It is very well said that fashion comes from within ourselves and not what we see and copy. It is reflected in our attitude, the way we walk, talk or even eat. There are no boundaries set as to what is fashionable and what is not. Whatever makes us happy, comfortable and confident is fashion and that is something that we should keep in mind. Fashion has become an integral part of any contemporary society. It is an omnipresent aspect of our lives and is one of the focal topics of the print and electronic media, television and internet, advertisements and window displays in shops and malls, movies, music, modes of entertainment etc. Though the term ‘fashion’ is often used synonymously with garment, it actually has a wider connotation. So, our clothes say a great deal about who we are and can signal a great deal of socially important things to others.
So, why is fashion essential?
It is not possible to ignore the fact that fashion plays an overwhelming part of everyone’s life all over the world, when some of the leading women, Michelle Obama for example, is looked over for their choice of fashion. Many a times fashion is labeled as fickle and irrelevant even when we know that it evokes a mood just like music, art or architecture do. Due to the wide range of human and social aspects within its ambit, it is also a topic of scholarly study by sociologists, psychologists and anthropologists.
It is so important to subjects like politics, history, our society and everything around us that fashion can no longer be addressed as a ‘silly obsession’ by those who do not understand its importance and cannot appreciate it. It is a means of representation, expression, and most importantly to portray originality and individuality. A personal sense of fashion will never change, no matter what the ‘trends’ are. THAT is the real

Nobody can deny the influence of fashion. Each of us is constantly affected by fashion in one way or the other one or other way. Print media and electronic media are most important in shaping our lifestyles. Even those who are anti-fashionistas are part of the fashion world in their own way. They are by making their own fashion statements. As Cecil Beaton said that “truly fashionable are beyond fashion.”
Fashion is a powerful instrument people have used for hundreds of years to assimilate to tribes, or differentiate /express themselves in society. We can be a politician, teacher, or a Hasidic Jew, but we care about what we wear. Fashion stigma comes from the commercial/retail side of the fashion industry. There's cultural significance, and a means of artistic expression that everyone forgets about fashion.
Everyone cares about fashion weather they know it or
A quote by American poet, Allen Ginsberg says, “You can’t escape the past in Paris, and yet what’s so wonderful about it is that the past and present intermingle so intangibly that it doesn’t seem to burden.” In order to truly understand the large role that fashion plays in a culture where the past is such a large part of the present, one must learn about its deep history and evolution.
According to Jennifer Craik dressing becomes a way in which ‘individuals and groups learn to be visually at home with themselves in their culture' J. Craik, The Faces of Fashion: Cultural Studies in Fashion, London, Routledge, 1944, p.30
Fashion in the 21st century is a big business, as its production employs millions of people and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Fashion has for the past century been, and is still today, used as an indicator of social change and progress, as it changes with the social norms of the society and the political changes of the world (Finkelstein 3). Our people are too blind to realize what fashion can do to a person. Sure first impressions are influenced by appearances. It’s true indeed that the first trait when people see each other for the first time is what they are wearing. However where do we draw the line? People excessively attempt to imitate runway models or their favorite artists. Becoming too wrapped up following the newest trend or the hottest style this season. Men and women desperately try to mold themselves into fashions “ideal body.” Fashion is harmful to society; it promotes harmful lifestyle choices, can contribute to bullying and often causes debt problems to young woman.
“Clothing, as one of the most visible forms of consumption, performs a major role in the social construction of identity. [..] Clothing is one of the most of the most visible markers of social status and gender.” (Crane, 2000, p.1). Buckley and Fawcett (2000) draw attention towards how fashion articulates different aspects of identity out of which gender is distinguished like no other, because clothes are used as a visible social marker to show gender differentiation. Fashion has closely been associated with gender and hence, looked up to when talking about gender.
