Sports fans have depended on sports broadcasters for years to keep sports games of all levels a lively event. Someone who wanted to do become a sports anchor could also study how current anchors preform and try to imitate their actions (Clapp). Dan Patrick, a sports anchor for ESPN, suggests to "watch the people who are doing the job." This can help you realize what looks and sounds good to say during a game, and what doesn't. Watching experienced people can guide whoever is observing to do what they do. Having well-taught instruction and plenty of experience will help one's journey to becoming a sports …show more content…
It ends about twelve hours later" (centives.net). During that time, broadcasters write what they are going to say during interviews and games and they have meetings and do interviews throughout the day. They're schedule involves a lot of pub lic speaking and occasionally having to travel. Centives.net claims that broadcasters sometimes have to travel more than sports coaches. They have to be at games all across the country to be able to interview players or perform live broadcasts. Traveling is a big part of becoming a sports along with the publicity. Sports anchors can be very well known and can be publicized either positively or negatively. If a broadcaster were to say something someone found offensive, they can be publicized badly and may even be fired. For example, an ESPN anchor used a "vulgar reference [toward] Jesus Christ" which many people found offensive (Sheppard). Anchors need to be very careful of what they say because it is all being recorded and someone can use their words against them. Publicity is a big aspect of becoming a broadcaster because many people will know who you are and what you do. After reading the essay On Writing by Stephen King, it was apparent that improving writing skills is important. The beginning to forming a better career is to first read because “one learns most clearly what not to do by reading bad prose”. (King) Improving writing skills can further improve verbal communication skills and help to advance in life. When someone improves their writing skills, they can then improve their verbal communication skills. Improving both verbal and written communication skills will lead to a better career path.
Can women's sports establish itself as a topic of on-going media and journalism curiosity? Currently TV stations do minimal coverage of women's sports, while newspapers and magazines do just a little bit better. In a recent interview with Gary Webb, a sports writer for The Spectrum, he says that "the people have demonstrated that there is an audience that loves hearing about women athletes. After all, they are somebody's kids, sisters, and moms". I learned that these sports writers love to cover women's games, especially girls highschool basketball games. Gary said that he would rather watch a Parowan-Beaver girls game over the boys anyday. Karen Winegar, staff writer for the The Star Tribune of Minnesota said., "Portrayal of female athletes is improving, but despite increasing interest and participation, their sports are getting no more coverage than they got five years ago" (1A+). Women's sports participation will surely continue to grow in the future, so the media and journalists better be prepared to increase their coverage accordingly.
"If industry is to be successful in dealing with public opinion . . . it must learn the language of the people, it must consider the study of public opinion as important as any phase of its operations. It must recognize that public opinion can be measured, and utilize the increasingly scientific methods developing today for gauging it"(Ross)
Most people watch some form of sports, whether it be the Olympics or the highlights on ESPN. The NBA and NHL playoffs are underway and it seems to be the only news on ESPN. There is almost no coverage of the WNBA playoffs or any female athletics. Tennis is one of the only big sports on ESPN for women. While during the Olympics, the coverage seems to be non-stop and close to equal.
In Stephen King’s essay, “On Writing” he stresses the importance of reading as an invaluable tool to improve one’s writing. However, why does being a good writer matter to someone who is not a writer? In the New York Times article, “What Good Writing Indicates, and Doesn’t,” Brock Haussamen writes that “good writing—writing that is clear and interesting and free of most surface errors—is a reliable indicator of certain job-rated abilities.” Enhanced writing skills, developed by extensive reading, showcase job-related abilities, improve written and verbal communication skills and can lead to advancement in the workplace.

Sports Broadcasting has brought athletes into the forefront of popular culture by showing their personalities on and off the field to the public. The genre of sports broadcasting is typically just thought to be the simple commentating of sporting events. However, there are two other massive subgenres of sports broadcasting known as Reporting and analyzing. The reporters are the dirty work diggers of the industry by using investigative skills and tough questions to gain interesting perspectives from the players and coaches themselves. The answers the reporters gain are then reviewed by the minds who try to use the information in a way that captivates audiences all over by analyzing these statements in whichever way they feel important.
Such skills as communication, creativity, and critical thinking. I would argue that critical thinking is easily the most important because if one does not critically think about something they will not be creative. Also, if they do not critically think before they begin to communicate eventually no one will listen.
ESPN has completely changed the way the world receives and perceives sports information. Thirty-Five years ago when ESPN aired its first SportsCenter, followed by sports only programing people thought they were crazy. There was no way they would succeed. And they came very close to failure. A company that was a million dollar investment and few months away from bankruptcy is currently the richest network in the world by more than twelve billion dollars (Said, TheRichest).
Journalism as a reporter career requires classes that should be taken while she is in high school. The classes are: English, Journalism, History, Social Studies, Communication, Typing, and Computer Science. Since all these classes have been taken, it will be good also to take speech courses because it will help her to feel comfortable in interviewing skills, which are required to be a successful reporter. Later in college it would be good to take pre courses such as a foreign language, Math and Science (Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center).
