Introduction 1.1 Environment The term ‘Environmental awareness has become a very important term as it not only implies having knowledge about the environment, but also our moral values and necessary education to solve environment related problems. Having Environmental awareness is the responsibility of every citizen. Today environmental degradation is a matter of grave concern. In the name of development, we have consumed our natural resources ruthlessly and polluted our atmosphere. Scarcity of water, increasing levels of wastes, air pollution, and global warming are some common issue of which pose a great threat to the environment. The speed with which we are consuming our natural resources and polluting our environment is really a matter …show more content…
This shows that environmental awareness has a great effect on developing environmental attitudes which cultivate environmentally friendly behaviours among people proving advantage of widespread environmental awareness is its contributions to public support for government action in environmental policy and management. The main tool for creating environmental awareness at macro level is by far, the media. The mass media that can be used for the study of environmental consciousness are newspaper, radio and television programs which are widely and frequently used. Recently, different countries have started to strive for environmental development, protection and sustainable use of environmental resources by establishing environmental agencies, but actions are still not compatible with the magnitude of the environmental challenges. Environmental awareness needs a political answer. This is an emergency and emergency situations need emergency actions (UNEP …show more content…
The media greatly shape what the general population thinks about the environment. The media plays a great role in creating awareness (McQuail 1994). Undoubtedly the flow of environmental awareness and information through the media is greater and faster than it was, say, in the 1960s when the term "environmental awareness" was coined and the environment first became a subject of media coverage (Young 1990) and this coverage grew to an initial peak around 1970s following a decline in environmental coverage in the mid-1980s (Merriam & Makower, 1988), there had been a relatively dramatic increase in media interest in the coverage of environment during the late 1990s (Love, 1990, Starke, 1990, Stocking & Leonard 1990). It is observed that mass media, and TV in particular plays an important role in relation to public awareness and serve as a primary source of information for environmental issues. (Murch, 1971, Atwater et al., 1985 & Wilkins, 1987). The role of media in the development of environmental issues for public concern is a perspective which goes beyond ignoring the contribution of agenda setting, public opinion, and mass media research approaches in the study of mass media and environmental issues. (Anderson, Hansen 1991). These different approaches capable of explaining why media concern about environmental issues fades in and out of
The environment has always been controversial topic. Global warming, fossil fuels, and climate change usually are the main topics, when talking about the environment. Many people feel strongly about the issues pertaining to the environment, while others seem not to care. Though some of the populace seems to not care about the environment, many people do not fully understand what is going on. Most of the population is not fully educated on the issues of the environment. While some people are, they are not sure what to do with what they know. If more people had knowledge and knew how to help, would they?
Today’s mainstream media has a deep influence on numerous aspects of economical and social life, it provides information and data almost on everything that happens on our planet. Mainstream media became one of the most important and influential instruments in our society, as the news stories reach a large numbers of people in a short time. Different people are using mainstream media as a first source of information; humans need the information, which is why there is a great deal of trust on media. We follow the news because it is our duty as citizens to be informed; it gives us the facts that help us make the right decisions and also gives us something to talk about. The media has a great public responsibility in front of their audience; therefore, they are expected to provide information that is accurate, reliable and free from bias. It is essential that the public is truly informed about the controversial topics on environmental issues, like DDT and GMOs. Media informs the public with regard to science and technology, which further impacts policy making within the society. The drawback with today’s mainstream media is that it tends to provide information that is far from what is happening in the real world. Current news media misrepresent some news report in order to gain attention and they omit the most important news from television, newspapers or radio that the public deserves to know. The articles “Environmentalism for the 21st Century” by Dr. Patrick Moore, “Rachel Carson’s Environmental Genocide” by Lisa Makson, “Lawrence Solomon: For global warming believers, 2013 was the year from Hell” by Lawrance Solomon and “Global warming at work: how climate change affects the economy and labour” by Raveena Aulakh will be discussed ...
Pollution is affecting many individuals and life, as we know it. We need to do something about how it’s affecting our world. That’s why I urge the issue that more people should realize that pollution is an issue that needs to be prevented because of its negative consequences. Which are health affects, the total destruction of environments, and the death of animals and plants. More awareness must be brought up amongst the people and they must realize the long-term benefits it has for the world.
Human impact of global warming and climate change (now simply referred to as GWCC) has become a political issue because not all individuals and business are willing to voluntarily take the actions necessary that could help slow the rate of GWCC trends. According to Milfont (2012), these necessary actions “would require stringent policy interventions, which in democratic societies, would only be possible by widespread public support for at least the broad and long-term goals of such interventions” (p.1003). Media greatly influences this public support.
