Excited by the idea of becoming a scientist since I was a small child, my interests in pursuing graduate studies intensified during my undergraduate education and my research experience. Rather than discouraging me with the tremendous amount of work and demands for creativity, my college years motivated me to earn a Ph.D. and to continue pursuing a career as a research scientist. Although my exact research goals have yet to be refined, my interests include studying the genetic basis of disease and the genetic mechanisms that govern various cellular processes, such as the cell cycle, apoptosis, and tumor formation.
Although I entered college without a clear research direction, the Biotechnology Program at Rochester Institute of Technology helped develop my interest in the field of Genetics. I found much of my laboratory training at RIT to be extremely rewarding. For example, one experience that early on convinced me to seriously consider genetics was a project involving the construction and characterization of a recombinant plasmid. Since I worked independently for the most part, the project played a key role in increasing my confidence and helping me to understand various concepts pertaining to genetic analysis. It was this experience that motivated me to seek a position as a teacher' s assistant for a course in Microbial and Viral Genetics. As a TA, I learned how demanding the teaching situation is and how much teaching a course can contribute to my own learning.
By this time, after discovering my passion for research and the joy of teaching, I began to seriously contemplate graduate schools. To excel in graduate school, I decided I would not limit my experience to my formal education at RIT. Instead, I wanted the opportunity to explore my career options to make a well-informed decision as to the area of my future research. With these goals in mind, I chose to take advantage of RIT' s Cooperative Education Program, which meant earning my Bachelor' s degree in five years instead of four. In December of 1997,Astra Arcus USA Pharmaceuticals hired me as a research assistant in the Electrophysiology department.
At Astra, I learned research techniques not taught by RIT. For the past year, I have been working with a subset of neuronal glutamate receptors via voltage clamping on Xenopus oocytes. The research of our lab is geared toward the study of central nervous system diseases.

A major hurdle in this academic career that I hope to have is going to be the lack of expertise in the designing, implementation and evaluation of clinical trials.
My first experience with genetics in a lab setting was in my AP Biology class, where we worked with recombinant plasmids. Because I so thoroughly enjoyed that learning experience, I went online to look at the various applications of genetics, discovering how a world of possibilities still lies in the near future in the field of genetics. DNA is the code for all life as we know it, and now that we have the capability to manipulate it, the applications for genetic biotechnology in tackling genetic diseases and mutations are unbounded. This prospect truly excites me because of its potential to help others. I aspire to be able to help others with the work and research I perform in the field of genetics in the future.

The main purpose of conducting the interviews with Dr. Rod P. Githens and Ed.D candidate, Joshua C. Collins, is to understand the reasons they chose this career path; meanwhile, it was a good chance to know more about their experiences and stories. I also realized that there are many important components for a scholar to attain a successful career including good preparation, clear communication, and thoughtful organization. There are many takeaways from these two interviews. The following statements will illustrate the most valuable inspiration I obtained from them.

The San Joaquin Kit fox has been listed has been listed as endangered since 1967 under the federal endangered list. San Joaquin Kit foxes are important in their ecosystem; they serve as a population control for smaller rodents the population has continued to decrease due to loss of habitat and degradation of the land caused by development. The efforts that have been made to protect this species are necessary for the species to avoid extinction. However, the efforts made to protect the species have yet to have positive results. Stricter regulations on development need to be implement, for example banning franking. If larger parcels of natural habitat are not obtain for the San Joaquin kit fox the population will not thrive and become extinct.

Over the years, I have developed an innovative approach to teaching and conducting research with undergraduates through creating and presenting course materials in both laboratory and classroom settings. In my experience, the best teaching involves concrete, hands-on examples, so I engage students in my courses by encouraging the maximum laboratory participation possible.
When it comes to working in a stressful environment while maintaining efficient, human, and profession-al conduct, I’m highly competent. In addition, my communication skills are sharp, as is my abil-ity to retain information and remember people. Thanks to my schooling and my keen interest in the industry, my research skills will keep my knowledge of the industry and practices up-to-date. In fact, taking in new material is a joy. The Clinical laboratory science field is vast and ever-changing, something I’m both excited and prepared to deal with. For this reason, I intend to re-main on top of advances in the field.
The enigma of life and the mystery of living organisms have always fascinated me. The persistent developments in the field of Biotechnology have opened up growth opportunities that are beneficial to the individual as well as the society. The perfect combination of theory and practical knowledge is required to succeed in this field. I want to be an element of innovation in this field, which is creating a better tomorrow for everyone. To do this, I need to prepare myself with mandatory knowledge that only a Masters' program can provide. Having been brought up in a strong and secure family, my parents have inculcated good values and principles in me. My parents’ support has always motivated me to reach my goals. Being from a family where both my parents' are highly educated and my father having done his Doctorate in Botany has always inspired me to pursue my ultimate goal of being a researcher, either in industry or in academia in this field. My future plans are to become a biomedical scientist. Biomedical scientists serve in all levels of health science research from basic science working with cell cultures to human clinical trials experimenting the most cutting-edge breakthroughs to maximize human quality of life. I am interesting in researching rare diseases. There are many rare diseases that affect small proportions of the population and unfortunately go unnoticed for reason. Unfortunately, usually it is because therapeutic agents for these diseases would have a much smaller market than therapeutics for common diseases. There is an immense need for research attention to ultimately improve clinical outcomes in patients of rare diseases because many are a lifelong chronic prognosis and are genetic and non-modifiable by lifestyle factors and are lacking of often absent of current treatment options. The government helps by socializing the solution by having money set aside by public National Institute of Health (NIH) to research ‘orphan diseases’. An example of one such program from the NIH is Orphan Products Natural History Grants Program.
