Reparations Needed The topic of reparations African Americans believed they are owed has been a topic of much debate in recent years. Many African Americans feel that reparations are long overdue for the many years that their ancestors labored for nothing. Some have argued as to why reparations are needed and how would they be distributed. Most in the African American community have given up hope, the feeling among them is that, they have never been treated fairly, why would it start now. Reparations could be used to provide African Americans access to lowest interest loans, to make the reality of homeownership possible to those that otherwise would not be able to afford it. American Indians have received three types of reparations, cash payments, through the operation of the Indian Claims Commission and the U.S. Court of claims, land through an occasional action of Congress to return control over land to particular tribes, and tribal recognition, by either Congress or the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The United States awarded reparations to Japanese Americans for their internment during WWII. In 1998 President Ronal Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act to compensate more than 100,000 people of Japanese descent who were incarcerated in internment camps during WWII ordering that $20,000 dollars is paid to each surviving victim. As stated by Jamelle Bouie from the Slate “The case for reparations, in short, is straightforward.
