When you think of a robot invasion, you might picture the 2004 film “I, Robot”, where Will Smith is battling the highly intelligent robots planning on enslaving the human race in 2035. This will likely not be an issue seventeen years in our future, but anxiety is rising in the U.S. as technology advances and the common American can’t keep up with their automatron and A.I. colleagues. These machines are proving more efficient and cost friendly than their human counterparts, and some American citizens are in danger of being replaced by a machine at work. Sweden is less concerned with this matter in comparison to America, but they have some solutions that work for them. Goodman, a journalist with The New York Times and author of “The Robots are coming, and Sweden is fine” explains how the Swedish system works so well and how Swedish citizens can remain so calm when faced with unemployment. The citizens of Sweden get free Unemployment benefits, Education, and Health Care, much like America’s neighbor Canada. According to Carl Melin this is, “a good safety net-”and “-good for entrepreneurship”, which means all of the systems in place by the Government do not allow the citizens to suffer, especially from unemployment. Alex Williams, a father of two and a journalist with the New York Times voices his fear for his children’s future in the workforce in his article, “Will Robots Take Our Children’s Jobs?”. He explains that as technology advances, the more work is replaced by it, and soon robots will be performing human surgery or being the next top actor. William tells in the article that “-Artificial intelligence could make countless professions obsolete by the time my sons reach their 20’s.” Sweden would celebrate the foot soldier jobs being done by robots, as new job opportunities would open up to them through employer and Government support. MD Psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow also holds a strong opinion of the self checkout grocery store machines and amazon drone delivery service through his article “Should Trump Stop Robots from Stealing Jobs?”. Ablow is concerned with how president Trump is handling the fact that millions are out of work by the machines held to the highest regard and says that, “Humans don’t want to turn out to have been ‘too clever by half’, inventing things that ultimately dispirit and defeat us.”, and is passionate about the injustice that Americans are putting other Americans out of work. Derek Thompson with The Atlantic is more concerned with the future of A.I.’s and automatrons.
