“America is a vast conspiracy to make you happy.” If we are American then we are in our own promise land. Americans have their own way of showing their love towards America. An American is someone who feels included in America, someone who welcomes others, and someone who is loyal to their country. First, an American is someone who feels included in America. This relates to my definition of an American because I feel if we are in America then we are included in a lot unless we separate our self from other people. If we are Americans we do not remove people from places if they are not bothering anybody. “I, Too, Sing America”, a poem, Langston Hughes, defines the experience of an African American male being considered an American instead of being judged by his color.When Hughes is separated from others he says, “I laugh and eat well, and grow strong.” To me this means since we are colored we got treated differently from others, but we still are going to have our way in the end. This relates to my definition of an American because if we welcome others we gain respect. Since we are Americans we do not stop others from coming in if they want a better life. In the newspaper photo “Scene on a Steerage Deck”, by Frank Leslie, it shows immigrants arriving in New York City in “July 1887” and admiring the Statue of Liberty. In Leslie’s photo the caption says “Scene on the Steerage Deck.” To me this means that the immigrants had to pass here to reach their promise land that we call America. We as Americans love being in our country so we follow most of the rules and respect
