As I progressed through my studies, I found myself drawn to the youth and desired to connect with my community. At the request of the museum director, Georgette Norman, I assisted with developing, organizing and presenting theme related tours to children who participated in the Children Remembering Important Beginnings (CRIB), an initiative to support the children whose parents were incarcerated. Other opportunities to connect with my community soon followed, I taught elementary children art as an assistant teacher for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art outreach program, Art in the Afternoon, where we incorporated music and culture to teach students how to use art to help them understand themselves and the importance of perseverance; and facilitated …show more content…

My participation in I Believe I Can Fly program was the beginning of the shift towards acknowledging my co-workers, my friends and my family were right, maybe I would “counsel the world” or at the very least become a counselor. I had the honor and privilege to meet a quiet and shy little girl who for some reason I felt drawn too. Eventually,I was able to establish trust with the little girl who later exposed her mother’s boyfriend as her molester. In that moment, I realize I had spent my college career learning about courageous men and women but now it was time for me to be courageous and follow my true path. Prior to the accident, I’d meet with the dean of studies and received approval to take on a full course load. However, my injuries were so significant I had to undergo physical therapy for more than two months and could no longer attend school. I was devastated. I wanted to give up. The kind and compassionate words of my physical therapist,Michael, convinced me that I had the strength to prevail against all odds. While focusing on my recovery, I failed to disenroll which resulted in my GPA plummeting to a less than a 2.0. I could not receive financial aid because my completion rate failed to meet federal and school requirements. Michael's kind words, “You may not get there as fast as everyone else but you will get there,” inspired me rededicate myself to my studies. Through hard work, overnights at library ( I was locked inside the library twice, I laugh about that now), and gallons of coffee; I self-paid for the last eight classes and received my Bachelor of Science in History. Yes, it took me longer to complete my degree but now I tell anyone who’s struggling,or has experienced a setback; “You may not get there as fast as everyone else but you will get there.” Through this experience I realized I possessed courage,self-discipline and the strength to overcome adversity head
