Indie Games: Then and Now Indie games. They are becoming more and more popular, not only because of the newer developments of technology, but also because of their uniqueness and creativity in their fully-developed games. Independent games have become more popular now since 2012, due to the opportunities supported by Apple, Microsoft, and Sony. It is a shame, though, because indie games actually began way back in the 1950s, back when no major publishers such as Activision, Ubisoft, Rockstar, and EA. They slowly had to get their fame. First of all, what is indie gaming? Indie games are games that are made by small teams of 1 or more, hence the name indie, which is short for independent. These small teams do not have a major publisher to publish their games, so instead they self-publish their games online through the App Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, or the PlayStation Store. In fact, some of the biggest developers such as id and Epic were once independent game developers (Griliopoulos). This genre of gaming did not become popular until the second half of the 2000s (Buzzle), and was not re-introduced until the 1990s when PC gaming was growing in popularity (Pathetic Reviews). At around the time of the 90s, the internet was introduced, and people used the internet. The independent studios thought that even though they were a small team, they could still make games that could change the video game industry. Unfortunately, the internet was not as popular as it is today, so indie developers lost their chance (Pathetic Reviews). Why do they exist, then? Well, thanks to the later developments of newer technology, independent studios are able to create and design their games (Buzzle). Also, indie studios are able to self-publish their g... ... middle of paper ... ...ean For Their Future?." ManaTank. N.p., 08 Sep 2012. Web. 3 Dec 2013. . • Boyette, Jonah. During the 1990’s the video games were constantly changing.this decade saw tons of innovations in the gaming industry. The creation of 32-bit games and 3D games dominated the virtual world: Contra, Battletoads, Mortal Kombat, etc. Video game genres developed and branched out, creating some of the popular genres in video games today, such Role-playing games(RPGs),
An examination of videogames in popular culture is a complicated one. There is a large debate as to what is the very first video game. The supposed earliest known video game was created by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann on a cathode ray tube in 1947. The game was a missile simulator similar to radar displays from World War II, and overlaid sheets of paper were used for targets since graphics were unknown at this time. On May 5, 1951, the NIMROD computer was presented in Britain. It used a panel of lights for its display and was used to play a game called “NIM”. Later, in 1952, Alexander S. Douglas made the first compu...
In pages 20-24 of Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, I agree that there are many different video games. For me, I am a fan of single-player games with story modes because I can play by myself and go at a pace that suits me. However, I enjoy playing online multiplayer when I have friends I can play with because it is fun interacting with friends and doing stuff together. I play on a console or my computer, but I have played on my phone and a hand-held device. I have not played a board game or card game in a while, but I would play it if the opportunity presents itself. The video games genres I play are sports, action, and adventure. I agree with Jane McGonigal that video games share four defining traits,

Key Changes in the Video Game Industry The first wave of home video games was launched nearly 30 years ago. By the early 1980s, this electronic entertainment medium had emerged as a cultural phenomenon, thanks to classics such as Asteroids, Centipede, Donkey Kong, and Pac-Man. The world of video games has, of course, changed drastically since then. For starters, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony are now the key players in the console industry, having replaced Atari, Coleco, and Mattel for those top spots. Advances in technology are making game worlds more realistic and interactive than ever before.
Instead of the franchises popularity having a positive impact, overtime, it infected the gaming market along with it’s consumers and developers such as Microsoft Game Studios and EA. It has become an aggrandized cancer on the face of video games everywhere, destroying franchises a...

In society’s current era of technological advancement, video games have gone a long way since they were first created. Video games in the twenty-first century are no longer just toys or junk in the lifestyles of the youth. They have become innovative inventions that not only entertain its users, but also help aid the people in both the academic field and in jobs. The influences that video games bring about in the culture of the youth today are, in fact, not the negative influences that most people think. Video games are actually this generation’s new medium for educating the youth. The information they learn are also mostly positive and useful things that they may apply in their future lives (Prensky 4). In a generation that revolves around technology and connectivity, developers and educators have already been able to produce fun and interesting games that can teach and train people. Video game developers and educators should continue to collaborate in order to create more positive, educational, and appealing games.
People suspect the growth of this competitive scene is due to the gambling aspect of gaming. In 1994, the Kiplinger Washington Letter stated, “Gambling will be the fastest growing industry of the Nineties.” This statement is very true and applies to competitive gaming as well. As soon as you enter the world of competitive gaming, it's nearly impossible to leave. The industry of competitive video gaming has been up and coming, but now it is at it's peek. The world around us is changing every day, similar to the world of competitive sports, but the world of competitive gaming is here to stay.
