The New Direction for the Reform of Present Education System
Many scholars once criticized the education system in America. Even as the most developed country in the world, the education system there still is not satisfactory to some education experts. They think that the influence of the federal government to the education is very limited. For example, Ken Robinson once pointed out his worries about the education systems and put forward that the current education system should be changed. And some other people also believed that the current education system was out of date, because its design and structure came from the era of the industrial revolution. She stated that nobody loves failure, failing and persisting to practice and attempt will be helpful to cultivate the growth mindset. For most educators, how to develop all the students with a growth mindset and avoid the fixed mindset are very useful to improve the education system. Then what is the difference between the fixed mindset and growth mindset? A person with a fixed mindset usually believes that the human qualities are inherent and given by talent. However, a person with a growth mindset holds the positive belief that you can make progress about your abilities if you keep practicing and working hard. For example, two persons with the opposite mindsets face with the failure of an examination; the fixed mindset person may deny himself and be negative about the exam, however, the person with a growth mindset may work harder to change the disadvantageous environment. According to Dweck, Students with a growth mindset usually love to take challenges, become braver when facing difficulties and troubles, learn measures and knowledge to make progress or improve their conditions. In general, they have a mastery goal orientation focused on learning. In contrast, students with a fixed mindset loves showing off when succeeding at easy tasks. And according to the research, the students with a growth mindset usually have higher achievement and pay more efforts than the students with a fixed mindset from early childhood to college. Because of the negative consequences of students with a fixed mindset students, educators should adopt effective measures to help students to cultivate the growth mindset. Just like Dweck pointed out in her research, teachers can successfully change students’ mindset. But how to achieve the goal of changing the students with fixed mindset into growth mindset? Teachers should intervene among students and tell them how to make progress and obtain success through hard working. (Dweck, 2012). In addition, schools should promote the growth mindset of students by encouraging and praising. Proper praising and encouragement will stimulate the confidence of learning. But too much compliments may also cause negative consequences. So teachers should make the right balance when implementing the intervene
