While working with children the knowledge of child development is very important so that we can help the children. By knowing and utilizing our knowledge of child development and the ways children learn it helps us create developmentally appropriate activities for the children to do. This always needs to be on our mind.
This standard is one of the many things that I do on a day to day basis when working with children. Making sure that they are getting what they need to be able to develop and learn. Working with children from Year 5 to Year 12 in an aquatic setting. I am responsible for supervising and educating these children, whilst being actively engaged in the planning process. The service we provide caters for a number of diverse children as we regularly engage with students with physical and intellectual disabilities. Subsequently, our service incorporates inclusive planning in order to accommodate the needs of all students. As an extension of the planning process we also regularly engage in risk management
Babies and children need to have positive interactions and form firm attachments from the earliest stages, and feel reassured emotionally by the adults around them. It is very important to give children praise, encouragement and guidance because it will help them develop a greater sense of self-worth. Children will in turn be able to form positive relationships and friendships with their peers through their interactions. Physical development is very important for children it involves children’s health, physical strength, mobility and sensory abilities.
This also allows families to make the right decisions about the services that provide the best education and care for their children. In the National Quality Standard, there are seven standards that provide children with the quality of education and care services. These seven standards include educational program and practice; children’s health and safety; physical environment; staffing arrangements; relationships with children; collaborative partnerships with families and communities; leadership and service management (Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority [ACECQA], 2013). The National Quality Standard aims to support and foster the safety, health and wellbeing of children. It also aims to provide high-quality educational programmes to achieve positive outcomes for children.
Chapter one provided a brief overview on child development, which included debated topics, theories and the various stages of development. The chapter was an introduction to readers that outlined the basic notions of child development and how they can be implemented while working with children. The field of development includes factors such as nature, nurture, existing conditions for the child and the child’s own traits. During my time at placement I have worked with a diverse range of people. Not only have I engaged with children, from babies up to children aged 18, but I have also worked with adults. The families that I have supported have consisted of 2 parent families, lone parents, through to grandparents whom have a residency order. These families all had different backgrounds and unique needs, ranging from carers with learning disabilities, those with mental health issues and families who were unemployed and living in poverty. The children I worked with were not only affected by these factors, but they also had their own issues to contend with, including; child J who had learning difficulties and was significantly behind in his education; child E who was delayed developmentally due to experiencing neglect, and child R who had been subjected to physical abuse and was now suffering with low self-esteem and self-confidence.

Classroom teachers should collaborate with other teachers at their grade level to determine what standards and objectives are going to be taught and in what order.
