Sinatra’s major turning point in his singing career
After enjoying a tremendous popularity as a teenage idol, Sinatra’s career as a singer was continually declining as his fans, consisting of most of the teenage girls, begin to abandon him by the early 1950s. Many issues were surrounding Sinatra that has destructed Sinatra’s reputation, such as his affair with Ava Gardner that has led him divorcing with his first wife Nancy Barbato, and his connection with the mafia. Many people might have thought that his career as a singer is over. However, his singing career took a new turn over with the release of the album, which shows the persona entirely

It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard where it stayed for 18 weeks. Without a doubt, this is the album that is perfect for those nights when you cannot sleep due to sadness, loneliness, and despair. According to Charles L. Granata, In the Wee Small Hours was “the first concept album to make a single persuasive statement.” Rather than a mix and match of the songs, the songs in the album were written for this album, presenting the emphasis on producing records and regarding them as art. Consequently, it revolutionized the music industry perhaps more than any other album. It includes sixteen songs that were inspired by Sinatra’s circumstance at the time, dealing with the theme of sadness, lost-love, despair, and loneliness. At the time the album was recorded, he was having severe trouble with his second wife, Ava Gardner, who Sinatra married in 1951. They were divorced two years after this album was released. So, the central theme of all of the songs on the album is his reflection of melancholic loneliness due to his failure of the relationship with Ava …show more content…
With the release of this album, his singing career had a turning point. Consisting of sixteen songs, the total length of the album is about fifteen minutes. This album is one of the most critical records in popular music history as it was the very first LP recording released in the 12-inch format. Granata says “it was issued on two 10 inch disc (eight songs each); shortly thereafter, they were combined to create one 12-inch album, and from that point on, 12-inches were the rule.” The recording took place at the Capitol Records Studio building in Hollywood, California, arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle, who has already arranged two albums – Swing Easy and Songs For Young

In the novel in the heat of the night and in the movie remember the titans the two main characters, Virgil Tibbs and Herman Boone, where stuck in very similar situations, both being black men taking over a job from a white man and then being ridiculed for taking that job over. In this essay we will be looking at one of the similarities and differences that each of these 2 characters have and why they have those similarities and differences and what effect it had on the story.
In the article “Pearls Before Breakfast”, Gene Weingarten creates a social experiment at a busy Washington subway station to determine if people would recognize Joshua Bell, as a world famous violin player. Or would they disregard him as just another street performer? Weingarten journey’s through the events of the day with Bell and his 3.5 million dollar violin. We see throughout the article a contrast between the music and the people passing by. People effortlessly ignore Bell’s music to catch their train or purchase lottery tickets, while back a few nights ago Bell’s playing leaves the audience in silent awe. While illustrating the several different reactions of the people passing by Weingarten intrigues us in “Pearls Before Breakfast” by exposing how our busy lives and preoccupations keep us from seeing the extraordinary that can be found in the most mundane situations.
In his poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, poet Robert Frost communicates the idea that everything created in the cosmos which is pure and possesses the beauty of gold can’t be put at a halt. It will lose its glow or purity at one time or the other. He reveals this idea through the use of a metaphor. Through lines one and five of his poem, he compares the nature’s leaves to a golden and beautiful sighted moment that doesn’t last long enough so that we can enjoy its bright view every day, and ultimately it all withers away through its color and appearance. “Nature’s first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold.” In these lines, Robert Frost explains the meaning that the glistening green color of the nature when all its leaves bloom is a flourishing sight, but it’s a radiant color that is hard to be hold. In line six, he uses an allusion to Adam and Eve’s story. “So Eden sank to grief.” This line expands on the idea that purity is another thing that can’t remain forever. When Eve ate from the tree of knowledge, Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden of Eden and that created consequences...
During the 1940’s, the world found itself dealing with World War II and in the United States ,a huge African culture movement swept throughout the north-eastern states. One specific artist that captivated the “Nightlife” of African Americans during that era was Archibald Motley Jr. He painted a series of paintings that involved African Americans and their culture. In the painting, “Nightlife” we see a group of African Americans dancing at a club/bar, enjoying life, and swaying their hips to the music. Perhaps, in this painting, Motley wanted his public to notice the breakthrough, blacks had during the 1940’s and wanted to show how music took their mind on a different stroll apart from the troubling issues the world was dealing with. Archibald wanted the world to notice the dynamic and exciting Negro culture.