...o contextual influences and past experiences. Therefore it is almost impossible to pre-empt the ways in which others will perceive you. Over time ideas will change and therefore alter the ways in which we look back on past clothing choices. Whilst symbolism in fashion may no longer be subject to laws as it was in the 14th century or defined by strict social rules in the 17th century, the clothes we wear are still today subject to imposed social ideals. Apart from distinguishing one status group from another, a style of dress may also aid group cohesiveness, provide the individual with an identity and a feeling of belonging, and communicate the wearer’s attitudes and interests. The ways in which we interpret others and present ourselves for interpretation is the only true way that we can be individual. Symbolism in clothing may not seem as obvious or important nowadays as it was in times of extreme social bigotry, but it is still highly prevalent and has remained one of the most effective ways to project our desired image to those around us. ‘The state of a person’s clothes is synonymous with self respect and is a sign of responsibility’ (www. It is necessary to identify fashion and explain the systems apparel industry uses before I start explore the essentiality of fast fashion. According to Dictionary.com, fashion is defined as the prevailing style or custom that is in a current mode and used to express oneself. It can be clothing, accessories, hair, etc. Why certain people like to frequently shop in malls and keep updating apparels in their closets every season? Form psychological perspective, people usually consider clothing as a symbol to show their values, personality and lifestyles to others. Critically, a rapid imaginative change and symbolic expression supports a sense people have about fashion. People believe that an ideal self-identity can be communicated to others through clothing, so figuring out how people make decision when they perceive clothing among different brands and understanding their needs and desires can help apparel industries expending and maintaining market s...
To begin with, I will look at each of the two subjects. Fashion is an extremely large subject with many sub-categories and can mean many different things, however in this essay I will take fashion to mean the popular clothing style. I will put emphasis on looking at high fashion as these are the leaders of their field. Fashion itself though, is not to be confused with clothing. Clothing is a part of fashion, but it is predominantly purely functional, for protection from different aspects of the environment. Fashion however, is primarily for image. It is a way to present individuality and personality. A physical mouldable form of expression. Designers wish to create works of art that can be worn, and this is wear clothing becomes an art form.
Fashion plays an important role in the lives of billions all over the world; people, as part of a status craving society, turn to “fashion capitals” of the world for ways in which to dress and carry themselves. New York, Milan, and Paris are leaders among this fierce industry that the world lusts after. Fashion can speak volumes about ones personality, or also about the condition the world is in at the time. In France, fashion changed rapidly and feverously as the times changed.
The phenomenon of fashion, the impact of which is recognized by the famous cliché: ―You are what you wear‖, offers a dense, rich set of costume options and reveals multiple and unexpected ways through which fashion is part of the concrete, tangible, profound, complicated and symbolic process of forming of the modern and postmodern Self, identity, body and social relations. The development of gender identity is a social construct with garment and fashion being two factors of this configuration. Even fashion should be considered as part of the social processes of discrimination, namely the reproduction of hierarchy’s position and prestige in a deeply unequal
Historically, multiple styles of dressing have been created during the last several decades, which played an important role in modern fashion in the UK. Everyone has a different and unique dressing style in their general life. Some styles are influenced in vintage styles which is attributing to the deep effects of old vogue, and another group of dressing styles are inclined into the fresh element. According to those different styles some of them are even evolved in the milestones in fashion history.
To begin with, I shall look at what fashion is; it is a currently popular style or practice involving clothing, footwear or accessories. It mostly refers to the current trends in looks and dressing style of a person (Cumming 234). In most cases, fashion is confusedly related to costumes; when a person talks of fashion they are seen to mean fashion in terms of textile. Fashion is seen to originate from the Western world and it is copied by other places. In this paper, we shall look at how fashion affects lifestyles and the group of people who are affected most. The paper further investigates how media is used to transmit fashion from one region to the other. Although it has been seen to affect people’s lives many people have different perspectives on fashion and dressing.
Clothing has been around for thousands of years; almost as long as the modern human has. At first, it served the practical purpose of protection from the elements; but, as life for early humans stopped being a constant struggle to survive, they started noticing how they looked and the concept of fashion began to take shape. These first few garments were typically dyed draped cloth that was pinned at the shoulder and/or waist. This was seen in many ancient civilizations around the world, Greek and Roman the most notable. Over time, clothing began to get more and more complex and formed to the body’s shape, eventually leading up to the tailored style we now have today. However, the sophisticated world of Haute Couture; or high fashion, can distinctly trace its roots to Paris during the mid-19th century. Clothing from there was thought to be superior to those from anywhere else, and women began to come from all over Europe just to buy dresses. This was probably due in part to one notable dressm...
