Before my years at NDSU began, the Table existed. It is a place to hang out on campus and kill some time that would be better spent otherwise. It is a place where friends through various places and all walks of life come together in a long-since staked out territory to have discussions that vary from normal, to just plain bizarre and others that often border the taboo. If people are between classes and have free time that they aren’t spending studying, they are at the Table. It is our rendez vous point. It becomes a place for us to not worry, to kick back and relax and leave behind the usual version of what people call reality.
I attended the URI Professional Development Week Etiquette Dinner on Thursday, November 17th. During this event, we were served a four-course meal, while a speaker spoke to us about the rules of etiquette in a business setting. The speaker was Dean Libutti, the vice provost of the university. The program for the etiquette dinner was one that he has presented many times.
The dining room is attached to our kitchen; it is a small room, just large enough to fit our large oak dining room table. Around the table sits six large, old, creaky chairs. Week after week, year after year, we are always in the same formation around that table. My father sits at the head of the table, it is a position that illustrates respect and is furthest away from the kitchen, perhaps saying he wants nothing to do with the cooking and cleaning up duties. Close to the wall with books and papers haphazardly placed all over its surface sits the one piece of furniture no home can do without one. Some purchase this piece of furniture to fill up a space in a home and eat a meal or two. For others, it is a nothing more than a pretty addition to a beautiful home topped with an elegant table runner and properly placed plates and silverware. This furnishing comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors made of wood, stone, metal, and plastic. For most, the dining room table is a gathering place to share stories of their day and enjoy fellowship together. The family table in our house is plain, aging, and well used, not fancy and untouched.

A meal should include some sort of main dish, such as a lasagna or a roast, with a variety of sides, a meal that you know would be easy and enjoyable for your guests to eat. Sides can include salad, chips, small sandwiches or anything else that might go with your main dish. Dessert is also an important part of a celebration, cake is the most common dessert of choice but any dessert you enjoy will work. Decorations can also be an important part of making a birthday party special, this part however is not essential to making the party great. If applicable, consider things such as a happy birthday banner, party hats and festive paper dining. You may also consider a themed party and that includes specific decorations corresponding with the theme. For example a Harry Potter theme would include wands and robes and things of that nature. The final part of this step is confirming and counting how many people will be attending your party as to make sure you have enough food and utensils for everyone.
