Introduction

The main intent of this paper is to inform parents about children with dyslexia. As many as 17 percent of the U.S. schoolchildren may have dyslexia and it is the most common identified learning issue, as many as 85 percent of students with learning disabilities have dyslexia (Understanding Dyslexia, Lapkin 2014). The first part of this paper will include the definition of dyslexia. Also, this paper will discuss accommodations/modifications that are for teachers/parents. Following will be some resources that are available for the child to go to for more assistance.

Definition
On the American Dyslexia Association website they give a scholarly definition by Dr. Astrid Kopp-Duller were he defined it as:

An example would be their social skills, “struggling in school can make your child feel inferior around the other kids. Your child may stop trying to make new friends or may avoid group activities. Your child may also have trouble understanding jokes or sarcasm” (Lapkin). Another would be listening comprehension, “people with this tend to be better listeners than readers. But dyslexia can make it hard to filter out background nosie. This means your child could have trouble following what the teacher is saying in a noisy classroom. Sitting near the teacher can help reduce distractions” (Lapkin). The child may also have trouble with memory, “some take so long to read a sentence that they not remember the sentence that came before it. This makes it tough to grasp the meaning of the text.” A couple other things that they children have a hard time with is Navigation and time management, the children “may struggle with the concepts of life and right . . . it can also make it hard to tell time or stick to a schedule”
