Did you know that somewhere between 15,000 to 18,000 new creatures are discovered each year? Out of these new animals, about how many land animals do you think there are? Out of the number of land animals, what sort of animals do you think could someday get discovered? Possibly even mythical beings some day. Not just monsters, but maybe even peaceful creatures. Are you thinking about what creature I'm thinking of? I’m thinking of a creature that has the body of a horse or donkey and is famous for its magical horn. Yes, I’m thinking of the Unicorn. The Unicorn is a creature that that can be found throughout history, possesses many magical abilities and has many different relationships with different creatures.
The Unicorn can be spotted controversially throughout history, in China, the Bible, European mythology, and many other places. Back then, the unicorn myth

The Unicorn is most of the time peaceful, but they do attack some animals. The Unicorn’s main enemy is the elephant and “Jewish legend says they can kill an elephant” ("the Junglebook"). The Unicorn kills the elephant with its immense strength when attacked. The Unicorn is also the enemy of a lion, which “the Lion, upon seeing the unicorn, seizes the unicorn in his jaws”(Thomson) The unicorn will, therefore, attack the lion with its back legs, but the fights between these two creatures are mostly fair. The Unicorn does not “pose a threat to humans, or any other creature that does not seek first to harm them.” ("Royal Mint Publishing INC") They only attack animals that want to harm them, and otherwise, do not bother humans. Other than the elephant and the lion, the unicorn does not have contact with a lot of other creatures. They prefer to live solitary in the desert the majority of the time. The Unicorn may have a few enemies, but it will always be a friend to humans and many other creatures.
An excited crowd waits expectantly to see the horse, cowboy, and calf burst out of the chute. Within seconds, the cowboy has the calf roped, on the ground, and tied. The action appears effortless. Two wranglers release the calf, and it trots out of the arena, seemingly unharmed. The question remains, are rodeos humane? That does the calf think of all this excitement? Contrary to what many people assume, PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) sanctioned rodeos treat their livestock humanely.
Another interpretation of the tapestries as a wedding gift can view the story as the unicorn being a lover who endures various hardships to win his lady's love; he had to suffer to win her heart. In the last tapestry the unicorn is now wearing the "chain of love" around his neck and surrounded by a fence, perhaps to show he is now tamed and domesticated by his lady's affection.
Later you will see myths of hairy creatures in medieval Europe. In the European myths, the hairy creature does not have horns or a tail and more closely resembles the bigfoot we know today. Bigfoot has been a myth and a traditional part of folklore for centuries, but real sightings of the creature have only started in the early 1800s. Stories and sightings then became increasingly common as the years went by.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Grand champion! I was riding Fancy, a paint horse, at the Dallas County Fair in the Horsemanship class. In this class, I had to complete a pattern and it was judged on how well each horse and rider completed the pattern. The judge felt that Fancy and I performed best and awarded me with a big purple ribbon and a trophy with a horse on top. At the end of the fair, all of the grand champions were announced before the races. That was the final reward for successfully showing a horse in competitions.
Over the recent centuries, the definition of myth has decayed into a word synonymous with falsehoods and lies. This idea of myths being completely false and therefore useless is a fairly modern one. To combat the rise of empirical science in the 1900s, theologians brought the idea of wholly literal, fundamental religion into being to combat ideas that did not perfectly align with the tenants of the religion (May 24). This was the final death blow to the idea of the metaphysical myth that was already wounded from thousands of years of being denounced as pagan or barbaric. The rise of empirical science also lent to the decay of the meaning of myth. Science was able to explain the natural world far better than a myth ever could; however, it lacked the metaphysical aspect. Due to these rising ideologies, myths hav...
For decades, Scientists have contemplated the idea of using horses for the personal gain of children and adults with needs such as autism, heart conditions, anxiety, stress, and other disorders that have yet to be curable. Horses such as Chester, a twenty year old gelding has encouraged more young riders who face difficulties such as social skills, behavior skills, and those who are physically indisposed. The phrase confidence is key, becomes important when people of all ages interact with a horse. Learning confidence may not be as easy as it sounds but is a necessary step to bond with a horse; without it, there can be no trust and most importantly, no bond between the equine and its rider.
