Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University mainly because of its excellent accounting faculty, appropriate curriculum, and experiential learning.
First and foremost, the world-class accounting scholars, including distinguished accounting historian Stephen A. Zeff- a member of The Accounting Hall of Fame, attract me. Besides their outstanding academic achievement, the rigor and zeal to students also left me a deep impression, when professor Benjamin Lansford helped me to evaluate my prerequisites over email.
Moreover, the interdisciplinary curriculums designed for students with non-accounting background suit me fine. As a Chinese student majored in electronic commerce and minored in accounting, I hope to take advantage of my disciplinary perspective, dual language ability, and global vision, to understand how business and accounting interacts.
Last but not least, I’m looking forward to the experiential learning in Washington, DC and Norwalk, CT, and the connection with global professional services firms and alumni network, which will be powerful and invaluable help for my future

It was my pleasure to be given the opportunity to attend the International Conference of Critical Accounting at Hunter College. At the conference, there were many professional international accountants, brilliant college and university professors, and many others who are expertise in the accounting field. All of these accountant professionals shared their experiences in the field, and their researches and findings. However, there was a unique session of this conference, a brief memorial of Abraham J. Briloff. He was an intelligent accountant and was a mentor for many in his field. Therefore, I would like to dedicate this assignment in memory of Briloff and his influences in the accounting field.
Through my coursework at Cornell, I have developed a thorough understanding of how businesses operate and have strengthened my analytical and quantitative skills. In Financial Accounting, I have studied how to understand and analyze financial statements such as Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Retained Earnings, and Statement of Cash Flow. Besides theoretical knowledge of basic accounting, I have strengthened and practiced my understanding of the entire accounting cycle through a Capsim Simulation project. For this project, the class was divided into groups, and each group owned a fictional company of a similar product. We had to compete with each other for market share and profit. This project allowed me to learn about profit-maximizing strategies and how to create and interpret financial statements for better business decisions. If I get selected for the internship at Teacher Created Materials, I will have an opportunity to practice my skills and knowledge about accounting and financial analysis through projects related to Account Payable and Account Receivable transactions (for instance, receiving and sending invoices and checks to vendors) or General Ledger operations (for instance, analyzing the effect of debit and credit transactions on the company’s assets and

The stereotypical image correlated to the account mirrors that of a public accountant. An individual working as a public accountant can expect to work as an independent third party to a multitude of companies. As this third party it is their duty to oversee financial transactions to ensure that the statements of not only the company, but also its’ supporting companies, correctly correspond and match up to the position, results and cash-flow of the clientele. This general quota outlining a public accountants job description is not the same for a private accountant. The main difference between a public and private accountant is that unlike the public and its handle on a multitude of accounts, a private accountant specializes with a certain company or field. With this specialization, a private accountant tackles setting up a system that records the transactions within the business. The recordation of the transactions is then generated into statem...

Every day, many people question my passion for pursuing accounting as a profession and the first answer I think of is that I am good with numbers. However, advancing in the field has made me realize that my passion is not only based on figures. Growing up as a kid, I was privileged to have a piggy account where I would save as little as fifty cents per week. Since my parents rewarded me in monetary value as a positive reinforcement in cases of good behaviour, I was motivated to maintain good manners so long as my savings increased. As time went by, I realized I had saved way “too much” money for a little child. The challenge came in the management of the funds because I was focused on spending more on pleasurable activities. However, the guidance of my parents enabled me to prioritize on the more important things and save more. I took interest in managing may own account as a child and even pursued accounting courses in high school. The interest grew deeper because I gained more insight on the facts about accounting and the career. Also, I believed that it is career that one would be self-employed thereby avoiding the dilemmas of lacking jobs after graduating. For instance, one would easily start their own business and manage their finances comfortably.
