THE PROFESSION’S IMAGE PROBLEM The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 16% increase in the number of accounting jobs from 2010 to 2020 while the AICPA has similarly suggested that demand for new accounting graduates will be higher for 63% of CPA firms in the nation. With a bright outlook such as this, the accounting profession should appear more attractive to younger generations who are seeking a promising career path. Despite this, the challenge to promote diversity in the profession remains. Richard Caturano, former Chairman of the AICPA, highlighted this difficulty when he said: “It’s not like nobody has worked on this or people haven’t done a good job. I know people have spent a lot of time on it. We just haven’t had good results, so something has to change.” (Tysiac) The greatest barrier to attracting, retaining, and promoting diversity is the profession’s image problem. Awareness of the Profession Misconceptions about accounting as a career are counteracting diversity efforts by the profession. Lack of diversity at the top in management poses a disproportionate challenge, contributing to diminishing retention numbers. In 2012, professional staff at CPA firms were composed of 75% Caucasian, 4% African American, 5% Hispanic and Latino, and 15% Pan-Asian. The number of ethnic partners in CPA firms displayed similar trends of Caucasian dominance: 90% Caucasian, 2% African American, 2% Hispanic and Latino, and 5% Pan-Asians. Women have also faced difficulties with advancement in the profession. In 2012, women comprised 44% of professional staff and only 19% of partners.
Diversity in the work place has generally been thought of as purely an employment equity issue. However, diversity is coming to be recognized as an asset which can, like any other asset that is well managed, contribute to the bottom line. Diversity is growing almost as quickly as the number of software vendors at an accounting convention (Talbot-Allen, 1995, p. 3)
The approaches used in diversity training owe much on the history of this practice. Diversity training came to be as a result of a universal call to affirmed action that revolutionized the demographic composition in organizations (Paluck 580). Originally, companies instituted diversity measures to counter legal implication threats. The practice evolved from being a single day event to a continuum occurrence that characterized hiring, retention and rewarding of employees. This was actually the birth of the diversity management practice, which modern organizations are trying to catch up with. It is important to discuss the approaches here because they help critically analyze on whether diversity training help in bettering performance in an organization or not.
Workforce diversity has become a reality in organizations. More organizations have written workforce diversity policies or programs. Although there is still no consensus on how to define workforce diversity, diversity policies and program are producing positive effects in organizations. Diversity in the workplace is a way of defining acceptable behaviors of employees. Diversity represents all the ways in which individuals are both similar and different. It involves a variation of characteristics such as: age, sex, color, religion, national origin, disability, or any other differences. Although diversity initiatives are common in the workplace today, this is due mainly to the federal government use of constitutional amendments, legislation, and executive orders, along with court decisions to interpret the laws for equal rights (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2010). The way an organization defines diversity and how it manages its diverse workforce may determine its effectiveness.

There are many types of diversity; ethnicity, gender, religion and age just to name a few.
