The lights dim, the audience settles into their seats, and you prepare for your performance of your newest composition. There isn’t much in this world that can top the thrill of realizing your original compositions in a performance venue. But, to get there, you need to prepare to ensure that your music doesn’t play to an empty concert hall. Composers that put on their own recitals can increase exposure for their music, but they must also learn to wear several hats during the process. Invitations must be sent, posters must be hung, and refreshments must be provided. If you can survive the ordeal of putting on your own concert, a captive, intent, and engaged audience can listen to and become familiar with your music compositions.
Choosing a Theme
If you select compositions that are related thematically, but that are different enough to keep the audience entertained, you can market your concert more easily. Select or compose music that invokes several contrasting moods. If you normally write morose music, include a few pieces that are more upbeat and carefully arrange the program so that the audience gets a feel for the range of your compositional style. This concert is held by the Stony Brook University music department and is to perform seven pieces of music written by seven student composers. The concert is performed in Recital Hall of Staller Center in Stony Brook University. Since it is a small hall, audiences are very close to the performers. In fact, it is the first time I am this close to the performers and the sound for me is so clear and powerful that seems like floating in front of my eyes. Among the seven pieces, “Ephemeral Reveries” and “Gekko no mori” are piano solo, “Two Songs for Joey” is in piano and marimba, “Suite” and “Fold Duet No. 1” are in woodwinds, “Elsewhere” is played by string groups, and “e, ee, ree, and I was free” is in vocal. Personally, I like the sound of piano and guitar the best. Therefore, in the latter part I will analysis two pieces in piano, “Gekko no mori” and “Two Songs for Joey”.
The approximate size of the performance space in relation to our classroom was about double the size with about 322 seats. The performer was in the center of the stage with a fortepiano. On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, I attended a musical concert. This was the first time I had ever been to a concert and did not play. The concert was not what I expected. I assumed I was going to a symphony that featured a soloist clarinet; however, upon arrival I quickly realized that my previous assumptions were false. My experience was sort of a rollercoaster. One minute I was down and almost asleep; next I was laughing; then I was up and intrigued.

The Laidlaw Preforming Arts Center held a Wind Ensemble for the students of South Alabama. In this program there were a various Romantic style pieces which are listed on the program stapled to the back of this paper. Each piece of music shows a series of different styles, and the student band does so well with each. As the concert is coming to the end student conductors begin to conduct the pieces, and they all do a wonderful job.
Presenting a recital for the public is a daunting task. It exacts from the performer a number of skills which must come together at the exact hour of the performance. I like to think of the solo recital as the musical equivalent to the athletic triathlon. In the case of the recital, the three areas that must come into complete alignment by the recital date are musical expression, mental focus, and physical preparedness.

Illegal downloading of music has become prevalent in today’s society, and many artists—major or independent—receive little to no profit from album sales. A very interpretive art, music isn’t very clearly constricted or defined by one definition. With so many varieties of music, it’s difficult to say what aspect is really the most important. Some people think music’s history and the appreciation of music are the most important aspects to take into consideration. Some think complex in rhythms and melodies make the best music. Some people devote their whole lives to studying one genre of music in order to fully understand how that genre works. While all of these aspects of music are important, none of them can truly be compared with each other on a fair playing field. Music of different genres, eras, and geographic backgrounds were written for different purposes, different people, and different settings. Still, there is still one overarching theme that applies to all forms of music new or old: the way the composer presents his or her creation. The performance and presentation of a work of music is like the icing on the top of a cake. The cake may be the best you’ve ever tasted, but if the icing on the outside doesn’t look appealing or doesn’t taste good, chances are you’ll take a different piece of cake with better looking frosting next time. Then audience members who were perfect strangers who were screaming loudest would turn to each other with knowing glances and smile because they were sharing the same excitement and connecting with one another over their love of this man’s music. There was no pushing or shoving to get closer to the stage – it wasn’t that kind of crowd. Instead, there was mutual respect for one another’s space within the confines of the too-small venue. Nobody wanted to be the person who ruined it for someone else. It was this respect that made the audience members’ connections with one another that much stronger – we were all here to listen to this wonderful man’s music and see his performance – and, of course, we were here to enjoy it.
