You've seen snowflakes dancing in the wind outside. The thing you don't know about is the journey those tiny snowflakes have been on. These snowflakes have conditions they need to form. The clouds they stay in won’t let them go until those conditions are met. After they’re let go they fall, and their journey begins. Snowflakes are rather amazing things, but some people make fake flakes, don’t look at its appearance, and don’t know how snowflakes form. To begin with, people tend to make fake snowflakes, even teachers decorates with fake flakes. According to “Fake Flakes,” Snowflakes typically have six sides. Likewise, Link’s tales have a surrealistic milieu. In her stories, she often uses mythical characters such as ghosts, Greek deities, and fairy tale characters. In her short story “The Specialist’s Hat”, a supernatural being named The Specialist possesses a hat which two young children find with their babysitter. At the end of the story, the creature appears inside their house, causing the character to escape through the chimney. Another story, titled “Travels of the Snow Queen”, involves a character from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name. Also, this story features appearances by “Sleeping Beauty” character Briar Rose, as well. Additionally, “Travels of the Snow Queen” features talking animals in the story, such as a reindeer
And this is where we start with our image. Then Oliver adds, “began here this morning and all day” (2-3) which immediately changes your image to this beginning of the day where the snow is only just starting to fall. Also, Oliver seems to personify the snow by saying “it’s white rhetoric everywhere”(4-5) by giving the sense of knowledge to the snow. Oliver is showing this knowledge that the snow has by playing with this word “rhetoric” meaning having the art of persuasive speaking, so it shows how this snow is grabbing our attention. And then it continues with “calling us back to why, how, whence such beauty and what the meaning;” (6-8) this changes your image of snow greatly to making you think of snow as a greater power leading you to seek questions. This is an automatic change from snow to self. Then it transitions back to the focus back on snow, “flowing past windows,” (9-10) and you are then again transferred back to this image of snow fluttering through the wind, but you also have your thoughts of the unknown and you are relating it to the snow all of this unknown is just floating
Winter’s Bone is a movie based off of a novel that revolves around seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly who looks over her mentally ill mother, her twelve-year-old brother Sonny, and six-year-old sister Ashlee. She basically plays the role of the mother by caring for her family day in and day out, making sure everybody eats, while at the same time, teaching them how to survive by teaching them how to hunt and cook. Their father, Jessup, is nowhere to be found after he was released on bail after being caught for manufacturing methamphetamine. After being told that if their father does not show up for the court date, they will lose their house (because it was put up for collateral as part of his bail), Ree sets out in search of her father on a path where danger is very common and drugs are very readily accessible. She began her journey by contracting her drug-addict uncle Teardrop before venturing off to the local drug lord: Thump Milton. The only information she receives here is that her father either died in a meth lab explosion or he skipped town to evade the police and avoid arrest. After, Jessup fails to appear for his trial, the bondsman informs Ree that she has about a week before they take hold over their house and the land and to avoid such an occurrence, she would need proof that her father is indeed dead and has not just skipped town. The end result is that she ends up getting saved by Teardrop after getting beaten up by a bunch of thugs when she goes to search for her father again. He tells her that her father was killed because he was suspected of informing on other meth manufacturers. The Dust Bowl was a treacherous storm, which occurred in the 1930's, that affected the midwestern people, for example the farmers, and which taught us new technologies and methods of farming. As John Steinbeck wrote in his 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath: "And then the dispossessed were drawn west- from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico; from Nevada and Arkansas, families, tribes, dusted out. Carloads, caravans, homeless and hungry; twenty thousand and fifty thousand and a hundred thousand and two hundred thousand. They streamed over the mountains, hungry and restless - restless as ants, scurrying to find work to do - to lift, to push, to pull, to pick, to cut - anything, any burden to bear, for food. The kids are hungry. We got no place to live. Like ants scurrying for work, for food, and most of all for land." The early thirties opened with prosperity and growth. At the time the Midwest was full of agricultural growth. The Panhandle of the Oklahoma and Texas region was marked contrast to the long soup lines of the Eastern United States.
In book one of the metamorphoses, Ovid talks of artists, and how art can be used to create and transform. Metamorphoses means transformation or change, so in one word, Ovid’s title tells the reader what is to come. Ovid uses art in the Metamorphoses to prove a point. To show how strong the human spirit is, or to teach you to watch what you say, because you never know who is around. The story of Arachne displays a great example of watching what you say. Minerva hears Arachne saying that she is the greatest weaver, and Minerva sets out to prove her wrong. With Daedalus and Icarus, Daedalus uses his art to try and find an escape for him and his son. Showing just how strong he is and how much he cares for his son. For Pygmalion, his art shows the power of his love and how much he wants to find the proper woman for himself.
