It is never pleasant to feel anxious or distressed for any reason. However, there are several people who are diagnosed with anxiety disorders as they are very prevalent today. Mental health professionals are helping people overcome hurdles such as panic attacks, severe worry, social anxiety and other specific phobias. I think that anxiety is an emotion that everyone experiences at one time or another in their life. Anxiety can have a negative effect on an individual if it interferes with one’s daily routine and keeps them from doing what they normally do. The reading by Borkovec & Romer resonated with me because I believe I have anxiety disorder although I have not been officially diagnosed yet. I tend to worry a lot about things that …show more content…
In the movie, the character Melvin exhibits many signs of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He is a writer who must have been through many trials and tribulations as he was a compulsive writer and was writing his sixty-sixth book. His compulsions are exhibited by the fact that he must eat at a certain restaurant each day, must sit in a certain booth, and must be served by a certain waitress. When he is walking into his apartment, he locks and unlocks the door repeatedly, switches on and off lights several times as well. Also, many of the things Jack does, from the way he walks around, to the way he talks and thinks, make his life more difficult. He also has a difficult time with maintaining relationships and alienates nearly everyone because of his behavior. It makes it difficult for Melvin to find happiness because he has a difficult time maintaining three relationships: Simon is homosexual and Melvin dislikes his lifestyle, a dog who he dislikes as well and a woman who he has difficulty maintaining a relationship with. I feel that Melvin’s ritualistic behaviors caused problems in his interpersonal and professional life as you can see the toll it takes in his …show more content…
I do believe that OCD can be associated with trauma and if there are unresolved issues of trauma, it can increase the symptoms of OCD. I also believe that the best treatment for this disorder would be a combination of medication with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). CBT teaches people different ways of thinking which will change their behavior and reactions to situations. This will help an individual feel less anxious or fearful without having obsessive thoughts or acting
Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety defined means “distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune” defined by Dictionary.com. In the epic poem of Beowulf, one could say that the townspeople had anxiety when it came to Grendel because they feared what he could do to them.
When Jack arrived at the Overlook hotel it was evident that he had suffered from substance abuse in the past. Jack had once been a heavy alcoholic. This addiction had caused him to inflict violence upon his child in a violent rage. During this rage he snatched his son up by the arm and broke it. Although it is not clear, this could have been a sign that he was manic depressant. His mania could have been storms of violent rage instead of a constant high. In the beginning of the movie the viewer learns that Jack is a writer. This “creative” career” also has an important impact on his depression because his career can be up or down. In many cases, people who have careers in the arts such as writing, art, or acting can experience times of insecurity, which can induce a depressive state. This new change allowed Jack to start fresh and enable him to write with no distractions.
Melvin is most likely to be diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, due to the fact that he meets all of the DSM-5 criteria for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. He displays obsessions, which are defined by recurrent, intrusive, persistent, uncontrollable thoughts, urges or images (Kring, Johnson, Davison & ...
Part of Melvin’s OCD is being germaphobic. Melvin always wore gloves and avoided contact with other people or animals. When he washed his hands, Melvin used a brand new bar of soap for each time he lathered his hands. Melvin would also lock the door five times every time he came home to make sure it was locked. Generalized Anxiety Disorder, also known as (GAD) is one of the several types of anxiety disorders. GAD according to our textbook (Lahey) is an uneasy sense of general tension and apprehension for no apparent reason that makes the individual highly uncomfortable because of its prolonged presence. GAD is much more than the normal anxiety people experience day to day. Without provoking, it is chronic and exaggerated worry and tension. This disorder can involve anticipating disaster, often worrying excessively about health, money, family or work. Sometimes, though, just the thought of getting through the day brings anxiety.
3.3% of Americans are diagnosed with Antisocial Personality disorder. It’s 70% more common in males than females and is seen greatly in Daisy only ate her father’s rotisserie chicken and would organize strips of chicken. When she was done she’d put the chicken bones under her bed. This shows she has OCD because she had taste aversions toward foods that were not her father’s chicken, and compulsively organized and kept the chicken. She also had anxiety as she was supposed to be taking valium which is for controlling anxiety.
Anxiety is a feeling of tension associated with a sense of threat of danger when the source of the danger is not known. In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. Everyday that I can think of I have some kind of anxiety though out that day. Anxiety warns us and enables us to get ready for the ‘fight or flight’ response. However, heightened anxiety is emotionally painful. It disrupts a person's daily functioning.
