Most people get diabetes when cells in the body are unable to respond to insulin or the production of insulin is impaired leading to poor metabolism of glucose in the bloodstream. The result is high amounts of glucose in the blood which is the cause of major diabetes symptoms such as reduced healing ability, chronic fatigue, excess thirst and urination, blurred vision, and weight loss.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as of 2015, a third of Americans were living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Those living with diabetes constituted nine percent of the population. The report further revealed that diagnosis of diabetes increased with age. The older you got, the higher the risk of being diagnosed. However, there are scientifically proven measures that can be taken to help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. What are some of these measures?

Avoid alcohol and smoking

Excess alcohol drinking has been found to be associated with low blood sugar levels. Too much alcohol in the bloodstream hinders the liver from converting glycogen to glucose. Chronic alcohol intake leads to impaired pancreas function, leading to low production of insulin. According to Mayo Clinic, men 65-years-old or younger should not take more than two drinks in a day.

Smokers are 30 percent more likely to develop diabetes type 2 than nonsmokers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Smoking increases buildup of toxins in the body which leads to increased blood clotting. This results in the narrowing of blood vessels and in effect, unavailability of sugar in the cells.