The economy and technology of late decades has grown with leaps and bounds. Mobile phone, Internet reduce the space and time between human beings. The globe is getting smaller, the way of people thinking is changing which means the whole society is experiencing a profound evolution. However, in this information explosion age, human society has to face unprecedented crisis- The gradual depletion of global natural resources and the sharply deteriorated of human’s living environment. People begin to have a strong feeling of losing control of these crisis. Therefore, sustainable development is being highly regarded.
Throughout the study of geography, there have been a variety of different approaches to explaining how the physical world has factored into the development of the world’s many cultures and societies. The relationship shared between humankind and the environment has always been one of immense complexity. Humanity has long been thought to act and think in direct response to his immediate surroundings. This in turn has enabled civilization to develop and be interpreted in diverse ways all across the globe. The correlation between the two would see further inquiry within the last one hundred years. In the twentieth-century, man has continued to study this relationship
“Through the ongoing interaction of theorizing and empirical research consistent with the scientific method, agenda-setting theory has evolved from a tightly focused perspective to a broad theory. Initially, the focus was on the way media affect the public’s view of which issues are important. Later the theory broadened to encompass five distinct aspects of public life: basic and attribute agenda-setting effects, the psychology of these processes, and the consequences of these effects for opinions and behavior. The participation of scholars worldwide has been central to the continuing productivity of the theory” (Maxwell McCombs).
Climate change has become of the world’s major issue today. The earth’s climate is always changing in a very fast and also in different ways. Climate changes affect our lives psychologically, emotional and also physically. Climate change is defined as a long term change in the earth’s climate, especially a change due to the increase in the average atmospheric temperatures. Due to this change in temperature, a lot of changes has occurred in our environment, these changes include rising sea levels, flooding, melting of polar ice caps, hotter days, colder nights and heat waves. These climate changes plays an important role in shaping our natural ecosystem, our human economics and also the most important, it affects the human race. For
Keith Douglas Warner with David Decosse authors of Thinking Ethically about the Environment explains that, “Environmental ethics apply ethical thinking to the natural world and the relationship between humans and the earth” (Douglas and Decosse 1). Understanding our environment will probably be the most important part of environmental ethics. By understanding the environment, one is putting one selves in the shoes of something that is relevant to nature. Understanding the struggles and helplessness that nature has will hopefully influence one to take better care of our planet. Feeling sympathy is something everyone needs to express towards planet Earth. Humans are the largest factor on deciding if the planet worsen or prosper. Our planet has nothing to do with how polluted it is, this is truly our
Over the past few years, climate change, plastic pollution, acid rain, and the interlinked nature of these challenges have brought much concern of many researchers and environmentalists. In a post-modern society, we have created a lot of environmental issues with global impacts because our environment has begun to be treated as an unlimited field full of abundant resources for groups and organizations with the power and skills to acquire them. Though many news and social media often underline the consequences of disturbing ecosystem and the significances of respecting the environment, but as more people cluster together in large metropolitan areas today, there are fewer opportunities for them to explore the city environment. Consequently, people do not have enough environmental awareness, and this could make the environmental challenges become even harder to cope with in the future. Hence, it is extremely vital to have environment education since it can help people to
The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
The environment today is not in a good condition, Climate change is evident, and oceans are getting polluted. Rainforrest's are decreasing in size due to deforestation and illegal logging. Animals are getting extinct due to the destruction of their habitats. Natural resources are being consumed at very large amounts, and get wasted. There are different ways these problems can be addressed, one option is environmental management. Environmental management focuses on conservation of natural resources, protection of habitats, and impact of humans on the environment. Conservation of natural resources is the smart use of the world's resources by humans, through this waste production is limited, and there will be less garbage in the world. By conserving
According to the internet human behavior has a very big affect on the environment. Environmental settings such as air pollution, oceans, energy, or noise are all sources that can negatively impact the environmental quality and conditions. Our daily routines have a huge impact on the environment and we do not realize it. New laws that are passing and educating people will help a lot. People are being educated on how to use less water, use our cars less, how to use less energy, and even taking reusable bags when going grocery shopping because plastic bags are very bad for the environment. There are simple solutions that can help in getting started with these efforts. Every little step and effort we make in our daily routines count.
For this environmental education to be effective, it must follow the ideas of ecological literacy in that all natural systems, and therefore all aspects of life, are interdependent. Comprehending ecological literacy will result in a society that wants to and sees the necessity of living a sustainable lifestyle. Environmental education is a positive feedback loop that, if more widely and intensely implemented, will benefit not only humans but the entire
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
