In David Sedaris’s essay collection, Naked, “I like guys” had probably stand out as interesting, compelling, and meaningful essay he has done. Because of its title, “I like guys” had given away his story that relates to homosexual. It turns out that it is about David discovered that he is homosexual when he was a teenager during his summer camp in Greece. In addition, he did discuss about developing his crush on a fellow camper who is a boy. The interesting, compelling, and meaningful part is when the two of them spread false rumors on each other until his crush exposed David’s gayness, David felt betrayed by what he had done, even though all the campers did not care, and that caused them to ruin their friendship. Humorist David Sedaris’s “I like guys” contains the theme of betrayal throughout his storyline of summer camp in Greece. That theme was found by the way David had built up the tensions to make his story more interesting and attracts more to the readers. In the first paragraph, he started out with describing the punishment for anyone doing inappropriate, sexual-related activity. However, he doubted that he and his crush Jason will get caught. To avoid the campers’ suspicious, they both started many “rumors” about each other, like David “had stolen an athletic supporter from another camper and secretly wore it over [his] mouth like a surgical mask” (Sedaris 91), or Jason “had expressed a desire to become a dancer” (Sedaris 91). In this way, it shows that those two are just having fun with making up those “rumors,” so no one would suspect that they would get along together.