The script of On the Verge is one of great abstractness. The play itself is quite funny and light at face value, with yetis and cannibals making appearances. Beyond these lighthearted instances, the script takes deeper meaning with references to woman’s rights and character symbolism.
Loneliness is an emotion many people express in art in order to feel better. These works of art are often songs and poems. The song "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles and the poem "At a Window" by Carl Sandburg explore loneliness and how it affects those who experience it. Poetry and song have both been used to express emotion for decades. The two art forms are so comparable that practitioners of either try to convert those on the "other side" to express their art in the other way. As Adam Kirsch says, "... to the poet, turning a rapper into a poet is a cultural promotion; to the rapper, it looks more like a forfeiture of authenticity" (1). Both poets and song artists believe their form of expression is suitable, but in specific cases, song
Ol' Blue Eyes had cut some 1,800 recordings, gathered nine Grammys, and was considered by many critics to be the preeminent singer of this century (CNN, N.Pag). Durring his long career he became on e of the most successful pop music figures of the century. Sinatra’s sophisticated musicianship was evident in his many recordings. For over 300 years women in the United States have been trying to rewrite their roles in society. From Abigail Adams to Hillary Clinton women throughout American history have fought to break down the barriers set before them in order to gain equal rights. During the 19th century, Louisa May Alcott dedicated her life’s work to such issues. In her classic fictional novel, Little Women, Louisa May Alcott uses the literary devices of self-insertion, setting, and specific characterization to analyze the position of women in society.
Nurses have been working 12-hour shifts for almost 50 years. It all started with the nursing shortage and hospitals needing fewer nurses to work more hours and has continued to be the standard of shifts for nurses. Over the years, there have been many benefits for the hospitals, nurses, and even patients. With these long hours, it can lead to many things such as nursing fatigue and other downsides that can affect everyone including the patient and public. Can does the positive out weight the negative? Are longer shifts putting the patient first and protecting the patient or putting the patient at an unnecessary added risk for injury and accident. In my current hospital, I have seen an increase in nurses who seem to always be talking about
After selecting a clip entitled “Oh What a Night” for the hit TV show, “The Game”, the characters Derwin and Melony intriguingly displayed verbal and non-verbal communication. During this particular conversation the characters discussed their first sexual encounter. Melony, who is the fiancé’ of Derwin, utilized a less demanding form of communication when she conveyed her ideas about their first physical interaction. Melony used more relaxed language and had a very calm tone. Her body language was very welcoming as she remains seated during most of the conversation. Derwin demanded Melony to stay and she was submissive in her actions by staying to hear more of what he had to say. There is a point in the conversation where Derwin initiated a kiss with Melony and she is receptive to it. He then picks her up and puts her down after being told too. Afterwards he tells her to be quiet and she does. From this interaction it can be concluded that Derwin was more aggressive and assertive in his communication style. He used more demanding language that seemingly directed action and
The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic short story by Edgar Allen Poe, perhaps the most iconic early american gothic writer. The video Every 15 Minutes was very touching and moving. It made me rethink everything I had ever thought of parting in college and in high school. However i am very lucky to go the school i got to, it is very small and people are less likely to throw crazy parties that involve drugs and alcohol. That does not mean that they can’t either, anyone can have access to alcohol if the parents/guardians have it in the house; most adults figure that teens are responsible enough to know better than steal the alcohol and drink it. Driving impaired is very risky for all: the driver, passengers, and traffic. With the drive having alcohol in his system, he can experience being visually impaired, meaning he can start to see objects, not seeing objects in
Responding to a love that is off-limits between two people is always a topic of interest. Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is mainly about a fictional character named Dick Diver who meets an 18-year-old movie starlet, Rosemary Hoyt in the summer of 1925. Rosemary was on a trip in the French Riviera when she met Dick, the son of a clergyman and an up and coming psychologist. She instantly falls in love with him but doesn’t know of his mentally ill wife, Nicole. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald shows the feeling of indomitable love through Dick and Rosemary even through circumstances where their love is forbidden. He also shows deteriorating mental health through the character of Nicole Diver, who has been sexually abused in her life, causing her to have an acute fear of men. The last topic that Fitzgerald portrays in the novel is forbidden love. He shows us this topic through Dick and Rosemary once again, as they fall in love even through tough
