Child development is the study and understanding of the physical, cognitive, and emotional and social changes from birth to adolescence. Understanding your children and the many changes they go through is the most important thing when it comes to childhood development because it’s a major part of being an effective parent. Even though the early years in life are the most crucial to your child development, late adolescents continue to still mature physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. The most important aspect of this stage is communication. Without positive effective communication parents have no chance of helping teens develop the confidence they need to carry out effective behaviors (Brooks, 2010). Socially, adolescents become more involved and start forming relationships outside of their family. This stage can bring upon many challenging behaviors that can leave parents feeling overwhelmed, worried, and stressed. Some young adults may feel that they are old and wise enough to take care and look after themselves without parental guidance, so it is important to allow teens to seek independence while still having a strong relationship with them (Brooks, 2010). It helps to create and maintain a positive relationship/ environment with open communication. Teenagers engaging in sexual activity, alcohol and substance use are risky and challenging behaviors. Parent-child relationship quality is often measured by the level of satisfaction teens and parents have with one another; the amount of warmth, love, affection, and communication teens receives from their parents (Kim, 2008). The quality of parental relationships influences teen’s relationships with friends, but it is the quality of teens’ friendships that reduce their relationships with romantic partners (Brooks, 2010).
