Factors Related to Under Achievement in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) at Secondary School Level
STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This term is utilized while tending to instruction approach and educational modules decisions in schools, to enhance competitiveness in science and innovation improvement. The importance of STEM education cannot be ignored. STEM is essential since it invades all aspects of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously penetrating into each part of our lives. Engineering is the essential plans of streets and extensions, yet in addition handles the difficulties of changing worldwide climate and naturally inviting changes to our home. Mathematics is involved in each occupation and activity we do in our lives. By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it and hopefully pursue a job in a STEM field. There is no proper learning environment regarding informal STEM in learning and teaching process. Technological proficient workers are capable of dealing with the demands of a science-based high technology workforce and scientifically literate. Effective Science Technology and Mathematics (STM) education is critical to enable students to acquire knowledge. The deeper intrinsic value of STM education to shape and define our common life history and culture among others. Appropriate skills; abilities and competences that will enable them contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.
STEM is an acronym standing for science, technology, engineering, and math. Stem stands for science, technology, engineering, and math because those are the four things that are essential for success. The acronym STEM simply refers to science, technology, engineering and math. The acronym does not mean that STEM defines any specific type of job only in the sense jobs are related to science, technology, engineering, and math. Because of the nature of these jobs refers to STEM industries, these types of jobs in education and social sciences are not included. The main jobs included are within the fields of computers and math. Almost the same number of boys and girls are graduating from high school and even more girls are graduating from college, yet women are still underrepresented in STEM industries. Though women comprise more than half of the workforce in the U.S economy, they hold less than twenty five percent of jobs in STEM industries.
STEM is significant to our society, we need jobs not only to compete globally, but to also fix the important problems of the world. Technology is pervasive in almost every aspect of daily life, and as the workplace changes, STEM knowledge and skills grow in importance for a variety of workers (not just for mathematicians and scientists) (Traurig par. 6). If corporations increase female participation in the future, not only will it increase more genders and diversity to work in the corporation, but it will also help solve the important problems of the world because of all the minds that are working together. The gender gap that results in the absence of women in STEM is progressive and persistent. Not only is this an issue of equity, but a lack of female participation in STEM results in a lack of diversity among perspectives regarding solutions to problems and other scientific endeavors. The gender gap in STEM can be seen as the result of several factors including teacher bias in the classroom, a chilly climate from male colleagues as they progress through their careers, little societal support for wanting a career and a family, lacking role models in their study of interest, and an overall lack of science preparation when it comes to pursuing a STEM career.

Education remains a cornerstone for society as it has for decades. Technology advances, the economy fluctuates, and politics change, but education remains, not only important but imperative for personal and social growth. Yet, as important as it is touted to be, the quality and purpose of learning is often lost in the assembly-line, manufactured process of education that exists today.
In this society, the major educational branches that receive the most attention is, the majors that Involve – Math, Science, Technology and engineering, also better recognized as STEM. It is difficult to find a job involving the arts because those jobs are limited and it’s also hard to find an occupation with a good salary. A good handful of college attendees are majoring in either in a science, or in technology. We have transferred into an era where technology has become prime and science has always been important but in this generation, there more discoveries and questions about the world around us, and many people focus on those branches of education because they have a great impact on society going forward.
Imagine a world where the diseases we know today are virtually eradicated, and where incurable injuries are a thing of the past. Even though this sounds like a science fiction movie, advances in modern science are making this statement more of a reality than a dream. This can be accomplished through stem cell therapy and cell differentiation. Stem cell therapy is like an intervention, in which new cells are introduced into the body or tissue in order to treat a disease or injury (Haldeman-Englet, Chad). Cell differentiation is the process in which a cell has the potential to become physically/fundamentally and functionally different from one another Also meaning they are pluripotent (Smith, S.E). These special cells have many uses, thus the nickname “The Golden Cell.” Scientists have been fascinated by stem cells for many years now, and why? What is so special about them? One: Their specific role in the body has yet to be determined. Two: Stem Cells can become almost any cell type. Three: Stem cells have the ability to proliferate almost indefinitely. Stem cells are now the centerpieces of regenerative medicine. This involves growing new cells, tissues, and organs to repair or replace those damaged by injury or disease (Knowles, Lori P.).
According to Byman and Kansanen (2008, p605) ‘… teaching in itself does not imply learning’. The underachievement of young people in education has been a priority in British politics for over two decades (Ross, 2009). The estimates of academic underachievement at Key Stage 4 (KS4) are reportedly between one fifth and one third of the KS4 population in England (Steedman and Stoney, 2004). An Ofsted (2013) report identifies that pupils’ aged from 11 to 16 (early KS4) is below the national average. Underachievement in KS4 has become a recurring phenomenon (Wogboroma, 2014), with several academics and government bodies, identifying a range of significant implications, not only for the individual but also for wider society (Beinart, et al. 2002; McIntosh and Houghton, 2005; Hosie, 2007; Ofsted, 2013; DfE, 2014). This unseen cluster of learners that are academically underachieving is representative of an objectionable waste of potential, in addition incurring subsequent costs, from an individual viewpoint to a national scale (Ofsted, 2013). Consequently, recognizing and instigating timely interventions to tackle underachievement in KS4 and subsequently achieve social justice for this learner group should be a fundamental goal for schools. Motivation is recognised as an effective tool to overcome underachievement (Mega, et al. 2014) Furthermore, the intrinsic loci of motivation has developed to become an important phenomenon for educators, as it produces high-quality and effective learning in addition to creativity and achievement that can be progressively nurtured by teacher practices (Ryan & Stiller, 1991). STEM is best known as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM for many years has been primarily seen as and stereotyped into a masculine work field. But as of recent years, while it expands, more and more women have been rising in these fields. However, there is still a tremendous gender gap between men and women in these fields and areas of work. The gender gap between men and women in STEM is alive and well. This class has opened my mind to the incredible impact that STEM Education can have on our society. I do not work in an institution that has a STEM program. I work at a preschool; this makes my practice of any type of STEM program extremely limited. However, it is a private school. All my students come from households where one or both of their parents are professionals. These professionals want their children to be academically prepared for school. This means we must academically, mentally, and emotionally prepare them for their future schooling. I teach my students how to be a functioning participant in a classroom while exploring mathematics, science, art, history, literature and pre-writing. I myself was guilty of the common misconception of what technology refers to. I too, believed that technology only refers to devices with a plug. It wasn’t till recently after class and after reading Chapter 2 in STEM Lesson Essentials that I realized that technology expresses a profound multitude of products, processes and systems. While the students evolve and become STEM literate they need to be able to comprehend and determine technologies and their use in the world, and then reach out and fix or find away to make it even better then it already is.
