Humans have all sorts of traits, good and bad. But sometimes these traits can doom the world. Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep is a story about a psychic man and girl fighting against a tribe of immortal beings, living off steam that telepathic children give off. By examining Stephen King’s novel Doctor Sleep, one can see that wrath, cowering, and selfishness are human traits which will condemn out society. These traits illustrate a destructive element in mankind in the society of the story.
One can see when examining wrath, that it is a trait that will cause humans to do great harm to the society. Wrath is seen as a deep and powerful anger that leads to vengeance, which Rose the Hat exhibits perfectly. One can see this trait when Dan instructs Abra to call and provoke Rose in order to distract her from their plan to destroy the True Knot. Rose does not respond well to Abra calling her and the True Knot coward’s, which she responds to with, “’You stupid little bitch, you don’t know anything!’ Rose leaped to her feet. Her thighs bumped the table and her coffee spilled”(King 447). Instead...
In the human nature, naive ignorance of the world's imperfections eventually yields to the recognition that the world does contain hatred and violence. John Knowles places his novel A Separate Peace in situations which necessitate this emotional transformation. The characters become increasingly aware of the nature of the world. In addition, symbols help show the interrelation of ideas and events as they appear in Gene's subconscious mind. In this novel, setting, character, and symbols develop the theme of loss of innocence.
Oscar Wilde, an acclaimed Irish Poet, novelist, dramatist and critic once aptly commented, “Men become old, but they never become good”. The philosophical aspect of this quote relies on the basis that human beings are inherently malevolent. Through his pessimistic perspective, Wilde clearly captures the ill-disposed mindset of mankind. Moreover, there are various deductive arguments that discredit the optimistic depiction of human nature. One of the prime examples can be found in Kurt Vonnegut’s literature. In Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat's Cradle, through the illustration of his characters, the author symbolizes the four elements of human fallibility.
Rose's breast cancer symbolizes the way she is literally consumed with anger (the cancer eats at her flesh, consuming her body). Anger is the only way she knows to deal with her father, her husband, men and the system they represent: "We're not going to be sad. We're going to be angry until we die. It's the only hope."(354) She doesn't see that anger is destructive, that anger is in fact why things have turned out the way they have.

It is important to include cultural issues in the helping process to be more effective. We also need cultural competence because the U.S. is becoming more diverse. Therefore with diversity comes different beliefs, norms, and values. Eurocentric values dominate sciences and began cultural universals which puts the clash of dominate and non-dominate cultural behaviors in motion. In 1996 the NASW Code of Ethics increased the recognition of cultural competence. It is important to know diversity exist within ethnic and cultural groups because social workers need to know that relationships between helping professionals and clients may be strained. This happens because of the distrust between groups. Another important aspect is that the professional realizes their own values, biases, and beliefs. The reason for this is because they must value diversity to start with and understand the dynamics of difference. Culturally competent practitioners have to go through developmental process of using their own culture as a starting point to meet all behaviors. Striving for cultural competence is a long term process of development. The literature on cultural competence is theoretical and conceptual. They have not been evaluated in a systematic way. Roughly there are 2 million Native americans in the U.S. Which survive decimating disease, over-repressed in child welfare system, suffer from health problems, and are among the poorest people in the United States. Working with them clearly falls within the social work clearly mandate to serve vulnerable and oppressed clients. However, we do not know how many people from this group is actually receiving help from social workers. Even though it is important to train social workers to provide care in th...
He convinces the audience that we all inherit these mad thoughts, whether it is talking to ourselves to murdering our enemies in reality through jokes and illusions. King attracts us by stating that “the potential lyncher is in almost all of us and every now and then.” He includes reasons why we continue to dare the nightmare and initiate our sense of being normal. His arguments portray normal people that think are not mentally ill, are. Demonstrating the choices, we make independently like buying that ticket and sitting down to watch the gore before our eyes, proves that our insanity gets the best of us and must feed our negative thoughts. Proving people’s odd decisions, he states, “When we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth-row center in a theatre showing a horror movie, we are daring the nightmare.” When explaining our mental health, he informs how we release our madness through bloody horror films.
The human condition, a concept prevalent in several pieces of literature, encompasses the emotional, moral, questioning, and observant nature of humans. This concept is often used by authors to emphasize the characteristics that set humans apart from other living creature. Edgar Allan Poe’s dark fantasy piece “The Fall of the House of Usher” perfectly depicts the human condition as it conveys how fear and over-thinking can control one’s actions and life.

As I was reading the three theories I found out the following most compelling main of points of their theories. Jean Piaget developed the Theory of Cognitive Development with has four stages, sensimotor stage in the infant years, pre-operational stage that manifests during the toddler and early childhood years, concrete stage during the elementary and part of the adolescents years and the formal operational state during adolescence into adulthood (Huitt & Hummel, 2003). Lev Semenovich Vygostky developed the Theory of Social Development. The zones of proximal development are between the ability of the child’s ability to solve problems on his/her own and the capacity to solve them with assistant (Shultz, 2014). Erik Erickson states that we develop through predetermined unfolding of personalities in eight stages (Boeree, 2006).
Violence and crime happens all around us, everyday, for many different reasons. Sometimes violence occurs spontaneously in the heat of the moment, other times it is well planned and thought out, and occasionally violence is used to make a statement. In the novels The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, and The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, violence is represented in different ways, but they share a common aspect. In both novels, violence is portrayed as a way to get control and power over a situation.

I plan to pursue a degree in Computer Engineering with an emphasis in technology engineering. I have been interested in this field from the time I work fixing my brothers bikes and mine and, most recently days helping my father after school. Just working with my hands is something that gets my attention and enjoy many new things. This is why I believe that computer engineering is the right career for my future. Ever since I was in seventh grade electronics has been one of my favorite subjects. I knew I wanted to be an engineer when I completed my science fair project I have always worked on electrical currents, the flow of current from its positive charge to its negative charge. What helped me understand this concept was when we had the electricity unit my fr...
Pat Barker’s Union Street is one of the first feminine books. The term feminism is considered to be a representation of the images of women declared by literature. The scope of this movement was to examine the authorship as well as the consistency of women. (Barry116) It was particularly written in an era when people had to face Margaret Thatcher’s England. She was the first and only female Prime Minister of Great Britain and she had also been constantly referred as the “iron lady”. Considering Margaret Thatcher’s gender, the reader ends up supporting that her sex had nothing to do with her politics. It was in other words, a secondary issue. (n.p) Margaret Thatcher’s authority as well as her power ended up being abused. “Mrs. Thatcher's unique mark was also felt in the two confrontations that ultimately undid her. The first was the poll tax, which was disastrous, unjust and was her policy alone.” (n.p) In order to be more specific based on her ideologies and strategies, British people had to leave under cruel conditions. The power and the influence of the made unions was reduced as well as a huge amount of jobs have been lost. Additionally, Pat Barker’s novel is considered to be a reflection towards the conflicts of maintaining a community and its identity in a working class culture. The reader seems to be aware of how the loss of thousand jobs can be regarded as a serious, negative affection towards the relationship between the two genders. Pat Barker’s “Union Street” also addresses the issue based on gender relations and how the loss of economic secure can destroy the unity of a family as well as the relation between the two distinctive sexes. The term Union can be regarded as a nostalgic imagination of working class life as wel...
