After sitting through an in person interview with Tiera Darnall-Charlton, it would be easy to say that my knowledge for business has expanded exponentially. Tiera is a twenty-eight year veteran employee at State Farm Insurance Company. She holds the title of Human Resources Supervisor. She has a vast passion for providing excellent customer service and the development of the employees she manages. Tiera works in a Human Resources Shared Service environment that offers support to employees across the United States. Tiera has attained her knowledge to becoming a successful manager by a combination of education and experience. She has learned a lot from taking risks and making mistakes. Learning from failure she believes can be one of the greatest contributors to success. This is the first point in my study that I have formally attempted to answer this question although it has guided my methodology. I consider that it is due to the early recall and examination of my educational experiences that I am beginning to understand my journey on a personal level prior to senior leadership. I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. Coaching is not an easy task and figuring out the best way to lead and guide employees can be overwhelming and challenging. Alex is now in a position where she has to be a motivator, leader, and a coach to several employees. She needs to understand the concept of coaching and the behaviors that go along with her coaching style. The concept of coaching helps develop and grow employees to achieve performance improvement, but it also helps the managers see how the employees embrace their job tasks and asses their results in comparison to the overall mission of the company (Bawany, 2015). The task of completing the mock interview was very insightful and yet nerve-wracking. This experience allowed me to learn a lot about how others and prospective employers may perceive me. In addition, I also learned a lot about myself. I took some time in advance to plan for the interview. I considered aspects such as when to arrive, what to wear and preparing a resume.
