deep knowledge of what they are teaching it will be difficult to successfully engage students in discussion, promote questioning, and answer their questions. Teachers with a strong knowledge of the content they are teaching are able to present new information by linking it to previous information, address misconceptions, and plan activities and exercises to successfully engage students.
