This paper focuses on providing a summary of the efforts of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research which influenced the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” The importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” report related to the nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development will be stated. The role of state-based action coalitions and how they advance goals of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action will be described. A summary on will be provided of two (2) initiatives that are spearheaded by Florida state’s Action Coalition with an explanation of ways in which the initiatives advance the nursing profession. Existing barriers to advancement currently in Florida and ways in which nursing advocates may overcome these barriers will be discussed. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been in operation for more than 40 years and has been instrumental in working to improve the status of health and the health care for all individuals within the United States of America. They hold a vision “as a nation, to strive together to create a culture of health enabling all in our diverse society to lead healthy lives, now and for generations to come” ("Robert Wood Johnson Foundation," 2014). The Foundations nursing programs has early initiatives that would improve the profession with the advancement of nurse practitioners, programs improving nursing academics, improved hospital nursing. There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. A registered nurse is a vital healthcare professional that has earned a two or four year degree and has the upper-most responsibility in providing direct patient care and staff management in a hospital or other treatment facilities (Registered Nurse (RN) Degree and Career Overview., 2009). This shortage issue is imperative because RN's affect everyone sometime in their lifetime. Nurses serve groups, families and individuals to foster health and prevent disease.

Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’.
Nurses are uniquely qualified to fill a demand for change through leadership. Unlike business minded individuals whose primary outcome concern is monetary, a nurses’ primary concern is organic: a living, breathing, tangible being. In a leadership role, a nurse might consider an organization as if it were a grouping of patients, or perhaps an individual patient, each limb with its own characteristics and distinct concerns. They can effectively categorize and prioritize important personal and professional matters and are therefore ideally positioned to lead change efforts. Perhaps most importantly, effective nurse leaders can provide clarity to the common goal and empower others to see their self-interests served by a better common good (Yancer, 2012).
The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) Strategic Plan approached the clinical intervention studies, implementation research approaches, comparative effectiveness research and analysis of the cost, outcome and quality of care. Furthermore, NINR is committed in advancing the health of populations, irrespective of race, ethnicity, age, gender, socioeconomic status, and or sexual orientation to develop culturally responsive, evidence-based interventions.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Institute of Medicine (IOM) form a partnership in 2008 to launch a 2-year Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiative in reaction to the nursing profession transformation need in order to meet the requirement of the changing needs health care delivery (IOM, 2010). In their partnership, the two organization agreed that in order to achieve health care that is effective and accessible, nurses need to be exceptional in providing health care, and have a leadership skills. A committee was elected by IOM on the RWJF initiative to come up with a report that will make recommendations for a proposal which will move nurses and nursing future into action (IOM, 2010).
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is a foundation that strive to help improve people’s overall health, as well as their healthcare. They support research that focuses on what impacts people’s health, how to better understand health, and how to improve it. The foundation has four major areas in which they work, Health Leadership, Health Systems, Healthy Communities, and Healthy Kids, Healthy Weight. Each area is broken up into subgroups all of which are aimed at improving the wellbeing of Americans.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is the America’s largest philanthropy and its mission is purely health (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. [RWJF], 2015). In 2008, both issued a report as “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” and according to the report, nurses have the heavy responsibility to accommodate the increased demand of the nation’s health care system. In the transformed health care system, nurses has to focus on chronic conditions, primary care, and prevention and wellness care. Also in order to provide efficient and effective care, nurses has to work in team work with other health care professional and presume the role of leadership. To fulfill these roles and qualities, nurses has to be highly educated. Nurses play an essential role in a holistic approach towards health care delivery, spent most of the time with the patient and their families in educating, advocating, solving the problem and leading them towards the right direction. The Institute of Medicine report on future Nursing describes Nurses as “ the multidimensional efforts for changing health outcomes.”( Scultz, 2010). To bring change in any system needs deliberate efforts, dedication, motivation and passionate leadership towards the desired goal. In 2008, a report titled, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the committee addressed the need for higher levels education for nurses to change and advance the system.
“A number of barriers prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to rapidly changing health care settings and an evolving health care system” (Institute of Medicine [IOM], Report Brief, 2010, p. 1). In order to understand the capabilities and limitations of today’s nursing profession, the Institute of Medicine appointed ‘The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)’ to conduct a 2-year study to compel recommendations for nursing practices. “The future of Nursing: Leading Change Advancing Health” published in October 2010, included eight recommendations for advancing the nursing profession (IOM, Report Recommendations, 2010, p. 1). While each organization contributes to nursing research and education in meeting the goals of nurse excellence, the NLN purpose is to promote nursing education and to build nurses who are energetic and diverse so that they can advance the healthcare both nationally and globally. (National League of Nursing [NLN], n.d). The impact the NLN has on nursing practices, education and research are phenomenal. The NLN help promote evidence-based nursing through fostering research and by encouraging nurses to participate in hospitals committees that help in promoting changes in nursing protocol/practices. Along with setting priorities for nursing education and supports nursing research, the NLN assist nurses in enhancing health promotion and disease prevention and help in developing the next generation of nurse researchers. Thus, nurses who also join the NLN can get updates on the newest research on nursing practices, help in professional development, information on policy and help with networking for jobs and research.
