In Media & Environment: Conflict, Politics, and the News, Libby Lester presents a comprehensive argument that examines how media generates awareness, impacts opinion, and stimulates debate. She writes that the state of the natural environment is a serious problem and by studying the politics and conflicts in the media, we can begin to find solutions to environmental decline. Questions regarding news media’s ability to produce these solutions are asked with a strong sense of urgency– and rightly so. Calling climate change a “crises of global proportions” (p.44), Lester’s claims remain consistent with my beliefs and despite our shared opinions; I did not take delight in reading this book. There were many limitations and I found it to be theoretically rich in the analysis of media practices to the point where I had to translate each sentence into plain English. By no means am I undermining the points that Lester made, but I found it tiring to make sense of all the verbiage in-between. First, let me present an eye opening definition of news from Lester, stating, “[news] is defined firstly by those who have privileged access to the media […] it is then aimed at attracting and entertaining an audience for advertisers, and fitted into a general framework that suits corporate owners” (p.60). It is frightening to think that most of the media we consume depends on a system that is regulated by producers of news affiliated with society’s elite. In furtherance of this idea, I would like to look towards Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky’s Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (1988 p.1) that
In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. Today’s mainstream media has a deep influence on numerous aspects of economical and social life, it provides information and data almost on everything that happens on our planet. Mainstream media became one of the most important and influential instruments in our society, as the news stories reach a large numbers of people in a short time. Different people are using mainstream media as a first source of information; humans need the information, which is why there is a great deal of trust on media. We follow the news because it is our duty as citizens to be informed; it gives us the facts that help us make the right decisions and also gives us something to talk about. The media has a great public responsibility in front of their audience; therefore, they are expected to provide information that is accurate, reliable and free from bias. News is all around us and is readily available to everyone. There are many flaws in the system that hurts the authenticity of the news when you see it. The media is indirectly part of the political system. Most news is either considered liberal or conservative by many.
In conclusion, these two articles framed the Tennessee Coal Ash Spill in two distinct ways, one pro-environmentalism and other is drive for profit for corporation. Framing is a way for the news to speak in more than one voice (Schudson, 2003, pg 37). These articles show how you can see one event in contrasting perspective. The pictures helped understand what the article was trying to address. The picture itself can tell you where the articles stands. The mass media plays an enormous role in influencing the public. In the age of globalization many technologies like Internet, television, newspapers, magazines, radio and so on, make news available and accessible for everyone around the world. The media can easily get any information out there to the public regarding any subject such as political views, health issues, entertainment, education, human tragedies…and those information do have an impact on our everyday life decisions, opinions and raise our awareness on a subject. Climate change has become an important issue today and people need to understand how serious it is in order to take actions to prevent it from getting worse; and the only way the information can get to the public is via the mass media. Today global warming is raising many concerns and the media coverage is increasing but yet many scientists complain about the limited coverage of the subject because it seems that it is not enough compared to the gravity of the situation. Unquestionably the media being newspapers, internet, radio and television, influence society. They can affect, have affected and will continue to affect the progression of life in this nation and around the world, as electronic technology continues to be the chosen mode of communication for a whole generation, offering direct, often anonymous influential information.
This essay will show, unfortunately, that our democracy is not as healthy as it potentially could be because of television and print’s inadequate coverage of politics and the public’s resultant frustration and lack of knowledge. The reason this occurs is not because the media is trying to restrict our role in the government, but because it has other agendas to consider, such as producing maximum profits. Also, the media can take its obligatory role, often referred to as the “fourth estate,” to an extreme. John McManus, a former newspaper reporter and current professor at Santa Clara University researching the social responsibility of news media, specifically uses this term in his book Market-Driven Journalism: Let the Citizen Beware? to explain the media’s ideal role as the fourth branch of the government. The media is meant to participate in our system of checks and balances and check the government to ensure that it does not withhold too much power from the people. However, this can pose a problem if the media tries too hard to keep a check on the government and ends up transcending its role as the fourth estate and becoming cynical of the government. These market-driven characteristics and overzealous tendencies are conveyed in the media’s choice and presentation of language.

It is vital that environmental communication specialists work with journalists and reporters to frame environmental events in ways that are not biased; encouraging people to think on many levels. As this study conveys, those who not only watch one-sourced news, but also discuss political matters on their own terms with others are more sophisticated, and less likely to be persuaded by the media. Researchers in the field need to continue to conjure ways to keep the public focused on detrimental issues, while keeping them updated on several different mediated outlets, not just their news
The purpose of journalism is to report a story accurately; simply to tell it like it is. Over the past two decades, with increased tension over political and religious ideologies, the media’s original purpose is being lost. Yes, being well-informed remains an asset in the world today. Our now, globally-focused world will always value knowledge and awareness. With the television, internet, newspaper- all mediums of entertainment- available at the snap of a finger, we have non-stop access to news. One problem with this is the blatant bias of news networks. Every news source has a bias. Viewers typically recognize the platform of the major sources, therefore deterring them from certain networks. When reporters feed viewers the same opinion through different stories, the viewer isn’t getting a balanced intake in terms of overall understanding. In today’s society, viewers are truly at the mercy of what those in authority provide.
