Import Substitution
Describe import substitution (Inward looking) developmental strategy, clearly outlining the differences between the first and second stage. Assess its effectiveness in promoting economic development. Compare inward looking and outward looking strategies and discuss the assertion that the latter is superior.
The First Stage of Import Substitution:
All present day industrial and developing countries protect their manufacturing industries for the domestic markets. While the industrial countries of today rely primarily upon the usage of relatively low tariffs, developing countries apply high tariffs or quantitative restrictions which either limit or completely exclude competition from their imports. Protection like that - high protection - discriminates against exports through the explicit/implicit taxation of the export activities.
Explicit taxation can take the form of export taxes whereas implicit taxation occurs as a result of the effects of protection on the exchange rate.
As your protection level increases, your exchange rate level will decrease in order to ensure the necessary equilibrium of the balance of payments and the lower the amount of domestic currency exporters receive per unit of foreign exchange earned.
There is no need for high protection at the first stage of import substitution in the replacement of the imports of non-durable consumer goods
(clothing, shoes, household goods, textile fabrics, leather, wood and other types of inputs) since these commodities exist in the developing countries that are at the initial frontier of industrialization.
The commodities I mentioned are intensive in unskilled labor, the scale of output is relatively low, and costs do not rise substantially at lower output levels. The production of the commodities do not involve the use of sophisticated technology or highly educated workers and suppliers for parts, components, materials and accessories are not necessary for highly efficient operations. An argument for infant industry protection and promotion is made for the
"easy" stage, that being the first stage of import substitution because even though the domestic production of the commodities generates external economies in the form of labor training, entrepreneurial development and the spread of technology, there is a viable argument for infant industry protection because without the shielding from larger, more sophisticated companies, these infant industries will be crushed and overwhelmed by exceeding costs, non- competitiveness due to the lack of highly skilled laborers and the simple fact that these infant industries are technologically incompetent.
The Second Stage of Import Substitution:
I see the first stage of import substitution as a temporary requirement because the domestic production rises since it not only provides for increases in consumption but it also replaces imports. The rate of this growth however will decline as soon as the process of import substitution is completed.
If state colleges change the tuition to free tuition not only will doors open for these students, underprivileged will accomplish their dreams by getting education. Helena G. replies to the question of free public colleges “Next, I believe free college tuition should be given because there are students from underprivileged families that work hard in school and deserve the opportunity for a college education. Some students who get exceptional grades in school don’t have enough money to continue their education” (Teen Ink 1). These students are already struggling financially at home. Allowing free college would cause less stress for parents to deal with. “They spend so much time and effort on school work that they earned the right to acquire free college tuition. Lack of money should not stop a student from completing their education, but mostly their dream to become whatever they want to be” (Helena G 1). Many of students who live poor lives do an excellent job in school, but do not have enough financial support to enter in college. No outstanding student should remain home with a chance of getting a college
Kinship foster care placements are important to the resiliency of a child in foster care. Placement with a family member or family friend should be considered first when placing a child into foster care. Kinship foster homes offer the child familiarity regarding family practices and traditions. The foster child is also able to stay connected to other family members and the community. Kinship placements also encourage more frequent interactions between the foster child and the biological parents. More frequent contact with biological parents can encourage positive behavior in the foster
On the 7th March 2016 Delphi Printer and Periphals Company released the launch of its latest and innovative printer. In this analysis I will break down the approaches taken as Senior Project Manager and discuss my decisions and management style, comparing this to other project management methodolgys. I will then go on to discuss the project’s successes amd contraints including the theory of contraints in relation to this project. The reasons why this project was both a success and failure in terms of project management will be critically discussed not only on an indivisual scale in terms of company success but also in comparision to the larger context of mangement practises. The use of one consistent case study comparision is important to compare my project management too. I will be in this analysis using the rebuild of the one world trade centre project in New York
Internationalization significantly represents value creation and growth for firms of all shapes and sizes (Root, 1994). This is mainly because it creates new opportunities for the majority of firms. Internationalization is a very broad term; however, it can be defined as “Expanding a firm’s business from its original location to one or more additional foreign markets to enter” according to Barringer and Greening (1998). Recently, internationalization has increasingly become a crucial issue even for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) due to the international growth (Hollensen et al., 2014). The internationalization of SMEs has increasingly been facilitated by the reduction in trade barriers, transport costs as well
This paper will look at the effects of foster care placement on children. The literature review will discuss how foster placement affect children educationally, mentally, behavioral, and developmental. Children are placed in foster care due to unwholesome living situations, mistreatment, and negligence. According to the 2010 census 74.2 million children are living in foster care in the United States, and 101,840 children up for adoption (foster club website). Foster care children and systems are lacking many things such as adequate elementary and secondary education. These children also, lack a stabled living environment. Not only are they lacking things, but they have issues with behavioral health and general well-being. Students either will
The number of children who enter foster care is rapidly growing; however, there are not enough foster parents for these children. Children are placed into foster care because of neglect, abuse and many other reasons. Foster parents are single individuals or married couples who become licensed to serve as caretakers for foster children. Foster parents are very important because they help the child grow and by providing love and affection, and even stability while they are away from birth parents. The purpose of this review is to increase the awareness about foster parenting and finding ways to recruit parents to create successful foster placements.
