I believe that it’s not fair for single mothers to get paid less, when some of them are the back bones of this country. Currently the minimum wage, in the United States, is set to 8$ per hour. Women in general are only paid 77%, so it is appropriate to assume that through mathematics, women get a wage as high as $6.16. African-American women only get paid 64% of every dollar a man makes. If the minimum wage is only $8 an hour, we find out that African-American women only get a maximum wage of $5.12 an hour. Income inequality is not fair to the mothers who have kids to raise by themselves. Single mothers have no spouse or any other fixed income to help. 4.1million households in the world are single mother households, and out of that 4.1million, 72 percent of all black children in the world are raised in single mother households. The payment inequality has a huge effect on single mothers, especially African-American women.
This social issue goes along with women’s equality and women’s suffrage. “In 1963 women only made 59% of what a man made, in the early 1960’s job advertisement was listed by sex” (“Everything You Need to Know about the Equal Pay Act” 3) Yet citizens of the U.S. and other countries still get paid less because of gender, age, and ethnicity. When it comes to being discriminated against weather it is by age, gender, ethnicity or any reason it’s wrong. Single parent homes provide clear communication between the parent and the child. Communication is something that has to be developed between one person to the other person. It really helps, because it gets children use to being told no. Also it gets children to think of other ways to compromise using their mouths instead of resulting to violence. It allows for a clear understanding between two people. In Publisher Carl E. Pickhardt, PhD’s article “Why Single Parents Can Parent Adolescents Well” he writes, “With much t talk about and less time to talk, busyness causes single parents to speak directly and to the point, not hesitating to speak up when difficult issues need to be addressed, and treating conflict not as a challenge to their authority, but as a talking point.” (Pickhardt 6).
The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. Countless arguments have promoted that wage inequality has changed and that everyone finally receives an equal amount of pay. “For women of color, the gap is largest of all: In 2006, black and Hispanic women earned 86 and 87 cents on the white man’s dollar, respectively,” (Mcswane 2). If a woman is lucky enough she will get an equal pay compared to a man doing the same job. But it is challenging for a woman of a minority background to achieve this. Close to 60% of children in the united states, who are living in a single mother family are impoverished. However, only 11% of two parent families are in poverty. This is very important because there are close to approximately 10,000,000 single mother families in the united states, and if 60% of those are in poverty, then close to 6,000,000 families are in poverty in the U.S. because they have a single mother. This is an issue because that is a lot of people living in poverty. If women don't get paid enough because of their lower paying jobs and the wage gap, then it is almost impossible to raise children while being a single mother. Also, many parents take time off of their work to take care of their children. Single parents usually have to take more time off of their work to take care of their child. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). He or she is to blame for the 40% income wage difference that exists in full time and part time workers. Women in society are poor and living in poverty because they are discriminated against in the workplace. They often are not offered the same positions that a male figure may be offered, therefore, they have to work for less while trying to provide for their children if they happen to not be married. This discrimination comes from people believing that women are not able to complete a job with the same skill that a male figure could. A single parent household is a house with only one parent and one or multiple children. Single parent households are becoming very common in all racial and ethnic groups because it is no longer required for people to be married before they have children. Most households only have one parent because of divorce, never being married, separated, widowed, or because of business. The most common are, separation, divorce and just simply never being married. In these cases it is usually the mother who is the single parent. It is not too often that you see a father taking care of their child by themselves. This is usually because they do not know how, or they simply do not want to take care of their child. Statistics show that family structure has a big impact on certain characteristics of a child such as their attitude and level of respect. Children tend to be less respectful to people because they do not respect the parent who is not around. In many cases a child may become depressed living with only one parent causing them to get out of control and do things that they shouldn’t. In ways that are, in certain areas, similar to that of blacks or non-white people, women also face the same type of job problems and wages shorting that non-whites also are victim of. Linda Burnham, in her writing of Gender and the Black Jobs Crisis, cites data that shows, in 2013, women accounted for 46.9% of total employed people in low-wage jobs across America. When compared to the 11.4% of total employed that the black community contributes to the total amount of in low-wage jobs, that’s quite a staggering amount (SOURCE). Another level of complexity that’s thrown into the mix are women belonging to minority groups: black women earned 70% of white men’s income in 2015 while Hispanic women earned only 54% of what white men were payed in 2016 (SOURCE1 & SOURCE2).
Single Parent Struggle For many years, children growing up in a single parent family have been viewed as different. Being raised by only one parent seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. The problem lies in the difference of children raised by single parents versus children raised by both a mother and a father.
