Improving My Writing Skills

From my early years I found it extremely strenuous to comprehend and to gain interest while reading and writing. Reading, also writing has always been a challenge; this pushed me towards my interest in math and science. I longed to improve my reading level and my writing skills, but never could. To this day it affects my life, on my ACT scores I achieved a sixteen in English and a twenty in reading while I excelled in math and science scoring twenty-four in both. Reading and writing being life long skills I must progress and improve. As reading and writing become frequent, I toil to gain additional knowledge to improve my work. In my opinion, this was one of the best parts of the day; I realized that I didn’t like reading by myself but having someone else read. I was the youngest in my class by one year, so I was behind, as far as my reading level, having to read sentences as I found it difficult and to understand. The classes became harder and I struggled to keep up, Richard Allington, an American scholar and researcher at the University of Tennessee, states “It is the high accuracy, fluent, and easily comprehended reading that provides the opportunities to integrate complex skills and strategies into an automatic, independent reading process.” Explaining the points that I struggled with, I was behind; I had not yet become fluent or comprehensive as the other students had. As the class started reading books on our own, I noticed the only way I could read is if I was deeply interested in the book, if I lost interest in the book there was no motivation to read it. All the work I put in, all the hours I struggled, and attending classes before and after school made formed me into the reader and writer I have become. One motto I have always lived by is, “there is always room for improvement”, meaning that having the right mind set or attitude can push you forward and assist in achieving any goal. Richard Nordquist, is a professor emeritus of rhetoric and English at Armstrong Atlantic State University, explains it perfectly when he says “Certainly you can change your attitude--and you will, as you gain more experience as a writer.” In my case, where I am now is the result of my persistent attitude to improve.
