During my observations at “Don’t Worry Childcare”, I realized a great amount of multicultural practices. For starters, I observed the preschoolers say hello and good morning every day in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. During circle time, the teacher says, “Okay can someone raise their hand and tell me how to say good morning in German?” I have seen each and every child say good morning in those languages. Not only have I seen the children say good morning and hello in other languages, the teacher taught them how to sing the days of the week in Spanish. I observed the children count to ten in German. The use of other languages is not the only reason why the preschool class is multicultural. The baby dolls are all different races. There are a few African American dolls, Caucasian dolls, and even a Chinese doll. Hung up on the walls are pictures of Indians, African Americans, and Caucasians. I will continue the trend of teaching the children good morning in multiple languages. I desire to teach my students how to count to ten in Spanish and German. I will provide baby dolls of all skin colors. I plan to include posters of other cultures and races hung up in the classroom. I think I will teach a lesson every once a month on a different culture. The students will learn about the food other cultures eat, the language they speak, the sports they play, and the activities they do for fun. I may even play music for the children in other languages. I will have days planned to bring in food from other cultures for the children to try. The article talks about how teachers need to have cultural compatibility. While it might be difficult for some teacher to grasp and understand the different cultures behaviors and beliefs. For those teacher that can are more likely to provide a learning environment that is enriching and responsive to the children’s different cultures. Teacher should have “meaningful interactions with members of other cultures and promote cultural disequilibrium (Colombo, 2005, p. 2).” Activities that have this are more likely to increase cultural competence.
As stated in my Week 3 Journal Entry, at one point I was helping in a classroom with a child who speaks Spanish. Instead of trying to force the child to speak English, I tried to use some basic Spanish when I worked with them in order to make the child feel more comfortable. I believe by making this small effort to speak the child’s native language that the child was more willing to participate in class and try to learn English. An additional example of making a relation from the text to a personal experience is when I was in elementary through high school. I did not realize until reading Spring’s book how little cultural diversity was taught in my elementary, middle, and high school. I went to school in a very Scandinavian county, and we did not have a lot of diversity. There were several students in the district who came from Hispanic, Asian, or African decent—but they were very few. I cannot recall a day when a teacher spent time to discuss a one of these student’s cultures, which is utterly ridiculous. With the amount of time spent in school and the amount of diversity in the world, it seems illogical to barely speak of ethnic and cultural diversity. Even though there were only a handful of students in the district from different cultures, it would have been beneficial to learn more about the rest of the world because when high school is done we all go out into that diverse world. I agree with the article, “Diversity in Early Childhood Education,’ by Francis Wardle (2003) that “diversity or multicultural education is, a continuous approach to working with children, parents, families and colleagues every day” (p.2). We need to work together to develop an approach that involves exposing children to a variety of activities through their classroom environment plus utilizing parent participation to reinforce classroom expectation of acceptance of individual differences. Reflecting in my anti-bias approach in the classroom, there is a need for me to implement parent input into my classroom environment. Parents are a wealth of knowledge and they can add their own cultural items into my dramatic play center plus they can participate during my circle or small group time as well. Currently, I am introducing a parent questioner at October’s parent meeting to familiarize myself with family’s cultural diversity that currently have children in my classroom. The world is made up of many different types of people, each one having his or her cultural background. Over the years, the United States has become increasingly populated with cultural diversity. This influx has prompted school administrators to recognize the need to incorporate multicultural programs into their school environment including classroom settings, school wide activities, and curriculum as it becomes more evident that the benefits of teaching cultural diversity within the school setting will positively influence our communities, and ultimately the entire nation’s future. The purpose of this paper is to share the pros and cons of multicultural education in the classroom. Additionally, I will express my views compared to those in the reading requirements for this assignment, as well as, new knowledge obtained through the research. Students attending American schools are taught clearly about the United States’ image as a melting pot; however, there is evidence to support that, while there is not an official federal stance on the matter (Sengupta), the amount of assimilation required to be legitimately considered a “melting pot” is not being reached. Although similar, there is often confusion about the differences between “multicultural” and “assimilated” communities. By definition, assimilation is the complete “merging of cultural traits from previously distinct culture groups” (Dictionary), while multiculturalism is delineated as the “preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unified society, as a state or nation” (Dictionary). Early to mid-1900’s America entertained the idea of a melting pot, where people from all parts of the world would join together and assimilate. It seems, however, that the growing trend has been to treat America as more of a “salad bowl” (Porter), in that people are joining together but instead of merging as one unit, are maintaining a majority, if not all, of their primary culture with little attempt to adapt. This underachievement has left America to unintentionally become a multicultural society. The clear differentiation between expectation and reality brings vast amounts of controversy among the nation’s people.
An anti-bias multi-cultural approach curriculum allows children to embrace who they are and learn to respect others who are different from them. As the children enter different career paths, they will be working with a diversity of people. The classroom is a place we can start to teach them to build positive relationships with everyone. We want our children to be comfortable to speak about their cultural, without feeling shame or fear of being jugde. Preparing children at an early age could help them to be welcoming to others who are not the same as they become older. Also, it may encourage children to stand up for himself or herself and others.
The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children. There is no question that the education must be prepared to embrace the diversity and to teach an increasingly diverse population of young children.

Culture is a powerful influence plays a big role in our interactions. Culture may also impact parenting style and a developing child. Having a strong sense of their own cultural history and the traditions associated with it helps children build a positive cultural identity for themselves. In the future, the world will only become more diverse. People should learn to appreciate it by acknowledging the differences around them. Sometimes people are scared that “recognizing differences will divide people from each other. However, learning about cultural differences can actually bring people closer together” ( “Section 1”). It would be better if people became closer together instead of growing apart because of discrimination and other mistreatment. Building relationships with different cultures should be a goal of everyone and even nations as a whole. Each group has different strengths that can benefit the the community altogether. Since the world will definitely become more diverse, it is important to be informed about cultural groups so you can become more marketable and succeed in a diverse world.