Grimm wrote “Snow White” with the intention of socializing children of Germany. Grimm had specific goals with his writing, and when Disney adapted “Snow White,” certain aspects of the tale were changed. Disney sought to showcase the utopian society which he hoped his interpretation of the fairy tale would create. This utopian society which Disney wished to create showed a regression in the realm of storytelling. Instead of focusing on character development and morals, focus was placed on showcasing film techniques. Furthermore, the changes that Disney implemented from Grimm’s version showed a change in the hero of the work. This is especially seen in the comparison of Grimm’s “Snow White” and Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Throughout the history of the United States, never before was there a longer period of dust storms to occur as The Dust Bowl, most commonly known as “the dirty thirties.” The Dust Bowl affected farmers in parts of the United States and Canada, but it was most commonly found in the Southwest/Midwest. Unlike other severe catastrophes which caused damage to ones ecology and agriculture, “Georg Borgstrom, has ranked the creation of the Dust Bowl as one of the three worst ecological blunders in history” (Worster 4) due to the fact it only took fifty years to accomplish. Many living in the Southern plains during this time of period struggled to maintain a living, “The bank, the fifty-thousand-acre owner can’t be responsible. You’re on land that isn’t yours. Once over the line maybe you can pick cotton in the fall. Maybe you can go on relief. Why don’t you go to California? There’s work there, and it never gets cold” (Steinbeck 23). The greed within the farmers during the 18th century unfortunately led to the Dust Bowl because they were too focussed on obtaining available rich acres to expand their industry and business for money. Ultimately, this led to the occurrence of “Black Sunday,” the migration of farmers fleeing to the Western parts of America, and the economic factors of those affected by the Dust Bowl.
Antisocial personality disorder is a personality disorder marked by a general pattern of disregard for a violation of other people’s rights. Explanations of antisocial personality disorder come from the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and biological models. As with many other personality disorders, psychodynamic theorists propose that this disorder starts with an absence of parental love during infancy leading to a lack of basic trust. In this view, the children that develop this disorder respond to early inadequacies by becoming emotionally distant, and they bond with others through use of power and destructiveness. Behavioral theorists have suggested that antisocial symptoms may be learned through modeling, or imitation. As evidence, they point to the higher rate of antisocial personality disorder found among the parents of people with this disorder. Other behaviorists suggest that some parent’s unintentionally teach antisocial behavior by regularly awarding a child’s aggressive behavior. The cognitive view says that people with this disorder hold attitudes that trivialize the importance of other people’s needs. Cognitive theorists also believe that these people have a genuine difficulty recognizing a point of view other than their own. Finally studies show that biological factors may play an important role in developing antisocial disorder. Researchers have found that antisocial people, particularly those with high impulse and aggression, display lower serotonin activity and has been linked this same activity with other studies as well.
The environment has always influenced mankind throughout the course of our history. The Ice Age engendered a mass extinction of the human population, forcing the early Homo Sapiens to migrate into suitable regions and drastically changing the livelihood of mankind in 70,000 BC (NPR). Likewise, the Dust Bowl, a period of severe dust storms that damaged the prairie lands of the Great Plain between 1934 and 1937, greatly influenced the livelihood of the American citizens in the 1930s. It mainly affected the states of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico where 2.5 million people had moved out of these regions by 1940 (PBS), desperately searching for jobs which were already scarce during the period of the Great Depression. Segregation in educational institutions taking place in the United States is not often talked about. People may consider apartheid schooling taking place presently to a nation that does not respect basic human rights. Thus, the injustices taking place in public schools are not easily classified because it is commonplace to many. It can be argued that apartheid schooling was never completely dismantled in the United States. Jonathan Kozol’s book The Shame of the Nation (2005) provides evidence and insight to apartheid within the educational system that children are currently experiencing. The structure in children’s curriculum, the way they are spoken to as well as the funding public schools are funded are examples to the inequalities that children face. Conceptually, structural violence is what keeps educational injustices to recur.
Roses are red, violets are blue, Snow White has changed, everything’s new. This is a different beginning than the original story of Little Snow White by the Grimm Brothers and retold by the director Rupert Sanders, in the movie Snow White and the Huntsman. The original story portrays Snow White as a beautiful, but naive, young woman, leading up to her eating a poisoned apple from the evil queen. The evil queen has been jealous of Snow White after she has grown up and become more beautiful. Although in both the story and the movie, Snow White eats a poisoned apple, Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman is portrayed as more brave and courageous, even after she wakes up from the poisoned apple. In the end, both the story and the movie show that Snow White’s triumphs out rules all, no matter what is thrown at her, but the difference is in how. Snow White by the Brothers Grimm explores the theme of insecurity which can be defined as one’s subjective evaluation of his or her own self. The fairytale is a story about a Queen who seeks to be the prettiest by constantly asking her mirror “Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?.” Initially it was always her; however, as the story progresses and as her stepdaughter Snow White matures, the mirror states that Snow White is the fairest. This causes the step-mother to try to kill Snow White through a huntsman, using a comb, a corset, and finally an apple. This mirror phrase seems to raise more and more anger the more it is asked. One could assume that the mirror is the judging factor in the phrase, but after a closer look on a psychological level, the
...ase after an immortal Spirit. This is a highly figurative expression of science with a double meaning. Furthermore, Shelley continues to describe the cloud in terms of bird imagery. Like a bird, the cloud soars on the wind. In addition the cloud boastfully exclaims his deity. He does this by inferring he is not mortal. In this same stanza Shelley gives an intense reflection on the activity of the cloud during the night. Then Shelley displays a glowing representation of nature by alluding to biblical images. The devout Anglican would easily pick up on this reflection and relate the likeness in his head. Finally, the last stanza displays the life cycle of a cloud. Shelley does this by describing the precipitation cycle in poetic language.