Alice Park’s article in TIME Magazine, entitled “The Two Faces of Anxiety”, outlines the key positive and negative effects anxiety can have on both the individual and humanity as a whole. Because of the steady increase in diagnoses of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and similar mental illnesses, evaluating the origins of anxiety as well as its effects are crucial steps for developing both medical treatments and alternative methods of coping with the disorder. While many of the 40 million American adults suffering from anxiety believe that eliminating the feeling altogether is ideal, they fail to consider what psychologists have mounds of empirical evidence in support of: anxiety is not inherently adverse, and can, in many cases, be advantageous. Anxiety is generally understood to be a biological process in which specific symptoms, such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, manifest as a response to stressful scenarios. In these potentially-fatal situations, the fight-or-flight response is an evolutionary reaction developed to prevent species from engaging in behavior that could result in extreme negative consequences, while also preparing them for possible conflict. Overall, this response is a constructive adaptation, but an issue arises when individuals face stressful, albeit non-fatal, situations. The body still experiences the same symptoms despite the absence of any “real” danger, and the person suffering from the anxiety feels as though he or she has little control over the behaviors brought on by the condition. Triggered by both genetic and environmental factors, there appears to be a wide variation in the severity of anxiety as well as what treatment methods are effective for each individual. However, many psychologists ...
Obsessive compulsive disorder is believed to be linked to other disorders and disabilities. The symptoms cause a lot of stress and anxiety and it could lead to depression. OCD can develop over time or be something one is born with. Many people suffer from this disorder but there are different ways to treat the symptoms such as cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. OCD is a very common yet serious disorder that does not seem significant to those who do not have it but it is not something that should ever be ignored.
Bearing in mind that an anxiety response is a result of various factors, there are different types of anxiety disorders. The most common type of anxiety disorders as described as specific phobias, social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder (PD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) (2016), specific phobias affect about 19 million adults in the U.S, while SAD affects 15 million, PD affects 6 million, GAD affects about 6.8 million, OCD affects about 2.2 million and PTSD affects 7.7 million adults respectively. Considering that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S, yet only about one-third of those suffering receive treatment (ADAA, 2016).
The main character, Melvin, was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and showed several signs and symptoms of the disorder. The mere-exposure effect explained the unlikely attraction between Melvin and Carol, as well as Verdell’s preference for Melvin. Finally, the frustration-aggression principle, explains why characters in the film became upset when kept from reaching their goals. Overall, the film was successful in demonstrating these psychological principles and connecting them to realistic examples found outside of a
Anxiety is a term for several disorders that causes the body to feel fear, nervousness, apprehension, and worrying, "Anxiety is a word we use for some types of fear that are consequently to do with the thought of a threat or something going wrong in the future, rather than right now" (Mental Health Foundation). Many people suffer from anxiety every day, consequently most people can not pinpoint what exactly their anxiety originates from. No one likes to experience stress and anxiety, but it is just a phase of life that most humans have to overcome and become stronger. Anxiety disorders are one of the most inferior mental illnesses that affects teens and adults in the United States. Anxiety negatively affects the body and
Leahy, R. L. (2008, April 30). How Big a Problem is Anxiety?. Psychology Today: Health, Help,
What causes OCD? It was thought in the past that OCD was caused by some kind of biological or psychological vulnerability. (Durand and Barlow 2000.) Psychologists are now starting to lean towards the growing evidence that OCD represents abnormal functioning of brain circuitry, probably involving a part of the brain called the striatum. (NIMH 2000.) OCD is not caused by family problems or attitudes learned in childhood or by a belief that certain thoughts are dangerous and unacceptable. Doctors have been experimenting with clients that have OCD and clients that don't have it. They have been using positron emission tomography (PET) to compare people with and without OCD. Clients...
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. Every person experiences some form of anxiety in his or her lifetime. Anxiety helps us deal with tense situations like using our flight or fight reaction, study harder for an exam, or keep focus on important deadlines. Anxiety can be useful until it gets to the point of interfering with everyday life. Some people explain it as not being able to shut the anxiety off. When anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it becomes a disabling disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). Each year, anxiety disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). There are five major Anxiety Disorders they include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Phobias.
