With numbers as high as 3.5 million, infertility is affecting more couples than some may realize and the smaller family size isn’t the only thing causing frustration within these couples (Daniluk, 2001). Along with many tears and sleepless nights, infertility can bring about various types of health issues, copious amounts of stress, financial problems, and could eventually lead to divorce. Although there aren’t many reports claiming that infertility is on the rise, it is still a dispute and will likely be a common wound within some marriages that therapists will address.
What is infertility?
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) describes infertility as the result of a disease (an interruption, cessation, or disorder of body functions, systems, or organs) of the male or female reproductive tract which prevents the conception of a child or the ability to carry a pregnancy. Unless things such as medical history or physical symptoms are found, it is suggested to not have an infertility evaluation for about 12 months of having unprotected intercourse with failure to conceive (American Society for Reproductive Medicine, n.d.). One in eight American couples will experience infertility and over 1.1 million women will undergo fertility treatments in a given year.

According to the Mayo clinic, 1/3 of infertility is on the man’s side, 1/3 is female infertility and 1/3 of infertility is caused by both the female and the male (Harms, 2011). With this information we understand that it can occur equally with men, women or even
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.1 million married couples experience troubles with infertility. The cause of the infertility is a male factor one third of the instances, female another third, ten percent of the cause is a combination of both male and female factors and the remaining twenty percent is not apparent. For many years, infertile couples have had difficulty facing the reality that they can not have children. According to Nidus Information Services Incorporated, 6.2 million women in the United States are infertile. This problem leads to many options. A few options have been used for a long period of time: the couple could adopt a child or keep trying to have a child themselves. For those couples that want to have their own children, there are new options arising. In vetro fertilization is an option that gives couples the chance to have a doctor combine the male's sperm and the woman's eggs in a petri dish and implant them into the woman's womb after the artificial conception. This may result in multiple pregnancies - more than five in some cases. This does not only occur in implantation, however. Many times the patient's doctor will ask her to consider selective reduction: aborting a few fetuses to save the ones she can. In a case of multiple pregnancy, selective reduction should be considered an option.
Vasectomy is a form of birth control for men that is meant to be permanent. During vasectomy, a health care provider closes or blocks the tubes that carry sperm. When the tubes are closed, sperm cannot leave a man's body and cause pregnancy. They pass through two tubes called the vasa deferentia to other glands and mix with seminal fluids to form semen. Vasectomy blocks each vas deferens and keeps sperm out of the seminal fluid. The sperm are absorbed by the body instead of being ejaculated. Without sperm, your cum cannot cause pregnancy. Effectiveness is an important and common concern when choosing a birth control method. Vasectomy is the most effective birth control for men. It is nearly 100 percent effective.
For Elizabeth and her husband Paul, the journey to building a family through IUI at Texas Fertility Center started after a pregnancy loss. According to Elizabeth, “In February of 2010, we lost our first baby. The pregnancy was a surprise because we weren’t trying, but we were excited.” When the couple

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help those who want children but struggle with infertility. The process consists of extracting eggs from a woman and collecting a man’s sperm sample then manually combining them in a lab dish. Once the embryo(s) are created they are transferred to a woman’s uterus. IVF is commonly used in woman who cannot conceive on their own due to different reasonings. “These include but are not limited to blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, woman with ovulation disorders, genetic disorders, woman who have had their fallopian tubes removed and unexplained infertility.” (American Pregnancy)

Giving thanks to the new improvements in fertility treatments, American women are becoming mothers later than ever lately. Therefore, the number of women having their first child are between the ages of 40 and 44 has increased more than fourfold from 1985 through 2012, with the number of such births reaching 109,579 in 2012, according to the centers for disease control and prevention (O’Brien,2014). Women are more likely to conceive during their 20s, the cut off age for trying to conceive is 37. There should be a point where doctors tell you it’s time to stop treatments(cycles), but instead clinics will try to upsell you. What we as women do not realize is the high cost, the process, and the outcome of these fertility treatments. Sadly couples put so much into a process, and can come out with a disappointing outcome. So I myself do not stand by fertility treatments, these things can cause too much emotional distress.
Cross culturally fertility and childbearing are a major concern due to the significance of passing on heritage, family names, and values to the next generation. Additionally, in many cultures the children are responsible for the care of their parents when they become elderly. Infertility is a universal concern in both Western and developing countries. It is estimated that up to 168 million people across the globe are affected with infertility. The bulk of these cases reside within developing countries (Vayena & Rowe, 2002). When couples are having trouble conceiving a child it is a source of distress for both partners (Helman, 2007, p. 176). This distress can be manifested in a variety of ways that adversely affect the family structure.
We have all heard stories of a friend or family member trying to conceive but failing at it for unknown reasons. They spend years, thousands of dollars and many tears only to still not conceive. Then, the woman is finally given the diagnosis of endometriosis. Based on statistical evidence and studies endometriosis is the leading cause of infertility in woman of reproductive age. Not only is it a devastating diagnosis but also an extremely hard disease to diagnosis. At times getting misdiagnosed and ignored by medical professionals. Leading to more years of pain for the woman suffering from a very debilitating disease.
Before trying to conceive a child, it is unlikely to know if one is fertile. Therefore, the potential parents would try on their own for months before referring to a fertility clinic. If the results state the father is infertile and the mother’s egg are viable, then it threatens his masculinity. Artificial insemination is one of the wife’s best option to conceive a child while

By using the results obtained from this study counselors can determine how to best help clients with various types of infertility issues. As the results of the study revealed the etiology of the infertility could be correlated with the type of stress the client experiences.
