There are more then 3 million cases of anxiety in the United States per year. I am on of those cases. I struggle with anxiety each and every single day. It’s not as awful as it use to be but it can easily be triggered. Numerous individuals don’t understand how it is to have anxiety, but I would like to share what it is like to live with it on a daily basis. To comprehend it one must first thoroughly understand it, then recognize what it is like through somebody’s eyes, and also how people get help to cope with it. Anxiety is a mental disorder described by sentiments of worry or fear that are sufficiently strong enough to interfere with ones daily activities. Stress, worry, and inability to let the worry go are symptoms of anxiety. People can become fatigue, restless, and it can cause excess sweating. People can go to doctors and get recommended antidepressants to help. The doctor may suggest exercise, a healthy diet, or counseling before taking meds. Zoloft is an example of a medication they might endorse. It can take up to two weeks to six months depending on the person. Alcohol should be avoided if on any medication for this disorder, because the disorder could be worsened. Counseling is another form to help cope with it. I used to go to a counselor for it but now with work and school I find it hard to attend. There are also support groups people can go to. They discuss people’s fears, what it is like for them, and steps they can take to help get through the day. Simply discussing it can truly help. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is another technique psychologists may use. It teaches people to manage their fears by figuring out the main cause of their disorder. I would personally suggest counseling though because it’s nice to have someone to talk to that
Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety defined means “distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune” defined by Dictionary.com. In the epic poem of Beowulf, one could say that the townspeople had anxiety when it came to Grendel because they feared what he could do to them.
It is never pleasant to feel anxious or distressed for any reason. However, there are several people who are diagnosed with anxiety disorders as they are very prevalent today. Mental health professionals are helping people overcome hurdles such as panic attacks, severe worry, social anxiety and other specific phobias. I think that anxiety is an emotion that everyone experiences at one time or another in their life. Anxiety can have a negative effect on an individual if it interferes with one’s daily routine and keeps them from doing what they normally do.
Anxiety is a feeling of tension associated with a sense of threat of danger when the source of the danger is not known. In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. Everyday that I can think of I have some kind of anxiety though out that day. Anxiety warns us and enables us to get ready for the ‘fight or flight’ response. However, heightened anxiety is emotionally painful. It disrupts a person's daily functioning.
In order to treat the fear you must treat it with relaxation while in the presence of the feared situation. The first step in Wolpe’s study was to focus on relaxing your body. He recommended a process that involves tensing and relaxing various groups of muscles until a deep state of relaxation is achieved (Wolpe,264). The second stage was to develop a list of anxiety-producing situations that are associated with the phobia. The list would descend with from the least uncomfortable situation to the most anxiety producing event you can imagine. The number of events can vary from 5 to 20 or more. The final step is to desensitize, which is the actual “unlearning” of the phobia. Wolpe told his patients that no actual contact with the fear is necessary, and that the same effectiveness can be accomplished through descriptions and visualizations(Wolpe,265). Wolpe’s participants are told to put themselves in a state of relaxation which they are taught. Then, the therapist begins reading the first situation on the hierarchy they have made up. If the patient stays relaxed through the first situation the therapist continues to the next until the state of relaxation is broken. One way to treat social phobia is called psychotherapy, which teaches the person different ways of thinking and behaving to situations to learn new social skills. Another common treatment is anti-anxiety medication and that should not be taken for long periods of time because it could possibly cause suicidal thoughts.
Having anxiety is common and a part of everyday life however; there is a huge difference between a fear and a social phobia or anxiety disorder. The difference and important distinction psychoanalysts make between a fear and a phobia is “a true phobia must be inconsistent with the conscious learning experience of the individual” (Karon 1). Patients with true phobias “do not respond to cognitive therapy but do respond well to psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy” (Karon 2). Social phobia is a serious anxiety disorder that should not be taken lightly or mistaken as a fear you will simply grow out of the older you get. Social phobia has the power to destroy lives and can prevent people from living and enjoying their life to the fullest. Social phobia is a disabling condition that often starts between the ages of early childhood and late adolescence. The origins of social phobia can be linked to “traumatic social experiences and social isolation” (Hudson118-120). Social phobia is treatable however; research and statics show that not many seek help.
How do people see the world? When communicating with others, thinking about oneself, and examining the world, each person adopts a specific lens through which they perceive their life. It has been stated that mental disorders like anxiety can dramatically alter this lens, shift a person’s worldview, or greatly modify their personality. It is my desire to study this phenomena and discover consistent differences in the perspectives of those with anxiety. I begin with a question: Do those with anxiety disorders bear a different and distinct perspective on universal concepts such as the world, life itself, and relation to others? Previous research seems to suggest that those suffering from anxiety disorders do hold these similar and distinct mindsets (Video).

As soon as I wake up in the morning, I hear my brain freaking out about the day ahead of me. What do I eat for breakfast? What do I do first when I get home from school? What happens if I get in a car crash on my way to school? A million thoughts at one time racing through my head. I never have the time to process all of them. Most mornings, I lay in my bed and have to take a few deep breaths to begin my hectic but not so hectic day. That’s just the beginning. It’s safe to say that I feel that I 'm an anxious person and that I have an anxiety disorder.
Treatment is available and extremely helpful for those suffering with a phobia. Medications and therapy both work well in the majority of cases. In a majority of cases a portion of the therapy is dedicated to causal exposure to the phobia. The exposure is gradually increased until the individual is comfortable in the situation without experiencing an anxiety attack. Group therapy is also beneficial as the individual is exposed to other suffering through the same fears.

Facing your fears is not an option if you are scared of the fear itself. Having support from someone could prevent a panic attack and help tremendously because it is always comforting to know you are not alone. The most effective way to help someone with an anxiety disorder is first understanding the differences between feeling nervous and owning anxiety disorders. It is an illness that is capable of dealing a lot of damage to a person’s mental health, and without proper help can be fatal. Anxiety disorders can easily evolve into depression and can make a person feel trapped or even suicidal. Knowing the proper procedures can greatly affect people with these disorders and could possibly save someone’s life.
When you think of emotions you think of the classic, sadness, happiness, and madness. The one people often forget is the emotion of anxiety. Anxiety is one of the only emotions that you can have and actually not show it. Anxiety itself is very strange, depending on who you are, and how your brain works, anything can cause it . Anxiety usually follows you throughout your life but for some people, it changes as you change and grow. You aren 't the same height as you were when you were 6, you grew. Anxiety is our body’s reaction to stressful dangerous or unfamiliar situations (“What is Anxiety,” n.d.). Everyone has anxiety at times and this is necessary in human beings but some people have it much worse than others. Anxiety disorder makes life more difficult to cope with, it keeps people from sleeping, socializing with their peers and it makes it hard to concentrate (“What is Anxiety,”n.d.). So, what is the cause of anxiety? How can we tell if a person is suffering from an anxiety disorder? What are the different types of anxiety disorders around us?
Fear can have such a powerful grasp on my mind that it will cause me to be consumed with it. Understand that I have the power to control my thoughts. Memorize encouraging quote and when the feelings of fear creep into my mind, I repeat this over and over until it becomes the guiding thought. When I leverage the power of shutting down undesirable thoughts with optimistic statement, I create a gate of opportunity to my self to break out of that dreaded Series of Fear.