Yet, the majority of people who oppose legal abortion are ones who hold strong moral values or believe it is immoral for other reasons. Often, abortions are seen as sacrilegious when regarding religions or philosophies. How ever author Scott Klusendorf writes about abortion being more related to incorrect morals. He states that fetuses and toddlers are virtually the same, that one is just more developed than the other. This brings him to the point that if it is immoral to murder a toddler then why is it any less immoral to kill a fetus when they are virtually the same? (Klusendorf). Many people hold the same or similar mindset when it comes to the ethics of abortions. Although religion and morals cause people to oppose abortion, another reason why people oppose abortion is because of the death and mental effects it brings to a woman. “Abortion...is often an emotional experience for the woman...Guilt, sadness, and anger are common feelings that may persist for some time or reemerge years later” (“Abortion”). These risks that can happen often are very strong components to why people do not support abortion. People feel that a woman should not have to put herself
Transposition involves “replacing one word class with another without changing the meaning of the message” (Vinay and Darbelnet, 1958/1995: 88). For instance, the ST noun is translated into an adjective or a verb in the TL but it conveys thae same meaning of the ST. Newmark (1988: 85) defines transposition as “a translation procedure involving a change in the grammar from SL to TL.” Newmark gives four types of transposition. The first type is concerned with the form and position of the word. An example is given by Zakhir (2008: 3): “a red car”, "سيارة حمراء"; “a beautiful girl”, "فتاة جميلة". It can be noted from the latter example that the position of the adjective has been changed in the translation and this change depends on the grammatical rules of TL.
Over 670,000 children in America, as of 2015, have spent time in foster care due to child abuse and neglect (Children’s Bureau). The foster system has been a way for children to supposedly seek shelter in a time of need but instead has caused pain and trouble among the youth. The problems of the foster system must be fixed. Without the youth, there would be no society. The disorganization of the foster system has negatively affected lives of children and must be solved by making people more aware of how it works.
The second phase following the previous stage is a precondition for take-off. Economic growth is starting to take place and it is essential to justify the means within a good definition. The society begins to implement the manufacturing of products while at the same time foreign intervention by advanced societies such as through colonialism is needed to bring about change in one's society .... ... middle of paper ...
For one to understand the costs and benefits of globalization and localization one first needs to understand what each entails. Globalization is when a country involves itself into international affairs, economically, politically or even possibly culturally. Globalization expands beyond the local boundaries of a nation and spreads into other communities throughout the world. Localization is when a country chooses not to participate in global affairs and confines itself and its people from taking part in any type of involvement with any other country. This means that this country does not participate in any economic, political or culture issues with outsiders.
Foster care provides families for children that need to be placed outside their home and away from their biological family. The role of a foster family is crucial in helping a child placed in foster care to feel safe. The fostering family should be supportive of the biological parents and refrain from any negative statements about the parents. When the time is right the family should encourage the child to visit and communicate with the biological parents. This will help to promote and encourage communication between the child and both
Another breach that took pace was the Veteran’s Administration incident which 26.5 million discharged veterans’ records, including their name, SSN and state of birth were stolen from the home of an employee who accidently too the materials home.
The lack of tuition-free collegiate education imposes several economic and personal burdens on citizens nationwide. In accordance, every student must be given equitable opportunities and access to survive in the surrounding economic conditions. The absence of funding toward tuition-free college restricts such necessary education to the minority who can afford it, burdening those who do attend with years and dollars of student debt loans. A college education is a well-recognized desideratum, proven to provide graduates with many job opportunities and higher paying salaries. This aids with furthering a nation’s competitive, global, and economic stance. In response, the United States government must institute a system of tuition-free college,
Colonialism is defined as the exploitation of a weaker country by a stronger country with the goal of strengthening and enriching the resources of the dominant country. European colonialism of its last five centuries shared similarities with other previous colonialisms such as the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and the Romans, but differed greatly from them (Macqueen 2007). Mainly, because European colonialism was not focused and centered in a single region but shared and spread its religion, culture, economic, technology and political systems throughout the world during the colonial period all at the same time being highly competitive and ambitious throughout (Gillen & Ghosh 2007). European colonialism had left some positive and negative legacies and the effects of both can be felt today in the modern world, even long after its fall in the 1950s. European colonialism is often perceived as an earlier form of globalisation because it was an early expression of the tendencies toward exploration, trade, and control that continues to emerge as the driving forces of globalisation today (Gopinath 2008).
