Nwoye’s Journey Through Self-Discovery
“Although Nwoye had been attracted to the new faith from the very first day, he kept it a secret. He dared not go too near the missionaries for fear of his father.” (112) Self-discovery was a big thing for Nwoye. Nwoye’s sense of identity was majorly impacted by the introduction of Western ideas into the Ibo culture. Nwoye was one of the ones who took in the new Western ideas. He took to them very well and loved the idea of a different life. Nwoye went through challenges on his journey through self-discovery including his father, being forced to move to another village for seven years, and losing Ikemefuna.
One of Nwoye’s biggest challenges on his road to self-discovery was his father. Okonkwo did
not agree with Nwoye’s choice to become a missionary and take in the new Western ideas. Okonkwo did not want the missionaries to take over the Ibo culture and change the way things were. He enjoyed life as it was. He did not want nor welcome change. Okonkwo wanted to stick with the roots of the Ibo culture. He did not agree with his son's decision one bit. Nwoye and Okonkwo did not have the closest relationship. They grew farther apart with the loss of Ikemefuna. Okonkwo did not like certain traits about Nwoye. He compared his son to his father, whom he believed was a coward, quite often. Because of these things and differences, Okonkwo made it more difficult for Nwoye on his journey to self-discovery. Another obstacle in Nwoye finding his true colors was that of him having to move to another village for seven years because of his father being exiled. During the years of exile, the missionaries invaded several villages, but had yet to come to the one they were currently living in, Mbanta. When Nwoye found out about the missionaries, he had to hide the fact that he was intrigued. When Okonkwo and Nwoye got into an argument, Nwoye left. When he left he returned to his home village. When he got there he found the missionaries, and later became one himself. For Nwoye, he was never happy, especially when his whole family had to move, creating an obstacle in the way of his journey to discovery. The final obstacle in the way of Nwoye finding his path for self-discovery is the loss of Ikemefuna. Nwoye and Ikemefuna had become close over the years. When Okonkwo returned that night, he knew something was wrong. He had a gut feeling that Ikemefuna had been killed and that his father was more than likely the one who killed him. Nwoye was never the same after that. Neither was his relationship with his father. Nwoye and Okonkwo never really had a close bond, but the loss of Ikemefuna drove Nwoye even farther away. This had a big impact on Nwoye’s road to finding out who he is, but was also a major obstacle. In conclusion, the impact Western Ideas had on Nwoye was major. Things changed for him when he found the Western ideas and he was never the same. They helped him find out who he truly was and he was able to live a happier life. Nwoye took in the ideas and adapted to them very well. The introduction of Western ideas into the Ibo culture helped Nwoye on his road to self-discovery.
For members of the Ibo tribe, being submissive and respectful to your elders and culture is the only accepted way to live, yet the son of one of the greatest men in Umuofia seems to defy this ideal. Nwoye, the son of Okonkwo, one of the most majestic warriors and farmers in their small village, has never really been attracted to the manly nature and attitudes expected of him. Never being fond of blood and fighting and not wanting to participate in any of the hard work in the household has left Nwoye with a more feminine personality. Not only does he reject the ideas of the Ibo culture, he also accepts those of a white man and lives life like a Westerner. In Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart, Nwoye defies traditional Ibo values by emphasizing the importance of not killing Ikemefuna, highlighting the fact that it is acceptable to convert to Christianity, and not living up to be the manly hero his dad want him to be.

His family was banished for their tribe and was sent way to Okonkwo’s mother lands tribe for a crime Okonkwo did not mean to commit but banished regardless. The missionaries show up and they begin to win some of the Ibo people with their new all-powerful God. Eventualy some missionaries show up to the tribe that they now reside in and tell the story of the father the son and the Holy Spirit. Ex. Nwoye’s sense of identity made him think of becoming his true self. Nwoye started out in the novel as a normal ibo boy obeying his family and doing everything in the ibo culture, but the cultural collision of the British colonists and Ibo people affected him to the point of where he wanted to be just like them, abandoning his native customs. The reasons for his change in their sense of identity included him not wanting to be anything like his father. He saw how their religion was better than the ibo one, and he doesn’t fit in at home.The western people ideas and customs influenced Nwoye to become himself and let him feel free to do what he wants.
