INTRODUCTION: MEDICAL DEFINITION OF INFERTITLITY A couple is said to be suffering from infertility, if they have been having unprotected sex for one year, or in some cases six months; without the woman conceiving. According to medical experts, recurrent miscarriage is also categorized as infertility (www.webmd.com). For the purposes of this research, the focus will be on infertility among women of childbearing age. The first part focuses on signs and symptoms; and contributing factors. The second part outlines conventional medical approach to treating infertility. The third part outlines the foods to avoid, while the final part outlines the food that can heal infertility. SIGNS/SYMPTOMS The main symptom of infertility is not getting pregnant. However, in some cases a woman may have irregular or absent menstrual periods. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS OF INFERTILITY IN WOMEN  Ovulation disorder: This is due to hormonal imbalance which prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. Other factors include failure to produce mature egg, malfunction of the hypothalamus, malfunction of the pituitary gland, scarred ovaries, premature menopause, and follicle problems (www.stanford.edu)  Uterine/Cervical abnormalities: These include the cervix or cervical mucus or abnormalities in the shape or cavity of the uterus. These are mostly caused by benign tumors known as fibroids. Fibroids may cause infertility by blocking the fallopian tubes or interfering with implantation of the fertilized egg  Fallopian tube damage or blockage: This is as a result of inflammation of the fallopian tube. This can result from pelvic inflammatory disease, usually caused by sexually transmitted infection, endometriosis or adhesion. Vitamin C improves hormone levels and increases fertility in women with luteal phase defect. Vitamin c is abundant in plants, and fruits including red peppers, broccoli, cranberries, cabbage, tomatoes and citrus fruit  Eat foods that are rich in folic acid: Folic acid is one of the best known vitamins necessary for pregnancy. This vitamin helps prevent neural tube defects as well as congenital heart defect, cleft lips, limb defects and urinary anomalies in developing fetuses. Deficiency may also increase the homocysteine level in the blood, which can lead to spontaneous abortion and other pregnancy complications.
