Music and theater has been around for centuries and has continued to grow with new songs and shows. Each production has a group of people who work together to bring a great story to life through words and lyrics. Many may not realize it, but the utilization of theater and music in the classroom is relevant to communication in a larger sense. It can become a source of expression when words cannot do so. With the help of music and theater in the classroom, students learn more in-depth: how theater can help students confidently understand different types of literature, how acting out a script can help students communicate better, and how music can help explain words in texts. Having each student act as a character in a production is a way for them to interact with each other, even if they are not portraying their own self. Not only does theater allow students to interact with one another, it is also a time where friendships are created. Being able to communicate with one another is important for students because students can effectively construct their knowledge by collaborating and considering others’ opinions. Although using theater in the classroom is not commonly used as an element to help students understand literature, it should be something to consider. Putting theater into class activities and assignments is unique and unexpected, which is something that students will pay more attention to. Reading a story and analyzing the text as a class is not as enjoyable, especially when it is a norm that is followed through majority of all school subjects. However, using theater can be a way for English classes to be more innovative and refreshing. It can also be used as a way for students to enjoy reading literature in school. It is important for students to enjoy their education through literature because without the enjoyment, the motivation will slowly fade. Utilizing theater into the classroom allow students to “become engaged in multilayered, positive literary experiences” (Brinda 489). Unlike sitting in a chair and reading and analyzing a literary work, theater allows students to contribute their own energy to understand the story by performing on stage. By doing so, it also gives students a different perspective of the literature. Reading the words to oneself is different from actually acting out the words. Speaking the words out loud in front of others can bring out emotions that were hiding, waiting to be found. The continuous drive students have for learning is important to maintain in a classroom environment because each of the students have a similar goal: to succeed. That is what a teacher is there to do; they are there to help their students to succeed while they continually enjoy learning. Films such as Much Ado About Nothing with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, Hamlet with Mel Gibson and Glenn Close, Othello with Laurence Fishbourne and Henry V with Kenneth Branagh have been seen by a surprising number of teenagers. Often they have not understood it all, or even half of it, but they have been affected by the powerful characters and by the Shakespearean magic which has affected audiences around the world for centuries. They want to know more, they want to understand, and what better motvation can any teacher ask for than that students WANT ? That alone is sufficient reason for any English teacher to start a course in Shakespeare.

Theatre-In-Education The theatre education industry/movement has seen some rapid changes since its initial developments and establishment in the 1960’s. However its origins mainly lie in the early years of the last century. It was the initial establishment of companies such as Bertha Waddell’s in Scotland and Esme Church’s in the north of England that thoroughly established the main roots of TIE.
Then, there is technical theatre. This area of theatre is my favorite and the goal for my future. Technicians are the ones who create the world for the actors or somehow manage everything behind the scenes. Before I explain the multiple fields and areas of technical theatre, I must stress how important this side of theatre is overall. When it comes down to getting a degree in technical theatre or pursuing it, people tend to view it as a purely practical occupation and experience based. Theatre will always survive in our changing society. It provides us with a mirror of the society within which we live, and where conflicts we experience are acted out on stage before us. It provides us with characters with which we identify with. The audience observes the emotions and actions as they happen and share the experience with the characters in real time.
My experience watching a live theatre performance on stage was a fascinating one, most especially since it was my first time. I attended a staged performance of “The History Boys” in a small theatre called “The Little Theatre of Alexandria” at 8:00 pm on Wednesday June 8, 2016 in Alexandria, Virginia. The overall production of the play was a resounding experience for me particularly the performance of the actors and the design of the scene made the play seem real.
