In the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, Nwoye is Okonkwo’s eldest son who is a feminine in the eyes of his father while being a lackadaisical boy just like Unoka was during his lifetime. As a child, Nwoye was often criticized by his father for not being a manly person. Eventually, Ikemefuna comes to fill the void of a manly person and afterwards, Nwoye decided to emulate Ikemefuna as a way to show to his father that he is not a feminine but instead he is transitioning into a manly person. On the other hand after the murder of Ikemefuna, Nwoye decides to distance himself from his father and seems to lose the respect he once had towards his father. Without Ikemefuna’s influence, Nwoye decides to convert back to his gentle nature which basically leads to Okonkwo to view his son as a disappointment and feminine person. Later on in the novel, Nwoye decides to not forgive his father for his betrayal in killing Ikemefuna which ultimately leads to Nwoye to convert into Christianity as a way to show his father that he did a scandalous thing that would never be forgiven.

Chinua Achebe wrote this novel from the perspective of Okonkwo, but this passage in particular is more from Nwoye’s point of view and is told through a third person omniscient narrator. It takes place in the middle of a larger topic involving the manliness of Nwoye and Ikemefuna, and is located in paragraphs three and four of chapter seven, in part one. He was in great conflict with the ideas of the white men and the missionaries. Okonkwo saw that their beliefs had not only changed the daily life of the Ibo, but it also changed the people themselves: “He mourned for the warlike men of Umuofia, who had so unaccountably become soft like women” (Achebe 183). The author uses strong diction to compare the men before and after colonization. This quote also portrays Okonkwo’s opinion towards the cultural collision. He values strength and masculinity immensely because of his fear of appearing weak like his father Unoka. When he describes that the men of Umuofia changed to be soft like women, this shows how much he dishonors the Western ideas and how it has taken over the village. He made an attempt to get rid of the Western influence by urging the tribe to fight like men, but they refuse to. He was determined and still attempted to furthermore encourage the people of Umuofia to revolt against the new culture. He realizes that his attempts to return the village back to the way it was before were futile. He knew that Christianity was tearing his people apart, but knew he was incapable of making change to help his people. In Things Fall Apart, white Christians come into Africa trying to convince the natives to convert to Christianity. Okonkwo’s son Nwoye uses double consciousness when he wants to convert, because he is afraid of what his father might say. When the Christians arrive, the narrator says “Nwoye had been attracted to the new faith from the very first day, he kept it secret. He dared not go too near the missionaries for fear of his father” (149). Even though Nwoye was interested in the new religion, the double consciousness of his father stopped him from doing what he actually wanted. Nwoye thought about Okonkwo whenever he thought about converting because of the rage and disappointment he saw in his earlier life. Nwoye did not want to disappoint his father therefore believing that this new religion was the wrong choice despite what he felt in his heart.
“He wanted Nwoye to grow into a tough young man capable of ruling his father’s household when he was dead and gone to join the ancestors. He wanted him to be a prosperous man, having enough in his barn to feed the ancestors with regular sacrifices.” (Achebe 53). In Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart, it demonstrates how a person can change by the revealing of a new culture and how things can actually fall apart with an introduction of new ways. In the novel, Nwoye goes through a great deal of change while developing to the new culture.
Two passages from the story Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, provide the reader with a more profound understanding of Okonkwo, and his son Nwoye. The two do not have a good relationship and it becomes worse as the story progresses. Throughout the book the two become increasingly distant and it is apparent that Okonkwo is very disappointed in his son. After the death of Ikemefuna, Nwoye begins to question many aspects of his life, especially religion. As the Christian missionaries spend more time with the members of the village, Nwoye becomes interested in this new religion. The first passage I have chosen discusses Nwoye’s feelings about Christianity.
Nwoye, whom is Okonkwo’s son, leaves to follow the Christians. Resulting from this, Okonkwo perceives him as weak, because he disobeyed the male dominant Igbo culture. In an academic article by Biodun, he touches on the subject of male dominance playing a part upon Okonkwo finding his son feminine, “We can indeed say that within the gendered scale of valuations and representations by which Okonkwo seeks to establish the greatest possibles distance between himself and his father’s “effeminacy,” his son Nwoye is “feminized”: he refuses Okonkwo’s interpellative call to be a “man” contemptuous of “female” attributes” (Jeyifo 233). Since the the Igbo community is very male dominated, when Nwoye leaves to join the Christians, it is perceived to be a feminist choice. This is also confirmed in the book Things Fall Apart, “A sudden fury rose within him and he felt a strong desire to take up his machete, go to the church and wipe out the entire vile and miscreant gang. But on further thought he told himself that Nwoye was not worth fighting for” (Achebe 152). Chinua Achebe narrates Okonkwo realizing that his son is not worth fighting for, because Nwoye betrayed the Igbo village, making him the equivalent of a woman. Nwoye – In the eyes of Okonkwo, his oldest son, Nwoye, is weak and lazy from an early age. He dislikes his father because he beats him so often to make him more masculine. After the death of Ikemefuna, Nwoye becomes very depressed and later converts to the Christian faith, which makes Okonkwo disown him.