In the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, Nwoye is Okonkwo’s eldest son who is a feminine in the eyes of his father while being a lackadaisical boy just like Unoka was during his lifetime. As a child, Nwoye was often criticized by his father for not being a manly person. Eventually, Ikemefuna comes to fill the void of a manly person and afterwards, Nwoye decided to emulate Ikemefuna as a way to show to his father that he is not a feminine but instead he is transitioning into a manly person. On the other hand after the murder of Ikemefuna, Nwoye decides to distance himself from his father and seems to lose the respect he once had towards his father. Without Ikemefuna’s influence, Nwoye decides to convert back to his gentle nature which basically leads to Okonkwo to view his son as a disappointment and feminine person. Later on in the novel, Nwoye decides to not forgive his father for his betrayal in killing Ikemefuna which ultimately leads to Nwoye to convert into Christianity as a way to show his father that he did a scandalous thing that would never be forgiven.
Before British Colonization Nwoye was dedicated to his father Okonkwo until he killed Ikemefuna. Nwoye did everything Okonkwo asked of him because he was scared of the consequences he would suffer if he did not listen or respect Okonkwo. Once Okonkwo murdered Ikemefuna, Nwoye became afraid of him. Ikemefuna was the closest thing Nwoye had as a brother, taking that away from Nwoye made him lose respect for Okonkwo. “Then something had given way inside him. Okonkwo’s fear leads him to treat members of his family harshly, in particular his son, Nwoye. Okonkwo often wonders how he, a man of great strength and work ethic, could have had a son who was “degenerate and effeminate” (133). Okonkwo thought that, "No matter how prosperous a man was, if he was unable to rule his women and his children (and especially his women) he was not really a man" (45).
Okonkwo had dreams, some of his dreams were fulfilled while others weren’t. Okonkwo's dreams were to be successful and better than his father which happened because he was one of the greatest, well known and respected men in the tribe of Umuofia. His other dream was for his son Nwoye to be just like him which didn’t happen since Nwoye was not happy with the way he was being treated and he went and joined the white men church in spite of his father.
Analyzing this story, it can be perceived that Nwoye was estranged from the folklore and creed of the
Nwoye – In the eyes of Okonkwo, his oldest son, Nwoye, is weak and lazy from an early age. He dislikes his father because he beats him so often to make him more masculine. After the death of Ikemefuna, Nwoye becomes very depressed and later converts to the Christian faith, which makes Okonkwo disown him.
Unfortunately, everything is not perfect. His son, Nwoye, seems not to be showing the characteristics of a real man. He prefers to stay with his mother, listening to women's stories, than to listen to his father's tales of battle and victory. Nwoye grows tired of his father and is called by the Christian faith and converts. Nwoye’s internal struggle with himself between change and tradition ultimately led him to convert against his father’s wishes. Okonkwo is extremely resistant to change, so he does everything in his power to prevent his family from converting; “‘If you turn against me when I am dead I will visit you and break your neck’” (Achebe 105). Okonkwo uses fear to keep his other children from the Igbo culture.

Nwoye, whom is Okonkwo’s son, leaves to follow the Christians. Resulting from this, Okonkwo perceives him as weak, because he disobeyed the male dominant Igbo culture. In an academic article by Biodun, he touches on the subject of male dominance playing a part upon Okonkwo finding his son feminine, “We can indeed say that within the gendered scale of valuations and representations by which Okonkwo seeks to establish the greatest possibles distance between himself and his father’s “effeminacy,” his son Nwoye is “feminized”: he refuses Okonkwo’s interpellative call to be a “man” contemptuous of “female” attributes” (Jeyifo 233). Since the the Igbo community is very male dominated, when Nwoye leaves to join the Christians, it is perceived to be a feminist choice. This is also confirmed in the book Things Fall Apart, “A sudden fury rose within him and he felt a strong desire to take up his machete, go to the church and wipe out the entire vile and miscreant gang. But on further thought he told himself that Nwoye was not worth fighting for” (Achebe 152).