Myths relate to events, conditions, and deeds of gods or superhuman beings that are outside ordinary human life and yet basics to it” ("Myth," 2012). Mythology is said to have two particular meanings, “the corpus of myths, and the study of the myths, of a particular area: Amerindian mythology, Egyptian mythology, and so on as well as the study of myth itself” ("Mythology," 1993). In contrast, while the term myth can be used in a variety of academic settings, its main purpose is to analyze different cultures and their ways of thinking. Within the academic setting, a myth is known as a fact and over time has been changed through the many different views within a society as an effort to answer the questions of human existence. The word myth in an academic context is used as “ancient narratives that attempt to answer the enduring and fundamental human questions: How did the universe and the world come to be? How did we come to be here? Who are we? What are our proper, necessary, or inescapable roles as we relate to one another and to the world at large? What should our values be? How should we behave? How should we not behave? What are the consequences of behaving and not behaving in such ways” (Leonard, 2004 p.1)? My definition of a myth is a collection of false ideas put together to create
The tales of Greek heroes and the gods are older than all of us. Most of these tales are thought to be myths, but every interpretation of Greek mythology and the stories that it contains correlates with something in the real world today. The story of the creation of the world, and the stories of the heroes Hercules, Perseus and Theseus, are only but a few of the compelling stories Greek mythology has to offer.
Throughout history people have always been telling stories, whether it is how some ones day went or something strange they saw. One place that has a particularly strong connection with storytelling is Ireland. Telling stories in Ireland was usually for entertainment told at a bar or by the fire in a friend’s home to hear what someone else saw or experienced leaving one with new knowledge. Fairy- legends were stories that were told quite often in conversational type settings telling people something they had heard of experienced about the fairies. The people of Ireland used to strongly believe in the fairies during the nineteenth century. Fairies are not human but look somewhat similar to us except that are usually a lot paler. They live their
“All the Pretty Horses”, a novel written by Cormac McCarthy tells the tale about a man and his friend travelling the plains of Mexico after leaving their homes in Texas. As the novel’s name alludes to, horses are a central theme in the story as they represent manhood and freedom when John Grady, the protagonist, and his friend Rawlins get thrown in jail. McCarthy’s novel became critically-acclaimed which gained him more recognition, as well as a movie adaptation directed by Billy Bob Thornton. Even though Thornton’s adaption has the basics of the novel’s story it does not appropriately grasps its depth. While Thornton’s version stays faithful to the dialogue from the book’s included scenes it does fall short by having an erratic pace, having
The name “Earth” has not been used in 50 years. The year is 3024, and what once was Earth is now Unicornlandia, a world ruled by Unicorns and girls. Males are banned from this utopia, so they have inhabited Jupiter. Women, who are now more empowered than ever since men left, created a way to produce Unicorns freely, using artificial materials that they created. The women also figured out a way to make artificial sperms so the world can repopulate after males were banned. Nobody speaks of men, in fears of bringing them back somehow. It was a wonderful and perfect world to all the women and girls, who now don’t have to confine to society’s standards, since there is no society that judges them. Aliens and extraterrestrials often come down to
We all grew up hoping that we were the princesses who met the dreamy prince and lived ‘happily ever after’ like in a fairytale.People debate over whether or not Disney fairytales are beneficial for children. Like Melissa Taylor the author of the piece ‘10 reasons why kids need to read non disney fairy tales’, I am against disneyfied fairy tales. In this essay I will argue on why kids should not only watch disney fairytales but also the real versions.

Molly Grace Busby Mrs. Taylor PreAP English II 8 April 2014 The Effects of Fairy Tales on Romance Fairy tales vs. reality in romance. Fairy tales have been a part of our lives for as long as we can remember, and they have long lasting repercussions.