This crime from Okonkwo left him away from his homeland for seven years, and during his escape, his old culture would soon be evolved. This unintentional action also played a domino effect, first moving his family away and having his home destroyed, then having his son, Nwoye turn back on him and become a missionary in Umuofia joining the white culture. Achebe describes how Nwoye declines Okonkwo being his father towards Obierika who is doing favors for the family (144). Hearing this, his father seems to not be harmed and is disappointed in his son. These missionaries began assembling into Umuofia, convincing the clansmen that there is only one God, and He is the creator of everything unlike what the clansmen had believed. They had a god for everything, but they now were being persuaded. Hearing this, Okonkwo is in shock and believes that the only way to solve the issue is to chase the men out of the village some way (Achebe 146). Nwoye is attracted to the new religion but has yet to reveal it to his father for fear of him. When Okonkwo heard the news, he is infuriated with anger. “… sprang to his feet and gripped him by the neck”
In the book, Okonkwo thinks that his son, Nwoye, is lazy. “To react, Okonkwo often “sought to correct him by constant nagging and beating” (Achebe 11). With Okonkwo's beating Nwoye it shows he doesn't care what happens to him as long as he's doesn't end up like his dad: lazy. NOt caring shows that they have a bad relationship. Good relations show that people care and someone can tell people anything. Okonkwo and Nwoye don’t have that. This is shown when Nwoye grows up and joins the Christians. Okonkwo does not like this, so Nwoye is kind of disowned. WHen asked about his dad, he says, “‘I don't know. He is not my father’, said Nwoye unhappily” ( Achebe 124). Okonkwo, Nwoye father has disowned him because he joined the christians and is very unhappy about that. At first he is shy and timid among his new family. But as time passed, Ikemefuna grows stronger and stronger. Okonkwo becomes fond of Ikemefuna, so much that he sees him as the perfect son. He is a great leader, intelligent, courageous, strong minded; everything that Okonkwo desires for in a son. Also as time goes on, Nwoye and Ikemefuna’s bond strengthens. This coincided with Nwoye developing more into a manly figure like his older brother as “nothing pleased Nwoye now more than to be sent for by his mother or another of his father’s wives to do one of the difficult and masculine tasks at home, like splitting wood, or pounding food. So all is looking well between Nwoye and Ikemefuna until the day the brotherly bond brakes when Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna. Nwoye’s internal struggle with himself between change and tradition ultimately led him to convert against his father’s wishes. Okonkwo is extremely resistant to change, so he does everything in his power to prevent his family from converting; “‘If you turn against me when I am dead I will visit you and break your neck’” (Achebe 105). Okonkwo uses fear to keep his other children from the Igbo culture.
Okonkwo sees his father’s gentleness as a feminine trait. He works hard to be as masculine as possible so that he will be the opposite of his father and overcome the shame his father brought to his family. Okonkwo deals with this struggle throughout the entire book, hiding the intense fear of weakness behind a masculine façade (Nnoromele 149). In order to appear masculine, he is often violent. In his desire to be judged by his own worth and not by the worth of his effeminate father, Okonkwo participates in the killing of a boy he sees as a son, even though his friends and other respected tribe members advise him against it. (Hoegberg 71). Even after the killing of Ikamefuna, Okonkwo hides his feelings of sadness because the emotions are feminine to him. He goes so far as to ask himself, “when did you become a shivering old woman” (Achebe 65), while he is inwardly grieving. The dramatic irony of the secret fears that Okonkwo has will open the reader’s eyes to how important gender identity is to him. This theme is also presented among Okonkwo’s children. He sees his oldest son, Nwoye, as feminine because he does not like to work as hard as his father (Stratton 29). When Nwoye eventually joins the Christian church, Okonkwo sees him as even more feminine. On the other hand, Okonkwo’s
